  Have you ever wondered how hamburgers got their name? They don't even contain any ham! ​The hamburger can be traced all the way back to the Tartars. The Tartars were an ancient nomadic tribe. They invaded Asia and Europe in the Middle Ages. These people often ate their beef shredded and raw. According to some historians, they would put would put their meat between their saddles and horses. As they rode, the meat became tenderized.

  The Tartars introduced their meat dishes to the people of Germany. In Germany, the shredded beef was mixed with spices and then cooked. This became known as the Hamburg Steak, named after the city Hamburg. Later, German immigrants brought the Hamburg Steak to America. It was renamed the hamburger by Americans.

  Hamburgers began appearing in restaurants in New York in the 1880s. Since then, hamburgers have become extremely famous worldwide. Hamburger restaurants have been opened in many countries. Fast food chains have made a lot of money selling the famous sandwich.
