- Captain Winkle thought Sam was rather rude.

- That night, while the rest of the sailors snored in their bunks, Sam sat guard.

But he was exhausted after his hard day's work.

Soon, he was fast asleep as well.

Hours later, Sam was woken from his dreams by a wicked laugh.

He rushed up on deck, to see the dreaded Masked Pirate sailing off with Captain Winkle's treasure.

Sam felt terrible.
: 샘은 두려움을 느꼈다.
What would the captain say?

He didn't have to wait long to find out.
: 그는 오랫동안 망설일 필요가 없었다.
"#@%#$@!!!" shouted Captain Winkle.
: "#@%#$@!!!" 윈켈 선장이 소리쳤다.
When Captain Winkle had calmed down, he offered a reward to whoever could track down the thief of his treasure.
: 윈켈 선장은 진정했을 때, 그의 보물이나 도둑을 찾아주는 사람에게 보상을 하기로 했다.

- But, as the pirate always wore a mask, no one knew what he looked like.

Suddenly, Sam had on idea.

"I'll find the pirate and your treasure." said Sam

Captain Winkel didn't have much confidence in his cabin boy, but no one else had a plan.

That evening, Sam went to the Spyglass Inn, Where the local pirates spent the night.

- As breakfast next morning, Sam said in a loud voice, "I heard the Masked Pirate talking in his sleep last night."

"He described the spot where he hides his treasure!" said Sam.

제 1장 - 페가수스
Long ago in Greece, there lived a handsome prince named Bellerphon.
: 먼 옛날 그리스, 거기에 벨러폰이라는 이름을가진 멋진 왕자가 살았다.
He was strong, brave, and love by everyone...
: 그는 힘이 세고, 용감하고, 그리고 모든이를 사랑했다....
except the king.
: 왕 만 빼고.
The king wanted to get rid of Bellerophon.
: 왕은 벨러폰을 처리하고 싶어했다.
So, he thought up a plan and sent for the prince.
: 그래서, 그는 왕자를 보내기 위해 계획을 세웠다.
"You must kill the Chimera, a terrible beast that keeps eating my people."
: "너는 키메라를 죽여야 한다, 끔찍한 동물이 내 백성들을 계속해서 먹고있다.
"Think you're brave, do you?" he sneered.
: "넌 용감하다고 생각한다, 너는 하겠느냐?" 그가 비웃었다.
"We'll soon see about that."
: "이내 이것에 대해 생각해 보거라."
Eager to obey his king, Bellerophon set off to find the monster.
: 그의 왕에게 복종하고 싶어하여, 벨러폰은 괴물을 찾으러 출발했다.
On the way, an old lady stopped him.
: (찾으러)가는 중에, 한 늙은 여자가 그를 세웠다.
"First, you must catch the winged horse, Pegasus," she said.
: "첫째, 너는 날개있는 말을 잡아야 한다, 페가수스," 그녀가 말했다.
"Find Pegasus and you will be safe from the beast. Pegasus is strong and swift and flies like a bird."
: "너는 페가수스를 찾아야 괴물로 부터 안전해 질 수있다. 페가수스는 힘이 세고 빠르고 새와 같이 날 수 있다."
After searching for day, Bellerophon found the horse high up in the mountains.
: 후에 수색하는 중에, 벨러폰은 산 높은곳에 말이 있는것을 발견했다.

- "What a beauty," he gasped.
: "아름답구나," 그는 숨을 급히 몰아쉬었다.
"I'll never be able to catch him!" he thought.

Pegasus was wild and free, with powerful beating wings.
: 강력한 날개짓과 함께, 페가수스는 야생적이였고 자유로웠다.
Catching him wouldn't be easy.
: 그가 잡는다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니였다.
In a flash of silvery light, the goddess Athene appeared.
: 은 빛이 번쩍이더니, 아테네 여신이 나타났다.
She held out a golden bridle to Bellerophon.
: 그녀는 벨러폰에게 금색 고삐를 내밀었다.
"This is a magic bridle. It will help you catch pegasus."
: "이건 마법의 고삐이다. 이것은 네가 페가수스를 잡는것을 도와줄 것이다."
"If you put this over the horse's head, Pegasus will become tame," she said.
: "만약 네가 말의 머리에 이것을 장착하면, 페가수스는 길들여질 것이다," 그녀가 말했다.

- Bellerphon thanked Athene and hid behind a rock near a river.

When Pegasus came to drink, Bellerphon tiptoed out.
: 페가수스가 (물을)마시러 올 때, 벨러폰은 소리없이 다가갔다.

- Very quietly, he crept up to Pegasus and slipped the bridle over the horse's head.
: 매우 은밀스럽게, 그는 페가수스에게 몰래 다가가서 말의 머리에 슬그머니 고삐를 채웠다.
Startled, Pegasus reared up.
:펄쩍 뛰었다, 페가수스의 엉덩이가 올라갔다.
"Steady," said Bellerophon.
: "침착해," 벨러폰이 말했다.
The horse calmed down and Bellerphon climbed onto his back.
: 말은 평온해 졌고 벨러폰은 그의 등에 올라탔다.
Spreading his wings, Pegasus soared into the sky.
: 그는 날개를 펼쳤다, 페가수스는 하늘 높이 날아올랐다.
As they flew on, the air grew hot, steamy and smelly.
: 그들이 날아올랐다, 뜨거운 열이 발생했고, 안개와 냄새가 났다.

- "Ugh!" said the prince as he sniffed.
: "어!" 왕자가 냄새를 맡고 말했다.
"That's disgusting! We must be near the Chimera."
: "정말 싫어! 우리 주변에 키메라가 있나보다."
They flew down in time to see the beast leaving its cave.
: 그들은 때를 보아 짐승이 살고있는 동굴 앞으로 내려왔다.
The Chimera didn't have just one head.
: 키메라는 머리가 단지 한 개는 아니였다.
It had tow: a goat-head, with terrible horns, and a lion-head which breathed fire.
: 머리가 두개였는데: 염소 머리는, 끔찍한 두개의 뿔이 있었고, 사자의 머리는 불을 내뿜고 있었다.

- Even its tail was an evil-looking snake.
: 꼬리조차 사악해 보이는 뱀이였다.
It spat at Bellerophon, trying to sting him with poison.
: 벨러폰이 침을 뱉자, 그에게 독을 뿜었다.
Pegasus flew closer and the prince fired his arrows.
: 페가수스는 가까이 날아올랐고 왕자는 (괴물이 내뿜는)불길사이로 그의 화살을 쐈다.
The lion roared.
: 사자가 으르렁 거렸다.
Huge flames shot from its mouth.
: 그 입으로 부터 나오는 높은 불을 향해 쐈다.

- Magical Animals (page 13~14)
- Pegasus rose above the fire and Bellerophon shot more arrows.
: 페가수스가 불 위쪽으로 날아 오르고 벨러폰이 더 많은 화살을 쐈다.
They struck the goat-head and the snake-tail.
: 그들 염소머리와 그리고 뱀의 꼬리는 맞부딪쳤다.
Then the prince took out his spear and stuck a lump of lead on the end of it.
: 그리고 왕자는 그의 창을 꺼낸 뒤 그리고 그것의 끝 부분의 납덩어리를 꽂았습니다.
The mouth of the lion-head opened wide to roar and Bellerophon plunged his spear down the lion-head's throat.
: 사자머리가 으르렁 거리며 입을 크게 열고 벨러폰이 그의 창을 사자머리의 목구멍으로 던져 넣었다.
As the lead melted, the lion-head gave a howl of pain and the beast collapsed.
: 납이 녹으면서, 사자머리가 고통스럽게 짖으면서 짐승은 쓰러졌다.
The Chimera was dead.
: 키메라는 죽었다.

- Bellerphon went back to the king and told him the good news.

"I've killed the Chimera, your majesty!"

The king wasn't too pleased, but his people were delighted.
: 왕은 기뻐하지 않았다, 하지만 그의 백성들은 매우 기뻐했다.
"Bellerphon's a hero," they crid.
: "벨러폰은 영웅이다," 그들이 소리쳤다.
"He's like a god!"
: "그는 신과 같아!"
All this praise made Bellerophon big-headed.
: 모든것은 벨러폰을 자만하게 만들었다.

- "Maybe I am a god," he said.

"If I beat the Chimera, I must be!"

So he flew to mount Olympus, where the gods lived.
: 그리고 그는 올림푸스로 날아 올랐다, 신들이 사는 곳에.
Zeus, the king of the gods, was annoyed to see the prince and sent a bee to sting Pegasus.
: 제우스, 신 중의 왕, 왕자가 불쾌한 짓을 하는것을 보고 벌을 보네 페가수스를 찌르게 하였다.
The horse reared up, throwing Bellerphon off.
: 말은 일어났고, 벨러폰은 팽개쳐 나갔다.
"Think he's a god, huh? That's shown him!" said Zeus.
: "그가 신이라고 생각해, 하? 그는 (신처럼)보이지 않아!" 제우스가 말했다.
Bellerophon fell through the clouds to the ground and was killed in an instant.
: 벨러폰은 구름을 뚫고 땅으로 떨어져서 즉사했다.

- Then Zeus caught Pegasus and rode him home to Mount Olympus.
: 그리고 제우스는 페가수스를 잡아 그의 집인 올림푸스 산으로 타고갔다.
From that day on, Pegasus lived with the gods, pulling Zeus across the sky in a chariot made of gold.
: 그날부터, 페가수스는 신들과 함께 살았고, 제우스가 하늘을 가로지르는 마차를 당기는것은 금으로 만들어 졌다.
Chapter Two - The greedy griffin

Hassan was a farmer, but the only animals on his farm were his two beloved oxen.

- One day, he was working in the fields when, suddenly, the ske went dark.

- Was it about to rain?

But he didn't see a cloud overhead...

...he saw a griffin!

A griffin was a terrifying creature.
: 그리핀은 무서운 생물이었다.
It had the head and wings of an eagle, But the body of a lion.
: 머리를 가지고있고 독수리의 날개를 가지고 있었지만, 그러나 사자의 몸이었다.
Swooping down, the griffin snatched up the two oxen in its lion's claws.
: (그리핀이)위에서 덮치듯 하강하여, 그리핀은 사자의 손으로 두 마리의 소를 움켜 잡았다.
Hassan ran away in terror.
: 하산은 무서워서 멀리까지 뛰었다.
With a few flaps of its giant wings, the griffin was gone.
: 날개를 퍼드덕 거리면서, 그리핀은 사라졌다.
Back at home, Hassan sat down and wept.
: 집에 돌아와서, 하산은 주저앉아 눈물을 흘렸다.
"There is no hope," he sobbed.
: "거기는 가망이 없어," 그가 흐느끼며 울었다.
"The griffin will eat my oxen. I have nothing." His friends tried to cheer him up.
: "그리핀은 나의 소를 먹을꺼야. 나는 허망해" 그의 친구가 그를 격려해 주었다.
"We'll go and resue them!"
: "우리가 가서 그들을 구출 할 것이다!"

- Feeling a little better, Hassan and his friends set off to find the griffin.
: 조금 더 낳게 느끼면서, 하산과 그의 친구들은 그리핀을 찾아 나섰다.
For hours they climbed, higher and higher into the mountains.
: 한시간 동안 그들은 올라갔다, 높고 높은 산들을.
All at once, Hassan stopped.
: 한 차례, 하산은 멈추었다.
Higher up the mountain still, they came across what they thought was a strange plant.
: 높은 산을 올라도 조용하다, 그들은 가로질러 오면서 이상한 식물을 발견했다.
"What a funny tree," said one of the men.
: "재밌게 생긴 나무네," 한 남자가 말했다.
Hassan shook his head.
: 하산은 그의 머리를 흔들었다.
"It's not a tree," he said.
: "이건 나무가 아니야," 그가 말했다.

- Just then, they heard a loud noise.
: 바로 그 때, 그들은 시끄러운 코골이를 들었다.
Ahhhhhhh... uhhhhh.
: 아... 어.
"W-w-w-what's that?" the men whispered, looking over the rocks.
: "뭐,뭐,뭐,뭐지?" 사람들이 은밀히 말했다, 바위 넘어를 보면서.
There was the griffin, fast asleep and snoring, with the ox trapped by its paw.
: 거기에는 그리핀이 있었다, 깊은 잠에 빠져 코를 고는 중이었다, 발에는 소를 잡고.
"Quick, before it wakes!" cried Hassan.
: "빨리, 일어나기전에!" 하산이 소리쳤다.
As fast as they could, the men put arrows to their bows and fired them.
: 그들은 최대한 빨리, 그들의 활에 화살을 장전하고 거기에 불을 붙였다.
The griffin woke up with a mighty bellow. But it was too late.
: 그리핀이 일어나서 강력한 울음소리를 내뱉었다. 하지만 너무 늦었다.
A hail of arrows struck its chest.
: 화살이 (그리핀의)가슴으로 쏟아졌다.
As the griffin fell back, Hassan's ox jumped up and ran to safety.
: 그리핀은 뒤로 떨어지고, 하산의 소는 점프를 하고 안전한 곳으로 뛰었다.
And, from then on, whenever Hassan worked in his fields, he checked for strange clouds first.
: 그리고, 그 이후로 부터, 하산은 그의 농장에서 일할때 마다, 구름이 이상한지를 첫번째로 살폈다.
