Topic : 30-minute delivery system

Kim Nayeong

Lately, a delivery-related accident happened where a 24-year-old Pizza Hut employee crashed head-on against a taxi on his way to deliver a pizza riding a motorcycle. A witness reported to the police that the deliverer had driven through a red light before colliding with a taxi. Although he was rushed to a hospital, he was clinically declared dead. The employee was a college student pulling a part time job to make money for tuition fee.

According to the article in a newspaper, all fast-food franchises are using the 30-minutes delivery or free slogan. So pizza delivery man are oftentimes forced to endanger their lives to keep the promise that pizza franchises make to the customers.

Members in chungJu English Debate Club read this article and discussed this matter. I have a negative attitude the 30-minute delivery system.

The members who are favorable to the system said, "A delivery man should take care of his life by himself. Not all the delivery man get car accidents." So they seem to think it is only the delivery man's own problems whether traffic accidents happen during their pizza delivery.

The members, including me, who are unfavorable to the system said, "Pizza franchise impose excessive burden on delivery man, which forces delivery man to run faster ignoring many traffic rules. It's not only their own problem that delivery men often get car accidents on their way to carry a pizza."

I added, "I am opposed to the surcharge system. Rather, pizza franchise should give part-timers more money when they finished delivering in time. Plus when good is more incentive than minus when bad. If pizza franchise do that, delivery man will work hard to earn more money and also be careful with driving a motorcycle. It's because there in fewer persons who want to sacrifice their own lives for earning money." But the peers in my group are opposed to my opinion because there may be someone who is willing to risk his or her own life for money. I think they are extremely humane.

The favorable members said, "Consumers have the right to eat warm and fresh pizza." Then we said, however, "Consumers want to eat as soon as possible, but saving one person's life is more important than any little thing like that."

After a discussion of this problem, we came to the conclusion concluding some solutions; If short limited time(30minutes) causes delivery man to make accident to death, extending the delivery time for a little longer one, such as 40 minutes, will be very helpful to deliverers. If 30-minute delivery system exists to give consumers a hot pizza, pizza franchises need to develop the pizza box which can keep pizza hot. Then consumer can understand a little longer time for delivering. They are still more likely to eat a warm pizza. Lastly, company should ensures the delivery men's safety instead of forcing them to risk their lives.

Our CJEDC's first discussion ended like this. Up to this time, I have thought it is natural that 30-minute delivery system should be removed. But the unfavorable members also had the reasonable and logical reasons of their own. I felt I should consider more diversifying viewpoint.
