- Finally,the Devil went to Ivan`s house.
-마침내,악마는 아이반의 집으로 갔다.
He was starving.
-그는 몹시 배가 고팠다.
Ivan invited the Devil for supper.
-아이반은 악마를 저녁식사에 초대하였다.
Ivan`s sister served the food.
-아이반의 누이는 음식을 나르는데 도움을 주었다.
But in Ivan`s kingdom,people with rough,dark,hardworking hands were served first.
-하지만 아이반의 왕국 안에서 사람들의 손은 일을 열심히 해서 거칠고,어두웠다.
Those with soft,white hands were not served at all.
-그들의 손은 부드럽고,하얗지 않았다.
These people had to wait for any food that was left.

Of course,the nobleman`s hands were soft and white,with long fingernails.

When Ivan`s sister saw them,she pushed the Devil away.

Ivan said,"Do not be offended.This is our law."

"Do you think people only work with their hands?"asked the nobleman angrily.

The Devil told Ivan that he would teach Ivan`s people how to work with their heads.

The next day,the Devil climbed a tall tower and spoke to the people.

Many common folk had come to hear him speak.

But they did not understand him.

They waited to see him do work with his head,but all he did was talk.

Finally,the Devil was so weak from hunger that he fell.

As he fell,a rope caught around his leg.

The Devil`s body swung from side to side.

His head bumped against the wall of the tower.

People said,"Finally!The nobleman is doing work with his head!"

Ivan saw the devil and said,"Well,that is a hard way to do work.It`s better to make your hands rough than bump your head."

At that moment,the rope broke and the Devil fell down.

Ivan ran to the nobleman,but saw a large Devil lying on the ground.

"In the name of our Lord,what is this?"said Ivan.

The Devil disappeared,leaving a small hole in the ground.

Ivan still lives and many people come to his kingdom.

There is one law that never changes in Ivan`s kingdom.

A long,long time ago,Scrooge and Marley had been good business partners.

Each had tried to work harder than the other.

Each had wanted to be richer than the other.
-각각 그들은 서로 부유하기를 원했다.
Even now,seven years after Marley had died,the company was still called 'Scrooge and Marley.'

His weak,brittle voice could make you hear the cold.

Feeling the cold was the worst-he kept his office very,very cold,especially at Christmas.
-최악으로 가장 차가운 것은-그가 사무실을 매우,매우 차갑게,특히 크리스마스에 차갑게 유지시킨다는 것이었다.
He hated to buy charcoal for the fire,so his office was always cold and dark.

Though it was only three o`clock in the afternoon,it was already getting dark because of the heavy,wet fog.

The only other person in the office was Bob Cratchit,Scrooge`s clerk.

He tried warming his hands over the candle he was using for light,but that couldn`t help.

"Merry Christmas,Uncle!"a cheerful voice sudenly said.

It was Scrooge`s young nephew,Fred.

"Bah,humbug,"answered Scrooge.

He looked angry about having his work interrupted.
-그는 그의 일을 방해해서 화가난 것 처럼 보였다.
"Humbug!?!Why do you think Christmas is a humbug,Uncle?"Fed looked warm.

"Surely you don`t mean that.Everyone likes Christmas."

"Yes,I do mean it,"said Scrooge.
-"응,나도 그것의 의미를 알아,"스크루지가 말했다.
"Merry Christmas,what is there to be merry about?Aren`t you poor?You have nothing to be happy about."
-"메리 크리스마스,왜 그게 즐거운 거지?넌 가난하지 않니?넌 전혀 행복하지 않아."
"Well,why aren`t you happy,Uncle?You are very rich,"Fred answered with a smile.
-"그럼,행복하세요,삼촌?삼촌은 매우 부유하잖아요,"프레드는 웃으며 대답했다.

- Scrooge was getting angry.
-스크루지는 화가 났다.
"There are many fools in the world wishing each other'Merry Christmas'when they don`t even have any money!"
-"세상에서 수 많은 바보들은 서로'메리 크리스마스'라고 말하면서 돈이 많아지길 바라고 있어!"
"Uncle,please!It`s such a nice time of year."
-"삼촌,제발 좀 요!지금은 올해에서 가장 좋은 날이라고요."
"Nice?!?What is nice?I never make any money on Christmas bacause no one ever works."
-"좋다고?!?뭐가 좋은데?난 아무도 일을 안해서 돈을 벌지 않는 크리스마스가 싫어."
Scrooge didn`t understand Christmas.
-스크루지는 크리스마스를 이해하지 못했다.
"But Christmas isn`t about money,Uncle."said Fred.
-"하지만 크리스마스는 돈과 상관없어요,삼촌."프레드는 말했다.
"I love Christmas.It`s time to be happy and generous!"
-"전 크리스마스를 사랑해요.그때는 모두가 행복하고 너그러워 지잖아요!"
Bob,in his tiny office,agreed.
-밥은,그의 아주 작은 사무실 안에서,동의했다.
"You are right,sir.Merry Christmas to you."
-"남자아이의 말이 맞아요,너도 메리 크리스마스."
"You get back to work,"Scrooge ordered.
-"넌 가서 일이나 해,"스크루지는 명령했다.
"Or you won`t have a job to be merry about."
-"안 그러면 일자리를 잃을 수도 있어."
"Don`t be angry,Uncle.I just came to invite you to Christmas dinner."
-"너무 화내지 마세요,삼촌.저는 단지 삼촌을 성탄 만찬에 초대하려고 온 거니까요."
Fred knew his uncle didn`t like Christmas,but he felt sorry for Scrooge.
-프레드는 그의 삼촌이 크리스마스를 좋아하지 않는다는 것을 알고 있었지만,그는 스크루지가 안쓰럽게 여겨졌다.
Scrooge had no family.
-스크루지는 가족이 없었다.
"No,I`m too busy.You have your Christmas,and I`ll have mine.Now leave me alone."

"Well,I`m sorry to hear that.But I wish you a merry Christmas all the same."
-"알았어요,정말 유감이네요.하지만 전 삼촌이 즐거운 크리스마스를 보냈으면 좋겠어요."
As Fred walked out,he said,"Merry Christmas!"to poor Bob in his cold office.
-프레드는 밖으로 나가면서,그는 "메리 크리스마스!"라고 말했고,가난한 밥은 그의 추운 사무실 안에 있었다.
"Yes,a happy Christmas to you,too,"Bob answered warmly.
-"그래,너도 행복한 크리스마스 보내,"밥은 따뜻하게 대답했다.
Then he opened the door for Fred and watched him walking away into the fog.

"Two poor fools wishing each other a merry Christmas,"Scrooge said.

Just then two fat gentlemen wearing expensive clothes came into the office.
-그때 비싼 옷을 입은 뚱뚱한 두 신사가 사무실로 왔다.
"Excuse us,is this 'Scrooge and Marley`s office'?"
-"실례지만,여기가 '스크루지와 말리의 사무실'입니까?"
"Yes,it is,"answered Scrooge,again looking angry about an interruption.
-"네,맞습니다,"스크루지는 대답하고,다시 방해한 것이 화가난 듯 바라보았다.
"May I ask,are you Mr.Scrooge or Mr.Marley?"
-"혹시,당신이 스크루지씨나 말리씨 입니까?"
"Mr.Marley is dead.He died on Christmas Eve seven years ago,in 1836."
-"말리씨는 죽었어요.1836년인 7년 전,크리스마스 이브에 말이죠."
"Oh,I`m sorry,"said the same man.
-"오,유감이군요,"남자는 똑같이 말했다.
"But we are here,at this blessed time of year,to ask if you would like to give some money to the poor.So many people have nothing to eat."
-"하지만 우리는 이곳에서,매년 기도를 하고,가난한 사람들에게 돈을 나눠주죠.많은 사람들은 아무것도 먹지 못하고 있죠."

- "Aren`t there any prisons?"asked Scrooge.

"Or any orphanages?"

"Well,yes,sir,there are still many prisons and orphanages."
-"당연히,당신은 그렇겠죠,그러나 감옥이나 고아원이 아니라도 많은 사람들은 그러고 있어요."
"What about poorhouses for the poor?"Scrooge said with a mean look.
-"뭐 가난한 사람들만 있는 구빈원 같은 곳 도요??"스크루지는 의미있는 눈빛으로 말했다.
"It`s sad,but there are still many poorhouses,orphanages,and prisons,"said the same man.
-"슬프지만,아직 구빈원,고아원,그리고 감옥에 있는 많은 사람들은 그러고 있어요,"남자가 말했다.
"But many people can`t go there.They are cold and have little to eat.Could you please help them by donating some money?"
-"하지만 많은 사람들은 그곳에 가지 않아요.그들은 춥고 먹을 것을 조금도 가지고 있지 않아요.당신은 그들에게 적은 돈이라도 기부하지 않으시겠어요?"
"No,I will give no money to people who are too lazy to work."said Scrooge.
-"싫어요,난 열심히 일을 해서 번 돈을 모르는 사람에게 성의없이 쓰고 싶지 않거든요."스크루지가 말했다.
"But sir,some of them could die.Won`t you help them?"
-"하지만 선생님,그 조금의 돈이 없어서 그들이 죽을 수도 있어요.그런데도 그들을 도와주지 않을건가요?"
"I do help them.They already get too much money from me and my taxes.Besides,there are too many people in the world now.A few lazy fools dying is a good thing!"
-"난 그들을 돕지 않을거예요.그들은 이미 나에게 너무 많은 세금을 가져갔으니까요.그것에 비해,세계에서 너무 많은 사람들이 살고 있고요.조금이라도 게으른 바보들은 좋은 일을 한다고 하며 죽어가고 있다고요!"
The two men could tell Scrooge would never give them anyting.
-두 남자는 스크루지의 말에 아무것도 받지 못하고 가야만 했다.
They gave Bob a sorrowful look.
-그들은 밥을 슬프게 쳐다보았다.
"Now get back to work and no more interruptions!"Scrooge shouted at his clerk.
-"난 지금 다시 일을 할 거니까 더 이상 방해하지마!"스크루지는 그의 사무원에게 말했다.
The afternoon slowly bacame night.
-오후가 서서히 지나서 밤이 되었다.
It was time to go home.
-집에 갈 시간이 되었다.
"I guess you want the whole day tomorrow,"Scrooge said angrily to his clerk.
-"넌 내일 종일 일을 하면 좋겠군,"스크루지는 그의 사무원에게 화가난 듯 말했다.
"You want to sit at home all day and still get paid?"
-"넌 집에서 하루종일 앉아 있으면서 아직도 월급을 받을 생각인가?"
"Well,yes,sir,if it isn`t a bother.It is Christmas."
-"글쎄요,선생님,만약 귀찮으면 안하고요.크리스마스니까요."
Bob was worried about not being able to be with his family.
-밥은 잘 해주지 못하고 있는 그의 가족이 걱정 되었다.
"Bah,humbug!It is a bother.Every year on December 25th,you don`t work,but I have to pay you.It`s money for nothing!"
-"쳇,다 사기라고!그냥 귀찮은 거잖아.매년 12월 25일에는,넌 일을 하지 않지만,난 너에게 돈을 주고 있어.이제는 돈을 주지 않을거야!"
Bob just looked down,holding his hat tightly in his hands.
-밥은 밑을 보았고,그의 모자를 두 손으로 꽉 쥐었다.
"All right,I have no choice.But be here early on the 26th."
-"알았어,난 선택권을 가질 수 없었지.하지만 26일에 일찍 나오도록 해."
"Yes,sir.Thank you,sir."
-"알았어요,선생님.고맙습니다,선생님."
Bob left quickly before Scrooge could change his mind.
-밥은 빠르게 나가면서 스크루지에 대한 생각을 바꾸었다.
Once he was outside,he forget all about the work-it was Christmas Eve.He was happy to be going home to his family.
-그가 밖으로 나감과 동시에 그는 일에 대한 모든 것을 잊었다.-그때는 크리스마스 이브였다.그는 행복하게 집으로 가서 가족을 만났다.

Marley`s Ghost
-말리의 유령
Bob went home to see his family;Scrooge went back to his empty house.
-밥이 그의 가족을 만나러 가고 있을 때;스크루지는 그의 비어있는 집으로 돌아갔다.
The house was cold and dark.
-그 집은 춥고 어두웠다.
For some people the darkness was scary,but Scrooge liked it-it was cheap.
-일부 사람들은 어두운 곳을 무서워하지만,스크루지는 그것을 좋아한다-그것은 돈이 들지 않기 때문이다.
That night when he got home,however,the house seemed strange.
-그는 밤에 집을 보았지만,아무리 보아도,무언가가 이상했다.
Maybe it was because it was Marley`s house and he had died exactly seven years ago this very day.
-그곳은 말리의 집이었고 그 날이 그가 죽은지 7년이 지난 날 이었기 때문이었을 것이다.
Maybe it was just because the heavy fog made it darker then normal.
-그렇기 때문에 평소에 있던 어둠이 농무를 만드는 것 같았다.
It seemed like there was someone or something else in the house.
-그때 집에서 또 다른 어떤 사람처럼 생긴 무언가를 보았다.
Scrooge lit a candle and looked around the room.
-스크루지는 양초에 불을 밝혀서 방의 주위를 보았다.
"Bah,humbug,"he said,"no one is here."
-"쳇,가짜였군,"그는 "여기에는 아무도 없잖아."라고 말했다.
Still,he carefully locked the door and then made a little fire in the fireplace.
-그럼에도 불구하고,그는 조심스럽게 문을 잠궜고 벽난로에 조금 불을 지폈다.
As the fire started to burn,Scrooge thought he heard something in the house.
-불이 밝혀지기 시작했고,스크루지는 그가 집에서 무슨 소리가 들린다고 생각했다.
He looked around again,but it was just the ticking of the clock.

In the quiet,Scrooge could hear something else.

It was far away,but it was coming closer.

It sounded like chains being dragged across the floor above.

Scrooge nervously shook his head.

"This can`t be happening.I must be dreaming."he thought to himself.
-"이건 있을 수 없는 일이야.난 지금 꿈을 꾸고 있는 거라고."그는 그 스스로 생각했다.
Just then the doorbell begen to ring loudly.
-그때 초인종이 소란스럽게 울리기 시작했다.
Scrooge wasn`t dreaming.
-스크루지는 꿈이 아니라고 생각했다.
Slowly,something came into the room.
-천천히,방으로 무언가가 오기 시작했다.
It wore Marley`s old clothes,while its whole body was wrapped in a chain.
-그때 말리가 낡은 옷을 입고,온 몸에 쇠사슬을 두르고 나타났다.
Many familiar things were attached to the chain-the account books,heavy cashboxes,keys and locks.
-친근한 여러 물건들을 쇠사슬에 달고 있었다-회계장부,무거운 금고,열쇠와 자물쇠였다.
But the most familiar thing of all was the face.
-하지만 그 친근한 물건을 가지고 있는 사람의 얼굴 또한 친근했다.
The face!
-그 얼굴은!
He recognized it right away as Marley`s.
-그는 똑바로 말리의 얼굴을 알아보았다.
"Who are you?"asked Scrooge.
-"누구야?"스크루지는 물었다.
"Ask not who I am,ask who I was."
-"내가 누구인지 묻지 말고,내가 누구였는지 물어봐."
"Who were you?"Scrooge cried out.
-"누구였어?"스크루지는 외쳤다.
"What do you want from me?"
-"나에게 무엇을 바라는 거야?"
"You know who I am.I can see it in your eyes."
-"난 네가 누구인지 알고 있어.난 너의 눈동자 속을 볼 수 있으니까 말이야."
"It can`t be you.That`s impossible,"Scrooge said.

The ghost shouted in anger.

- The sudden loud noise scared Scrooge.

He didn`t want to believe it,but looking into those cold eyes frightened him.

He didn`t know how or why,but he knew it was Marley.
-그는 어떻게 그리고 왜 이런 것인지 알지 못했지만,말리라는 사실만은 알고 있었다.
Scrooge began to be very afraid.
-스크루지는 두려워하기 시작했다.
"Yes,I know it is you,Jacob.Why are you here?What do you want?"
-"맞아,난 너를 알고 있어,야곱.넌 왜 여기에 온거야?넌 무엇을 바라고 있는 거야?"
Scrooge`s voice trembled as he spoke.
-스크루지는 떨리는 목소리로 말하였다.
His heart grew cold with fear.
-그의 심장은 차가움과 공포심이 커지고 있었다.
"If a man stays away from other people while he is alive,that man becomes like me,"the ghost answared shaking its chain sadly.

"Though I am dead,I must walk through the world of the living.I can see people laugh,but I cannot laugh with them.Happiness,sadness,joy-I can see them all,but none of them are for me."

"But why are you here,before me?"Scrooge`s voice shook as he spoke.

"But what can I do,Jacob?Please,tell me what I can do,"Scrooge was now begging for help.

"I cannot stay,Scrooge.I must be going,with no rest,no peace,"the ghost said as he began to float away.

"But wait,please!Tell me what I must do."

"Before I go,I will tell you one thing.That is why I came tonight,Scrooge,"the ghost said.

"You will be visited by three ghosts.The first will come tonight at one o`clock.The second will visit tomorrow night at the same time.And the third will come the night after that."

The ghost began floating out the window.

"But wait,will I see you again?Can`t you tell me more?"Scrooge cried as he ran toward the window.

With that the ghost disappeared into the dark night.

As Scrooge came to the window to see where Marley had gone,he suddenly heard some crying down below.

Again Scrooge`s heart froze.

The voices came not from people,but from ghost.

The ghost led him to the window and then started to pull him out.

"It`s,it`s me,"Scrooge said.

"Once,when I was a boy,I was left alone here on Christmas.My father and mother weren`t at home.Now,suddenly,I wish I had..."Scrooge`s voice grew quiet.

The ghost smiled.

They were back in the school.

This time young Scrooge was a little bigger.

The school seemed even older and darker than before.

The one thing that had remained the same was Scrooge sitting all alone at a desk.

Just then the door opened and a young girl ran in.

"Ebenezer,it`s me,your sister Fran!"said the girl as she ran up to Scrooge and hugged him.

"Father is kinder now.He has changed his mind.He wants you to come home."

As the old Scrooge watched the scene,another tear ran down his cheek.

He remembered seeing Fred earlier that day and refusing his invitation to dinner.

The ghost grabbed Scrooge`s hand,and they were gone.

Soon they were at Bob Cratchit,his clerk`s house.

Mrs.Cratchit was setting the table for Christmas dinner with her daughters.

The family all sat down for their dinner as Scrooge and the ghost watched.

Scrooge looked very sad when he heard these words.

"Didn`t you say there were too many people in the world?Isn`t Tiny Tim dying a good thing for you?"

Scrooge remembered what he had told the two gentlemen in his office.

He felt ashamed.

Just then he heard Bob saying his name.

The ghost led him down the street.

- Next they started a game.

The game was called 'Twenty Questions.' Each person had to think of something,while the others asked them questions.

They tried to guess what the person was thinking.
-그들은 다른 사람들의 생각을 맞추려고 열심히 추측하였다.
When it was Fred`s turn,everyone asked him questions.
-드디어 프레드의 차례가 되었고,모든 사람들은 그에게 질문을 하였다.
"Is it an animal?"one guest asked.

"Yes,"the nephew answered.

"Does it live in the city?"another asked.

The other guests asked questions and learned the animal wasn`t a dog or a cat,and taht people didn`t eat the animal.

The animal could talk.
-그 동물이 무엇을 할 수 있는지 말을 하였다.
Finally it was Fred`s wife`s turn to ask a question.
-마지막으로 프레드의 아내가 질문을 하였다.
"Does anyone like it?"she asked.
-"그것을 누구나 좋아하나요?"그녀는 물었다.
"No,"the nephew answered sadly.
-"아니요,"조카는 슬픈 듯 대답했다.
"I know what it is,"the wife answered.

"If it is an animal nobody likes,it must be your Uncle Scrooge!"

And she was right.

"But I still hope the old man has a merry Christmas and a happy New Year,"Fred said,feeling a little bad about his game.

The ghost pointed to two children.

They were very thin and shook from the cold weather.

When Scrooge looked at their eyes,he could see they were sad and very hungry.

Scrooge saw the next ghost coming toward him.

Unlike the others,Scrooge couldn`t see this one`s face or body.
-다른 유령과 달리,스크루지는 그 유령의 얼굴과 몸을 볼 수 없었다.
He could only see that it was very tall.

It wore long black clothes with a black hood.
-그 유령은 검은색 옷에 검은색 모자를 걸치고 있었다.
"Are you the Ghost of Christmas Future?"Scrooge asked,his voice shaking slightly.

The ghost didn`t answer.

A long,white hand came out of the clothes and signaled yes.

Soon they were in the center of the city.

The first place they went was popular among businessmen.

They walked around in expensive suits with their hands in their pockets.

Scrooge could hear some of them talking.

"All I know,"said the fattest businessman,"is that he died on Christmas Eve."

The people were very different from the well dressed businessmen Scrooge had just seen.

They went into one of the small,dirty shops.

The shop had many old things;old clothes,old keys and chains,old plates and old dishes.

Scrooge realized it was a place people came to sell their things when they needed money.

- The owner,Joe,sat smoking behind a dirty desk.

An old woman was standing in front of him holding onto a big box.

"Give me some money,Joe.I brought you some good things this time."

Joe opened the box and looked inside.

"Bed-curtains?"Joe said with a surprised voice.

"You took them from his bed-the bed he died in?"

"Sure,why not?He doesn`t need them anymore,"the old woman answered.

"I`ve also got the expensive shirt the body wore at his funeral."

Just then another woman walked into the shop carrying even more things.

She had been the old man`s housekeeper.

"Hurry,Joe,and look in my bag.Tell me how much money you can give me for these things,"the housekeeper said greedily.

He checked every item very carefully.

Finally he took two pieces of paper and wrote down some numbers.

He gave one paper to each woman and told them,"This is how much I`ll give you.This is all I will give,nothing more."

It wasn`t a lot of money,but it was certainly more than their old boss had given the women for their hard work.

"It`s funny,"Joe said.

And each woman gave a cold,mean laugh.

Scrooge stood before a bed with no blankets or curtains.

The bed only had a thin sheet.

Scrooge could see the body of a dead man under the sheet.
-스크루지는 죽은 남자의 몸의 밑에 있는 시트를 볼 수 있었다.
The ghost pointed for Scrooge to look at the man`s face.
-유령은 스크루지에게 남자의 얼굴을 가리켰다.
"No,ghost,I cannot look,"Scrooge said.

His voice was shaking with fear.

"It is so sad.This old man died all alone with no one love him or remember him kindly.He didn`t care about people,only money.I will never forget this scene.It is so terrible.Can we please go now?"

He looked older and very tired.

This time there was no Tiny Tim with him.

The family came up to him,and he started to cry.

Scrooge fell on his knees.

The ghost said nothing.

But the ghost was gone.

Scrooge was back lying under his blankets in his bed.

Scrooge was very happy to be alive and even happier to have time to change his future.

"What can I do first?"he thought to himself.

He opened the window.

The boy looked surprised.

All of the visits from the ghosts had taken place in one night.

He called back to the boy,"Young man,do you know the butcher`s shop down the street?"

"Please go and tell the butcher I will buy it.If you come back quickly,I`ll give you a nice tip."

"I`ll send the big goose to the Cratchit family,"he thought to himself.
-"난 커다란 거위를 크래치트 가족에게 주었으면 좋겠어,"그는 혼자서 생각했다.
Soon the butcher and the boy were at Scrooge`s door.
-곧 정육점 주인과 소년이 스크루지의 문 앞에 왔다.
The butcher carried the huge goose.
-정육점 주인은 거위를 꼭 끌어안아서 들고 있었다.
Scrooge gave the boy a nice tip and wished him "Merry Christmas."
-스크루지는 소년에게 많은 사례금을 주고 그에게 "메리 크리스마스."라고 말했다.
Then he paid for the goose,the cab fare to Cratchit`s house,and then gave the butcher a tip.

- Scrooge put on his best clothes and walked outside.

Seeing a happy gentleman,people wished him "Good morning" and "Merry Christmas."

"Yes,that`s right.I`m very sorry for yesterday,"Scrooge said.

"I just wanted to apologize and,"then Scrooge wishpered into the man`s ear.
-"전 정말 사과하고 싶었고,"그 후 스크루지는 남자들의 귀에 속삭였다.
"Really?"
-"정말요?"
The man was surprised.
-남자는 놀랐다.
"That`s very generous of you!We will be able to help many,many people with that much money."
-"당신은 정말 인심이 후한 사람이군요!우리는 분명 그 돈으로 수 많은 사람들을 도와줄 수 있을 겁니다."
"Well,just stop by my office tomorrow and I`ll give you the money,"Scrooge said.
-"그럼,내일 저의 사무실에서 일을 마치고 돈을 드리겠습니다,"스크루지는 말했다.
"And have a merry Christmas."
-"그리고 즐거운 크리스마스 보내십시오."
Then he started walking again.

He kept going until he reached his nephew`s house later that afternoon.

He was very nervous when he knocked on his nephew`s door.

Scrooge sat down and enjoyed one of the happiest Christmas of his life.

Everyone had a good time talking to the kind,friendly new Scrooge.

When he left,they thanked him many times for coming and wished him,"Happy New Year."

Scrooge was happy to hear that.

Once when I was six I saw a magnificent picture in a book about the jungle,called True Stories.

It showed a boa constrictor swallowing a wild beast.
-그것은 보아뱀이 맹수를 집어 삼키고 있는 모습이었다.
Here is a copy of the picture.
-이것은 그 그림을 옮겨놓은 것이다.
In the book it said:"Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole,without chewing.Afterward they are no longer able to move,and they sleep for six months they need for digestion."
-책에는 "보아뱀은 먹이를 씹지 않고,통째로 집어 삼킨다.그 후 그들은 꼼짝도 하지 못하고,그것을 약 6개월 동안 잠을 자며 소화 시킨다."라고 적혀 있었다.
In those days I thought a lot about jungle adventures,and eventually managed to make my first drawing,with a colored pencil.
-그 무렵 난 밀림 속에서의 모헙에 대해서 생각했고,결국 색연필로 내 나름대로 내 생애 첫 번째 그림을 그리게 되었다.
My drawing Number One looked like this:
-나의 그림 제 1호는 바로 이것이었다.
I showed the grown ups my masterpiece,and I asked them if my drawing scared them.
-나는 그 걸작품을 어른들에게 보여주면서,무섭지 않느냐고 물어보았다.
They answered,"Why should anyone be scared of a hat?"
-그들은 "모자가 뭐가 무섭다는 거니?"라고 대답했다.
My drawing was not a picture of a hat.
-나의 그림은 모자를 그린 것이 아니었다.
It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.
-그것은 코끼리를 소화시키고 있는 보아뱀이었다.
Then I drew the inside of the boa constrictor,so the grown ups could understand.
-그래서 난 어른들이 그것을 알아볼 수 있도록,보아뱀의 속을 그렸다.
They always need explanations.
-어른들은 언제나 설명을 필요로한다.
My drawing Number Two looked like this:
-나의 그림 제 2호는 이러했다.
The grown ups advised me to put away my drawings of boa constrictors,outside or inside,and apply myself instead to geography,history,arithmetic,and grammer.
-어른들은 속이 보이거나 보이지 않은 보아뱀의 그림보다는 차라리 지리,역사,계산,그리고 문법에 관심을 가지라고 충고해 주었다.
That is why I gave up,at the age of six,a magnificent career as an artist.
-그렇게 난 여섯 살 적에 화가라는 멋진 직업을 포기해 버렸다.
I had been discouraged by the failure of my drawing Number One and of my drawing Number Two.
-내 그림 제 1호와 제2호가 성공을 거두지 못한 데 낙심해 버렸던 것이다.
Grown ups never understand anything by them selves,and it is exhausting for children to have to explain over and over again.
-어른들은 언제나 스스로는 아무것도 이해하지 못하고,자꾸 자꾸 설명해 주어야 하니 힘이들지 않을 수 없는 일이다.
So then I had to choose another career.
-난 다른 직업을 선택할 수 밖에 없었다.
I learned to pilot airplanes.
-난 비행기 조종하는 법을 배웠다.
I have flown almost everywhere in the world.
-세계의 여기저기 거의 안가본 데 없이 난 날아다녔다.
And,as a matter of fact,geography has been a big help to me.
-그러니 지리는 나에게 정말 많은 도움을 준 셈이었다.
I could tell China from Arizona at first glance,which is very useful if you get lost during the night.
-나는 한 번 슬쩍 보고도 중국과 애리조나를 구분할 수 있었고,그것은 밤에 길을 잃었을 때 아주 유용한 일이었다.
So I have met,in the course of my life,lots of serious people.
-그렇게 나는 인생을 살면서,수 많은 점잖은 사람들과 접촉을 가져왔다.
I have spent lots of time with grown ups.
-어른들 틈에서 많이 살아온 것이다.
I have seen them at close range...which hasn`t improved my opinion of them.
-난 가까이서 그들을 볼 수 있었고...그렇다고 그들에 대한 나의 생각이 나아진 건 없었다.
Whenever I encountered a grown up who seemed to be intelligent,I would experiment on him with my drawing Number One,which I have always kept.
-난 언제나 조금 총명해 보이는 사람을 만날 때면,나는 늘 간직해 오고 있었던 나의 그림 제 1호를 보여주고,그 사람을 시험해 보고는 했다.
I wanted to see if he really understood anything.
-그 사람이 정말로 무엇을 이해할 줄 아는 사람인지 알고 싶었던 것이다.
But he would always answer,"That`s a hat."
-그러나 그 사람들은 언제나 "모자군."이라고 대답할 뿐이었다.
Then I wouldn`t talk about boa constrictors or jungles or stars.
-그러면 나는 그 사람들에게 보아뱀도 원시림도 별들에 대해서도 말하지 않았다.
I would put myself on his level and talk about bridge and golf and politics and neckties.
-내가 그의 수준에 맞춰서 브리지나 골프나 정치나 넥타이 같은 것들에 대해서 말을 해주었다.
And my grown up was glad to know such a reasonable person.

So I lived all alone,without anyone I could really talk to,until I had to make a crash landing in the Sahara Desert six years ago.
-그래서 나는 6년 전에 사라하 사막에서 비행기가 고장을 일으킬 때까지 마음을 털어놓고 진정어린 이야기를 할 수 있는 상대를 갖지 못한 채 홀로 살아왔다.
Something in my plane`s engine had broken.
-내 비행기의 모터가 한 군데 부서져 버렸다.
Since I had neither a mechanic nor passengers in the plane with me,I was preparing to undertake the difficult repair job by myself.
-그때는 기사도 승객도 없었으므로,나는 혼자서 어려운 수선을 시도해 보려고 채비를 갖추었다.
For me it was a matter of life or death.
-그것은 나에게는 사느냐 죽느냐의 문제였다.
I had only enough drinking water for eight days.
-난 8일 동안 마실 수 있는 물 밖에 남아 있지 않았다.
The first night,then,I went to sleep on the sand a thousand miles from any inhabited country.
-첫 날밤,난 사람들이 사는 마을에서 수 천 마일 떨어진 곳에서 잠이 들었다.
I was more isolated than a man shipwrecked on a raft in the middle of the ocean.
-대양 한가운데에서 떠 있는 뗏목 위의 표류자보다 나는 더 고립되어 있었다.
So you can imagine my surprise when I was awakened at daybreak by a funny little voice saying,"Please...draw me a sheep..."
-그러니 해가 뜰 무렵에 "제발...나에게 양 한 마리를 그려줘..."라고 말하는 어린 목소리가 나를 깨웠을 때 내가 얼마나 놀랐을지 여러분은 상상할 수 있을 것이다.
"What?"
-"뭐라고?"
"Draw me a sheep..."
-"양 한마리를 그려줘..."
I leaped up as if I had been struck by lightning.
-나는 기겁을 해서 후다닥 일어섰다.
I rubbed my eyes hard.
-난 눈을 마구 비벼 보았다.
I stared.
-사방을 잘 살펴보았다.
And I saw an extraordinary little fellow staring back at me very seriously.
-그랬더니 난 정말 이상하게 생긴 조그마한 사내 아이가 나를 매우 심각하게 바라보고 있는 것을 보았다.
Here is the best portrait I managed to make of him,later on.
-이것이 훗날 내가 그를 그린 그림 중에서 가장 잘된 것이다.
But of course my drawing is much less attractive than my model.
-그러나 물론 나의 그림은 모델보다는 훨씬 덜 매력적이다.
This is not my fault.
-이것은 내 잘못이 아니다.
My career as a painter was discouraged at the age of six by the grown ups,and I had never learned to draw any thing except boa constrictor,outside and inside.

So I stared wide eyed at this apparition.

Don`t forget that I was a thousand miles from any inhabited territory.

Yet this little fellow seemed to be neither lost nor dying of exhaustion,hunger,or thirst;nor did he seem scared to death.
-그런데 그 아이는 길을 잃은 것 같지도 않아 보였고,피곤과,배고픔과,목마름과 두려움에 시달리는 것 같아 보이지도 않았다;그는 죽음을 두려워하는 것 처럼 보이지 않았다.
There was nothing in his appearance that suggested a child lost in the middle of the desert a thousand miles from any inhabited territory.

- When I finally managed to speak,I asked him,"But...What are you doing here?"

And then he repeated,very slowly and very seriously,"Please...draw me a sheep..."
-그러자 그는 아주 심각한 이야기나 되는 듯이 소곤 소곤 다시 "부탁이야...양 한 마리를 그려줘..."라고 말했다.
When you encounter an overpowering mystery,you don`t dare disobey.
-누구나 아주 인상깊은 신비스러운 일을 당하면 거기에 순순히 따르기 마련이다.
Absurd as it seemed,a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and in danger of death,I took a piece of paper and a pen out of my pocket.
-사람이 사는 고장에서 수 천 마일 떨어진 곳에서 죽음의 위허을 마주하고 있는 중에 참 엉뚱한 짓이라고 느껴지기는 했지만,나는 포켓에서 종이 한 장과 펜을 꺼냈다.
But then I remembered that I had mostly studied geography,history,arithmetic,and grammer,and I told the little fellow (rather crossly)that I don`t know how to draw.
-그러나 내가 공부한 것은 지리,역사,계산,문법이라는 사실이 생각이 나서 그 어린 소년에게,나는 그림을 그릴 줄 모른다고(조금 기분이 나빠져서)말했다.
He replied,"That doesn`t matter.Draw me a sheep."
-그는 "괜찮아.나에게 양 한 마리를 그려줘."라고 대답했다.
Since I had never drawn a sheep,I made him one of the only two drawings I knew how to make-the one of the boa constrictor from outside.
-난 양을 한 번도 그려본 적이 없었으므로 그를 위해 내가 그릴 수 있는 단 두 가지 그림 중의 하나를 다시 그려 주었다-그것은 속이 보이지 않는 보아뱀이었다.
And I was astounded to hear the little fellow answer:"No!No!I don`t want an elephant inside a boa constrictor.A boa constrictor is very dangerous,and an elephant would get in the way.Where I live,everything is very small.I need a sheep.Draw me a sheep."
-그러자 그 어린 소년은 "아니야!아니야!난 보아뱀 속의 코끼리는 싫어.보아뱀은 아주 위험하고,코끼리는 매우 거추장스러워.내가 사는 곳은 아주 조그맣단 말이야.내게는 양이 필요해.양을 그려 달란 말이야."라고 말하는 것이었다.
So then I made a drawing.
-그래서 나는 양을 그렸다.
He looked at it carefully,and then said,"No.This one is already quite sick.Make another."
-그는 주의 깊게 바라보더니 "안돼.그 양은 벌써 병이 들었는 걸.다시 하나 그려줘."라고 말했다.
I made another drawing.
-나는 또 그렸다.
My friend gave me kind,indulgent smile:"You can see for yourself...that`s not a sheep,it`s a ram.It has horns..."
-내 친구는 너그러운 모습으로 미소를 지으며 "네가 이걸 한 번 봐...이건 양이 아니라 염소잖아.뿔이 있으니까..."라고 말했다.
So I made my third drawing,but it was rejected,like the others:"This one`s too old.I want a sheep that will live a long time."
-난 또 다시 그림을 그렸지만,그는 "그건 너무 늙었어.난 오래 살 수 있는 양을 갖고 싶어."라고 말하며 앞의 것들과 마찬가지로 거절하였다.
So then,impatiently,since I was in a hurry to start work on my engine,I scribbled this drawing,and added,"This is just the crate.The sheep you want in inside."
-나는 모터 분해를 서둘러야 했으므로,더 이상 참지 못하고 여기 있는 이 그림을 되는 대로 그려 놓고는 그에게 "이건 상자야.네가 원하는 양은 그 안에 있어."라고 한 마디 툭 던졌다.
But I was amazed to see my young critic`s face light up.
-그러자 나의 어린 심판관의 얼굴이 환히 밝아지는 것을 보고 나는 놀라지 않을 수 없었다.
"That`s just the kind I wanted!Do you think this sheep will need a lot of grass?"
-"이게 바로 내가 원하던 거야!이 양에게 풀을 많이 주어야 해?"
"Why?"
-"왜 그런 걸 묻지?"
"Because where I live,everything is very small..."
-"왜냐하면 내가 사는 곳은 아주 작거든..."
"There`s sure to be enough.I`ve given you a very small sheep."
-"거기 있는 걸로 아마 충분할거야.너에게 준건 아주 조그마한 양이니까."
He bent over the drawing.
-그는 고개를 숙여 그림을 들여다 보았다.
"Not so small as all that...Look!He`s gone to sleep..."
-"그다지 작지도 않은 걸...봐!그가 곤히 잠들었네..."
And that`s how I made the acquaintance of the little prince.
-이렇게 해서 나는 어린 왕자를 알게 되었다.
