It took me a long time to understand where he come from.
-그가 어디서 왔는지를 아는 데는 오랜 시간이 걸렸다.
The little prince,who asked me so many questions,never seemed to hear the ones I asked him.
-어린 왕자는 내게 많은 것을 질문 하면서도 내 질문에는 귀를 기울이지 않는 것 같았다.
It was things he said quite at random that,bit by bit,explained everything.
-그가 우연히 한 말들이 서서히 모든 것을 알게 해주었다.
For instance,when he first caught sight of my airplane (I won`t draw my airplane;that would be much too complicated for me)he asked:"What`s that thing over there?"
-가령,나의 비행기를 처음 보았을 때 (내 비행기는 그리지 않겠다.그것은 나에게는 너무나 복잡한 그림이니까)그는 나에게 "이 물건은 도대체 뭐야?"라고 물었다.
"It`s not a thing.It flies.It`s an airplane.My airplane."
-"이건 물건이 아니야.이건 날아다니는 거야.비행기지.나의 비행기야."
And I was proud to tell him I could fly.
-내가 날아다닌다는 것을 그에게 가르쳐주면서 나는 자랑스러워졌다.
Then he exclaimed:"What!You fell out of the sky?"
-그랬더니 "뭐!네가 하늘에서 떨어졌다고?"라며 그는 소리쳤다.
"Yes,"I said modestly.
-"그래,"난 겸손하게 말했다.
"Oh!That`s funny..."
-"오!그거 참 재미있다..."
And the little prince broke into a lovely peal of laughter,which annoyed me a good deal.
-그리고는 어린 왕자는 유쾌하게 까르르 웃었으므로 나는 기분이 몹시 언짢아졌다.
I like my misfortunes to be taken seriously.
-나는 내 불행을 진지하게 생각해 주지 않는 것은 싫기 때문이다.
Then he added,"So you fell out of the sky,too.What planet are you from?"
-그러자 그는 "그럼 너도 나처럼 하늘에서 온거네.어느 별에서 왔어?"라고 말했다.
That was when I had the first clue to the mystery of his presence,and I questioned him sharply.
-나는 문득 그의 존재의 신비로움을 이해하는 데 한 줄기 빛이 비치는 걸 깨닫고 갑자기 물었다.
"Do you come from another planet?"
-"그럼 넌 다른 별에서 온거니?"
But he made no answer.
-그러나 그는 대답을 하지 않았다.
He shook his head a little,still staring my airplane.
-그는 내 비행기를 바라보며 신중한 눈빛으로 고개를 끄덕였다.
"Of course,that couldn`t have brought you from very far..."
-"당연히,저걸 타고서는 멀리서 오지 못했겠군..."
And he fell into a reverie that Iasted a long while.
-그리고는 한참 동안 깊이 생각에 잠겨버렸다.
Then,taking my sheep out of his pocket,he plunged into contemplation of his treasure.
-그 후,포켓에서 내가 그려 준 양의 그림을 꺼내서 그 보물을 열심히 들여다 보았다.
You can imagine how intrigued I was by this hint about "other planets."
-여러분들은 "다른 별들."이라는,그가 슬쩍 내비친 비밀에 내가 얼마나 호기심으로 몸이 달았겠는가를 짐작할 수 있을 것이다.
I tried to learn more:"Where do you come from,little fellow?Where is this 'where I live'of yours?Where will you be taking my sheep?"
-난 애를 쓰며 그에게 "얘,너는 어디서 왔니?네 집이란 어디를 두고 하는 말이니?내 양을 어디로 데리고 가려는거야?"라고 더 물었다.
After a thoughtful silence he answered,"The good thing about the crate you`ve given me is that he can use it for a house after dark."
-그 후 그는 말 없이 생각에 잠기더니 "네가 준 상자가 밤에는 집이 될 테니까 잘 됐어."라고 대답했다.
"Of course.And if you`re good,I`ll give you a rope to tie him up during the day.And a stake to tie him to."
-"그렇고 말고.그리고 네가 착하게만 하면,밤에 양을 매 놓을 수 있는 고삐를 줄게.말뚝도 주고."
This proposition seemed to shock the little prince.
-이 제안은 어린 왕자를 몹시 놀라게 한 것 같았다.
"Tie him up?What a funny idea!"
-"매 놓다니?참 이상한 생각이야!"
"But if you don`t tie him up,he`ll wander off somewhere and get lost."
-"하지만 매 놓지 않으면,그가 아무 데나 가서 길을 잃어버릴 수도 있을텐데."
My friend burst out laughing again.
-그러자 나의 친구는 다시 까르르 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
"Where could he go?"
-"가긴 어딜 간다고 그래?"
"Anywhere.Straight ahead..."
-"어디든지.곧장 앞으로..."
Then the little prince remarked quite seriously,"Even if he did,everything`s so small where I live!"
-그랬더니 어린 왕자는 진지한 눈빛으로 "괜찮아,내가 사는 곳은 아주 작으니까!"라고 말했다.
And he added,perhaps a little sadly,"Straight ahead,you can`t go very far."
-그리고는 서글픈 기분이 드는지 "앞으로 곧장 가도 멀리 갈 수가 없는걸."이라고 조금 더 덧붙였다.

That was how I had learned a second very important thing,which was that the planet he came from was hardly bigger than a house!

That couldn`t surprise me much.
-그것은 나에게 놀라운 일이 아니었다.
I knew very well that except for the huge planets like Earth,Jupiter,Mars,and Venus,which have been given names,there are hundreds of others that are sometimes so small that it`s very difficult to see them through a telecope.
-난 지구,목성,화성,금성 같이 사람들이 이름을 붙여 놓은 커다란 떠돌이 별들 말고도 수 백개의 다른 떠돌이 별이 있는데 어떤 것들은 너무도 작아서 망원경으로도 잡히기 힘들 정도라는 것을 잘 알고 있었기 때문이다.
When an astronomer discovers one of them,he gives it a number instead of a name.
-천문학자들은 그런 별을 발견하면 이름 대신 번호를 매겨준다.
For instance,he would call it "Asteroid 325."
-예를 들면,"소혹성 325호"라는 식으로 부르는 것이다.
I have serious reasons to believe that the planet the little prince came from a Asteroid B-612.
-나는 어린 왕자가 살던 별이 소혹성 B612호 라고 믿을 만한 상당한 근거를 가지고 있다.
This asteroid has been sighted only once by telescope,in 1909 by a Turkish astronomer,who had then made a formal demonstration of his discovery at an International Astronomical Congress.
-그 혹성은 딱 한 번,1909년에 터키 천문학자에 의해 망원경에 잡힌 적이 있었고,그 당시 그는 국제 천문학회에서 자신의 발견을 훌륭히 증명해 보였었다.
But no one had believed him on account of the way he was dressed.
-그러나 그가 입은 옷 때문에 아무도 그의 말을 믿어주지 않았었다.
Gown ups are like that.

- Fortunately for the reputation of Asteroid B-612,a Turkish dictator ordered his people,on pain of death,to wear European clothes.
-터키의 한 독재자가 국민들에게 서양식 옷을 입지 않으면 사형에 처한다고 강요한 것은 소혹성 B612호의 명성을 위해서는 다행스러운 일이었다.
The astronomer repeated his demonstration in 1920,wearing a very elegant suit.
-그 천문학자는 1920년에 매우 멋진 옷을 입고 다시 그것을 증명했다.
And this time everyone believed him.
-그러자 이번에는 모든 사람들이 그의 말을 믿었다.
If I`ve told you these details about Asteroid B-612 and if I`ve given you its number,it is on account of the grown ups.
-내가 소혹성 B612호에 관해 이렇게 자세하게 이야기하고 그 번호까지 알려주는 것은 어른들 때문이다.
Grown ups like numbers.
-어른들은 숫자를 좋아한다.
When you tell them about a new friend,they never asked questions about what really matters.
-새로 사귄 친구 이야기를 할 때면 그들은 가장 긴요한 것은 물어본 적이 없다.
They never ask:"What does his voice sound like?" "What games does he like best?" "Does he collect butterflies?"
-그들은 "그 아이의 목소리는 어떻니?" "그 아이가 좋아하는 놀이는 무엇이니?" "나비를 수집하니?"라는 말은 절대로 하지 않았다.
They ask:"How old is he?" "How many brothers does he have?" "How much does he weigh?" "How much money does his father make?"
-그들은 "그는 몇 살이니?" "그의 형제는 몇이니?" "체중은 얼마니?" "아버지 수입은 얼마야?"하고 묻는다.
Only then do they think they know him.
-그제서야 그 친구가 어떤 사람인지 알게 된 줄로 생각하는 것이다.
If you tell grown ups,"I saw a beautiful red brick house,with geraniums at the windows and doves on the roof...,"they won`t be able to imagine such a house.
-만약 어른들에게 "창턱에는 제라늄 화분이 있고 지붕에는 비둘기가 있는 분홍빛의 벽돌집을 보았어요...,"라고 말하면 그들은 그 집이 어떤 집인지 상상하지 못한다.

- You have to tell them,"I saw a house worth a hundred thousand francs."
-그들에게는 "십 만 프랑 짜리의 집을 보았어요."라고 말해야만 한다.
Then they exclaim,"What a pretty house!"
-그러면 그들은 "참 좋은 집이구나!"하고 소리친다.
So if you tell them:"The proof of the little prince`s existence is that he was delightful,that he laughed,and that he wanted a sheep.When someone wants a sheep,that proves he exists,"they shrug their shoulders and treat you like a child!
-그래서 "어린 왕자가 매혹적이었고,웃었고,양 한 마리를 가지고 싶어했다는 것이 그가 이 세상에 있었던 증거야.어떤 사람이 양을 가지고 싶어했다는 것이,그가 이 세상에 있었던 증거야,"라고 말한다면 그들은 어깨를 으쓱하며 여러분을 어린 아이 취급할 것이다!
But if you tell them:"The planet he came from is Asteroid B-612,"then they`ll be convinced,and they won`t bother you with their questions.
-그러나 "그가 떠나온 별은 소혹성 B612호 입니다."라고 말하면 수긍을 하고 더 이상 질문을 하면서 귀찮게 굴지도 않을 것이다.
That`s the way they are.
-어른들은 다 그런 것이다.
You must not hold is against them.
-그들을 나쁘게 생각해서는 안 된다.
Children should be very understanding of grown ups.
-아이들은 어른들을 항상 너그럽게 대해야만 한다.
But,of course,those of us who understand life couldn`t care less about numbers!
-하지만 인생을 이해하는 우리는 숫자 같은 것은 아랑곳하지 않는다!
I should have liked to begin this story like a fairy tale.
-나는 이 이야기를 동화 같은 식으로 시작하고 싶었다.
I should have liked to say:"Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet hardly any bigger than he was,and who needed a friend..."
-난 "옛날에 저보다 좀 더 클까 말까한 별에서 살고 있는 어린 왕자가 있었는데 그는 친구를 필요로 했었습니다..."라고 말하고 싶었다.

The fact is,I don`t want my book to be taken lightly.
-왜냐하면,난 사람들이 이 책을 건성으로 읽는 것을 바라지 않기 때문이다.
Telling these memories is so painful for me.
-이 추억을 이야기 하면서 난 깊은 슬픔을 느낀다.
It`s already been six years since my friend went away,taking his sheep with him.
-나의 친구가 그의 양과 함께 떠난지도 벌써 여섯 해가 된다.
If I try to describe him here,it`s so I won`t forget him.

It`s sad to forget a friend.

Which is still another reason why I`ve bought a box of paints and some pencils.
-내가 그림 물감 한 상자와 연필을 산 것은 이런 까닭에서였다.
It`s hard to go back to drawing,at my age,when you`ve never made any attempts since the one of a boa from inside and the one of a boa from outside,at the age of six!
-여섯 살 적에 속이 보이거나 보이지 않는 보아뱀 이외에는 그림을 그려본 일이 없는 사람이 이 나이에 다시 그림을 그린다는 것은 정말 힘든 일이었다!

Every day I`d learn something about the little prince`s planet,about his departure,about his journey.
-매일 나는 어린왕자에게 자신이 어느 행성에서 왔는지,자신이 행성에서 언제 출발 했는지,여행인지에 대해서 들었다.
It would come quite gradually,in the course of his remarks.
-어린 왕자가 무심코 하는 말에 의해 서서히 알게 된 것이다.
This was how I learned,on the third day,about the drama of the baobabs.
-사흘 째 되는 날,바오밥나무의 비극을 알게 된 것도 그렇게 해서였다.
This time,too,I had the sheep to thank,for suddenly the little prince asked me a question,as if overcome by a grave doubt.
-이번에도 역시 양 덕분이었고,어린 왕자가 심각한 의문이 생긴 듯 갑자기 물었다.
"Isn`t it true that sheep eat bushes?"
-"양이 작은 나무를 먹는다는 게 사실이지?"
"Yes,that`s right."
-"그럼,사실이지."
"Ah!I`m glad."
-"아!그럼 잘됐네."
I didn`t understand why it was so important that sheep should eat bushes.
-나는 양이 작은 나무를 먹는다는 사실이 왜 그렇게 중요한 것인지 이해할 수 없었다.
But the little prince added:"And therefore they eat baobabs,too?"
-그러나 어린 왕자는 "그럼 바오밥나무도 먹겠지?"라고 말을 이었다.
I pointed out to the little prince that baobabs are not bushes but trees as tall as churches,and that even if he took a whole herd of elephants back to his planet,that herd couldn`t finish off a single baobab.
-나는 어린 왕자에게는 바오밥나무가 작은 나무가 아닌 성당만큼 거대한 나무고,한 떼의 코끼리를 데려간다고 해도 바오밥 한 그루도 다 먹지 못할 것이라고 알려주었다.

- The idea of the herd of elephants made the little prince laugh.
-한 떼의 코끼리라는 말에 어린 왕자는 웃으며 말했다.
"We`d have to pile them on top of one another."

But he observed perceptively.
-그런데 그가 총명하게도 이런 말을 했다.
"Before they grow big,baobabs start out by being little."
-"바오밥나무도 커다랗게 자라기 전에는 작은 나무잖아."
"True enough!But why do you want your sheep to eat little baobabs?"
-"물론이지!그런데 왜 양이 바오밥나무를 먹어야 된다는 거지?"
He answered,"Oh,come on! You know!"as if we were talking about something quite obvious.

And I was forced to make a great mental effort to understand this problem all by myself.
-그리고 나는 혼자서 그 말을 이해하느라 머리를 써야만 했다.
And,in fact,on the little prince`s planet there were-as on all planets-good plants and bad plants.
-어린 왕자가 사는 별에는 다른 모든 별들과 마찬가지로 좋은 풀들과 나쁜 풀들이 있었던 것이다.
The good plants come from good seeds,and the bad plants from bad seeds.

But the seeds are invisible.

- They sleep in the secrecy of the ground until one of them decides to wake up.

Then it stretches and begins to sprout,quite timidly at first,a charming,harmless little twig reaching toward the sun.

If it`s a radish seed,or a rosebush seed,you can let it sprout all it likes.
-만약 그것이 무나 장미의 싹이면 그대로 내버려 두어도 된다.
But if it`s the seed of a bad plant,you must pull the plant up right away,as soon as you can recognize it.
-그러나 만약 이 식물이 나쁜 식물일 경우,그들은 눈에 띄는 대로 뽑아 버려야 한다.
As it happens,there were terrible seeds on the little prince`s planet...baobab seeds.
-그런데 어린 왕자의 별에는 무서운 씨앗들이 있었다...바오밥나무의 씨앗이었다.
The planet`s soil was infested with them.
-그 별의 땅에는 바오밥나무 씨앗 투성이 였다.
Now if you attend to a baobab too late,you can never get rid of it again.
-그런데 바오밥나무는 너무 늦게 손을 대면,영영 없애 버릴 수가 없게 된다.
It overgrows the whole planet.
-별을 온통 엉망으로 만드는 것이다.
Its roots pierce right through.
-뿌리로 별에 구멍을 뚫어버린다.
And if the planet is too small,and if there are too many baobabs,they make it burst into pieces.
-그리고 별은 너무 작은데,바오밥나무가 너무 많아지면,그들은 별을 산산조각 내버리고 만다.

- "It`s a question of discipline,"the little prince told me later on.
-"그건 기율이 문제야,"어린 왕자가 훗날 나에게 이렇게 말을 하였다.
"When you`ve finished washing and dressing each morning,you must tend your planet.You must be sure you pull up the baobabs regularly,as soon as you can tell them apart from the rosebushes,which they closely resemble when they`re very young.It`s very tedious work,but very easy."
-"아침에 몸단장을 하고 나면,정성들여 별의 몸단장을 해주어야 해.규칙적으로 신경을 써서 장미와 구별할 수 있게 되는 즉시 곧 그 바오밥나무를 뽑아 버려야 하거든.바오밥나무는 아주 어렸을 때에는 장미와 매우 흡사하게 생겼어.그것은 귀찮은 일이지만 쉬운 일이기도 하지."
And one day he advised me to do my best to make a beautiful drawing,for the edification of the children where I live.
-그리고는 우리 땅에 사는 어린 아이들 머릿속에 꼭 박히도록 예쁜 그림을 하나 그려보라고 했다.
"If they travel someday,"he told me,"it could be useful to them.Sometimes there`s no harm in postponing your work until later.But with baobabs,it`s always a catastrophe.I knew one planet that was inhabited by a lazy man.He had neglected three bushes..."
-"만약 그들은 언젠가 여행을 하게 될거야,"그는 "이것은 그들에게 도움이 될 수도 있을 것이고 말이야.할 일을 뒤로 미루는 것이 때로는 아무렇지도 않을 수 있지.하지만 바오밥나무는 그랬다가는 언제나 큰 재난이 따르는 법이야.게으름뱅이가 살고 있는 어느 별을 나는 알고 있었어.그는 작은 나무 세 그루를 무심히 내버려 두었었지..."라고 나메에 말했다.
So,following the little prince`s instructions,I have drawn that planet.
-그래서 어린왕자가 가르쳐 주는 대로 나는 그 별을 그렸다.
I don`t much like assuming the tone of a moralist.
-나는 성인군자와 같은 투로 말하기는 싫다.
But the danger of baobabs is so little recognized,and the risks run by anyone who might get lost on an asteroid are so considerable,that for once I am making an exception to my habitual reserve.
-그러나 바오밥나무의 위험은 너무도 잘 알려져 있지 않고 소혹성에서 길을 잃게 될 사람이 겪을 위험은 너무도 크기 때문에,난생 처음으로 나는 그런 조심성을 버리고 이렇게 말하려 한다.
I say,"Children,watch out for baobabs!"

It`s to warn my friends of a danger of which they,like myself,have long been unaware that I worked so hard on this drawing.
-내가 이 그림을 이처럼 정성스럽게 그린 것은 내 친구들에게 경각심을 불러일으키기 위해서인 것이다.
The lesson I`m teaching is worth the trouble.
-그러니 내가 그린 그림은 정말 가치있는 것이다.
You may be asking,"Why are there no other drawings in this book as big as the drawing of the baobabs?"
-여러분은 "이 책에는 왜 바오밥나무의 그림만큼 장엄한 그림들이 또 없을까?"라는 의문이 들수도 있다.
There`s a simple answer:I tried but I couldn`t manage it.When I drew the baobabs,I was inspired by a sense of urgency.
-그 대답은 간단하다:난 다른 그림도 그렇게 그려보려 애를 썼지만 뜻대로 되지 않은 것이다.바오밥 나무를 그릴 때에는 급박한 심정으로 열성을 지니고 그렸던 것이다.

Gradually,this was how I came to understand your sad little life.
-너의 쓸쓸하고 단순한 생활을 이렇게 해서 나는 조금씩 알게 되었지.
For a long time your only entertainment was the pleasure of sunsets.
-너에게는 오랫동안 심심풀이라고는 해질 녘의 감미로움 밖에 없없지.
I learned this new detail on the morning of the fourth day,when you told me:
-나흘 째 되는 날 아침,나는 그 새로운 사실을 알게 되었지.
"I really like sunsets.Let`s go look at one now..."
-"나는 해질 무렵을 좋아해.지금 해지는 걸 보러가는 중이야..."
"But we have to wait..."
-"하지만 우리는 기다려야해..."
"What for?"
-"뭘 기다려야 하는데?"
"For the sun to set."
-"해지는 걸 말이야."

- At first you seemed quite surprised,and then you laughed at yourself.
-너는 처음에는 몹시 놀라는 기색이었으나,곧 자기 말이 우스운 듯 웃음을 터뜨렸지.
And you said to me,"I think I`m still at home!"
-그리고 나에게 "아직도 집에 있는 것만 같거든!"이라고 말했지.
Indeed.
-실제로 그럴 수도 있는 일이었다.
When it`s noon in the United States,the sun,as everyone knows,is setting over France.
-모두들 알고 있듯이 미국에서 정오일 때 프랑스에서는 해가 진다.
If you could fly to France in one minute,you could watch the sunset.
-만약 당신이 프랑스로 단숨에 날아갈 수 만 있다면,해가 지는 광경을 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Unfortunately France is much too far.
-불행히도 프랑스는 너무 멀리 떨어진 곳에 있다.
But on your tiny planet,all you had to do was move your chair a few feet.
-그러나 너의 조그마한 별에서는,의자를 몇 발짝 뒤로 물려 놓기만 하면 되었지.
And you would watch the twilight whenever you wanted to...
-그래서 언제나 원할 때면 너는 석양을 바라볼 수 있었지...
"One day I saw the sun set forty-four times!"
-"어느 날 나는 해가 지는 걸 마흔 네번이나 봤어!"
And a little later you added,"You know,when you`re feeling very sad,sunsets are wonderful..."
-그리고 잠시 후 너는 다시 "몹시 슬플 때에는 해지는 모습을 좋아하게 되지..."라고 말했지.
"On the day of the forty-four times,were you feeling very sad?"
-"그럼 마흔 네번이나 봤을 때는,넌 슬펐니?"
But the little prince didn`t answer.
-그러나 어린 왕자는 대답이 없었다.

On the fifth day,thanks again to the sheep,another secret of the little prince`s life was revealed to me.
-5일이 지나고,나는 어린 왕자가 나에게 새로운 비밀을 드러내면서 또 다시 양에게 감사함을 느꼈다.
Abruptly,with no preamble,he asked me,as if it were fruit of a problem long pondered in silence.
-갑자기,서론과 함께 긴 침묵 속에서 곰곰히 생각을 하고 나에게 질문을 했다.
"If a sheep eats bushes,does it eat flowers,too?"
-"혹시 양은 먹이를 먹을 때,좋지 않는 것이 있는 꽃도 먹어?"
"A sheep eats whatever it finds."
-"양은 먹이가 어떤 것이든 다 먹지."
"Even flowers that have thorns?"
-"가시가 있는 꽃도 말이야?"
"Yes.Even flowers that have thorns."
-"그래.가시가 있는 꽃도 먹어."
"Then what good are thorns?"
-"가시를 왜 좋아하는 거야?"
I didn`t know.
-나는 알지 못했다.
At that moment I was very busy trying to unscrew a bolt that was jammed in my engine.
-잠깐 나는 매우 어렵고 혼잡한 엔진을 고치는 일을 하고 있었다.
I was quite worried,for my plane crash was beginning to seem extremely serious,and the lack of drinking water made me fear the worst.
-난 상당히 걱정을 하고 나의 나의 비행기 사고를 극히 심각하게 보고 있었으며 점점 부족해지는 물을 보면서 나는 최악의 상황에 다다르는 것을 두려워 하였다.

- "What good are thorns?"
-"왜 가시를 좋아하는데?"
The little prince never let go of a question once he had asked it.
-어린 왕자는 한 가지 질문만 계속 되풀이 하였다.
I was annoyed by my jammed bolt,and I answered without thinking.
-나는 세밀한 수리를 방해해서 짜증이 났고,난 생각을 하지 않고 대답을 했다.
"Thorns are no good for anything-they`re just the flowers`way of being mean!"
-"가시는 아무 것도 소용이 없어.그들은 단지 꽃을 보호하는 것 뿐이니까!"
"Oh!"
-"오!"
But after a silence,he lashed out at me,with a sort of bitterness.
-그러나 그 후 주위는 고요해졌고,그는 나에게 비난함과 동시에,난 어느정도의 쓴 맛을 봐야했다.
"I don`t believe you!Flowers are weak.They`re naive.They reassure themselves whatever way they can.They believe their thorns make them frightening..."
-"난 널 믿을 수 없어!꽃은 약해.그들은 순진하다고.그들은 그들 스스로 안심을 시켜야만 해.그들은 그들의 가시를 만들어서 그것을 믿으며 무서움을 없애려고 하는 거라고..."

- I made no answer.
-난 대답을 하지 않았다.
At that moment I was thinking,"If this bolt stays jammed,I`ll knock it off with the hammer."
-순간 나는 "만약 이 볼트 수리를 다 하지 못하게 되면,난 여기서 죽게 될거야."라고 생각했다.
Again the little prince disturbed my reflections.
-다시 어린 왕자는 반문을 하며 나를 방해했다.
"Then you think flowers..."
-"그러니까 넌 꽃이..."
"No,not at all.I don`t think anything!I just said whatever came into my head.I`m busy here with something serious!"
-"아니야,결코 그렇지 않아.난 아무것도 생각하지 않는다고!난 단지 나의 머리가 아파서 그러는거고.난 지금 심각하게 바쁘다고!"
He started at me,astounded.
-그는 나에게서 큰 충격을 받은 듯 했다.
"Something serious!"
-"심각한 것을 하고 있다니까!"
He saw me holding my hammer,my fingers black with grease,bending over an object he regarded as very ugly.
-그는 망치를 쥐고 있는 나를 보았고,기름이 묻어 검게 변한 나의 손가락을 그는 구부러지고 못생긴 물건을 보는 듯 했다.

-"넌 어른처럼 말하고 있어!"
That made me a little ashamed.
-그것은 나를 조금 부끄럽게 만들었다.
But he added,mercilessly:"You confuse everything...You`ve got it all mixed up!"
-그러나 그는 잔인하게 "넌 모든 것을 혼란스럽게 만들고 있어...넌 모든 걸 섞고 있단 말이야!"라고 더 말하였다.

He tossed his golden curls in the wind.
-그는 창문으로 그의 황금색 컬을 던졌다.
"I know a planet inhabited by a red faced gentleman.He`s never smelled a flower.He`s never looked at a star.He`s nver loved anyone.He`s never done anything except add up numbers.And all day long he says over and over,just like you,'I`m a serious man!I`m a serious man!'And that puffs him up with pride.But he`s not a man at all-he`s a mushroom!"
-"난 어떤 행성에 살고 있는 빨간 얼굴을 가진 신사를 알고있어.그는 절대 꽃의 냄새를 맡을 수 없어.그는 절대 별을 볼수도 없지.그는 절대 누구든 사랑하지 않아.그는 모든 것에 숫자를 적어 넣지.그리고 모든 것을 길게 아주 길게 말하고,언제나 너처럼 '난 심각한 것을 하고 있는 사람이야!난 심각한 것을 하고 있는 사람이라고!'말하면서 담배를 뻐끔뻐끔 피며 자랑스러워하지.하지만 그는 사람이 아닌 버섯이야!"

- "For millions of years flowers have been producing thorns.For millions of years sheep have been eating them all the same.And it`s not serious,trying to understand why flowers go to such trouble to produce thorns that are good for nothing?It`s not important,the war between the sheep and the flowers?It`s no more serious and more important than the numbers that fat red gentleman is adding up?Suppose I happen to know a unique flower,one that exists nowhere in the world except on my plants,one that a little sheep can wipe out in a single bite one morning,just like that,without even realizing what he`s doing-that isn`t important?"
-"수 백만년동안 꽃은 가시를 만들고 있어.수 백만년동안 양은 변함없이 그 꽃을 먹으려고 노력하고 있다고.그리고 별로 심각한 것도 아닌데,왜 꽃아 그런 힘을 들여가면서 가시를 만들기 위해 노력한다고?별로 중요한 것도 아닌데,양은 꽃과 전쟁을 한다고?더 심각하지도 않고 더 중요하지도 않은 숫자밖에 생각하지 못하는 뚱뚱한 빨간 신사가 누구냐고?난 특별한 꽃을 알고 있고,세계 아무데도 나의 별에 그런게 존재하고 있다는 걸 모르는 것도,어린 양이 혼자서 아침마다 먹이를 물어서 없애는 것도,어느 날 갑자기 그들은 이해하게 될 것 인데 이게 중요하지 않다고?"
His face turned red now,and he went on.
-그의 얼굴은 붉은 색으로 변했고,또 다시 말을 하기 시작했다.
"If someone loves a flower of which just one example exists among all the millions and millions of stars,that`s enough to make him happy when he looks at the stars.He tells himself,'My flower`s up there somewhere...'But if the sheep eats the flower,then for him it`s as if,suddenly,all the stars went out.And that isn`t important?"
-"만약 누군가가 꽃을 사랑한다면 그 사람이 살아가는 동안에 수 백만개의 별이 그를 보게 될거야.그는 그 스스로 '어디선가 나의 꽃을 사랑하는 사람에게...'라고 말하겠지.하지만 만약 양이 꽃을 먹어버린다면,그를 바라보는 모든 별들이 갑자기 사라질거야.그런데 이게 중요하지 않다고?"

-난 무엇 때문에 나의 망치,볼트를 조심히 다루고,갈증과 죽음을 겪고 있는거지?
There was,on one star,on one planet,on mine,the Earth,a little prince to be consoled!
-왜 하나의 별에서,하나의 행성에서,하나의 생각을 가지고,지구에 온 어린 왕자가 날 위로해 주고 있는 것인가!

-난 나의 손을 그에게 주었다.
I rocked him.
-난 그를 흔들었다.
I told him,"The flower you love is not in danger...I`ll draw you a muzzle for your sheep...I`ll draw you a fence for your flower...I..."
-난 그에게 "네가 사랑하는 꽃을 위험하지 않게 해줄게...내가 너에게 양에게 할 수 있는 입마개를 그려줄게...너에게 꽃을 보호할 수 있는 울타리도 그려 줄게...난..."라고 말했다.

It`s so mysterious,the land of tears.
