There came a time when the Israelites moved to Egypt to find food.
-이스라엘 사람들은 때가 되면 식량을 구하러 이집트로 떠나곤 했다.
Eventually they became the slaves of Pharaoh.
-최후에 그들은 파라오의 노예가 되기도 했다.
Pharaoh was worried became they continued to grow in number.

So he told his soldiers to kill all the Jewish male bebies.
-그는 군사들에게 유대인의 남자 아이들은 죽이라고 명령했다.
Moses was born at this time to an Israelite woman in Egypt.
-모세라는 아이가 이집트에 있는 이스라엘 여성으로부터 태어났다.
She did not want him to be killed.

She placed Moses in a basket and then put the basket in the river Nile.

An Egyptian princess found Moses and raised the baby herself.

When Moses came closer,he heard a voice.

"I am the God of the Israelites,"said the voice.

Moses was afraid,but he believed in God.

Finally God killed all the first born Egyptians.

Then Pharaoh told Moses to take his people and go from Egypt.

After they left,Pharaoh changed his mind.

He gathered a small army and chased after Moses and his people.

At the shore of the Red Sea,the Egyptian army had almost caught up with them.

He raised his rod.

Suddenly the waters of the Red Sea split into two.
-갑자기 홍해가 두 개로 나뉘어졌다.
Dry land appeared between two walls of water.
-나눠진 물이 벽처럼 보였고 그 사이로 마른 땅이 보였다.
The Israelites ran forward.
-이스라엘 사람들은 앞쪽으로 뛰었다.
When Pharaoh came to the Red Sea,the Israelites were already on the other side.
-그때 파라오는 홍해로 오고 있었고,이스라엘 사람들은 이미 다른 곳으로 떠나고 있었다.
"Forward!"cried Pharaoh.
-"돌격하라!"파라오는 소리쳤다.
Then God released the waters.
-신은 다시 물을 합쳤다.
They rushed back together and covered the Egyptian army.

Pharaoh and all his soldiers died.

The Israelites were safe and free.

In the desert,the Israelites camped near Mount Sinai.

Moses told the people to wait.

Samson

Samson was the king of Israel for twenty years.

He killed many Philistines,the enemies of Israel.

Samson fell in love with a beautiful woman named Delilah.

When the Philistine leaders heard this,they made a plan.

The prison guards often brought Samson to the temple.

The Israelites and the Philistines began fighting again.

The strongest warrior of the Philistines was named Goliath.
-필리스티아에서는 골리앗이라는 힘 센 용사가 있었다.
He was almost ten feet tall!
-그는 키가 십피트나 되었다!
He was covered in heavy bronze armor.
-그는 무거운 청동 갑옷을 걸치고 있었다.
Goliath shouted at the Israelites who were on the other side of the valley.

"Soldiers of Israel!Send your best warrior to fight me!If he wins,we will be your slaves.But if I win,you will be our slaves!"

When the Israelites heard this,they were afraid.

Every day,Goliath shouted his challenge.

At this time,there was an Israeli teenager named David.

He was a shepherd,not a warrior.

David heard about Goliath,and decided to fight the warrior.

He thought to himself,"The Lord,our God protects me.He will protect me from this warrior."

He picked up five large,smooth stones and put them in his bag.

Then he walked toward the Philistine camp.

Goliath saw David coming and was angry.

King Solomon

When David died,his son,Solomon became King.

One day,two women came before Solomon.
-어느 날,두 명의 여자가 솔로몬을 찾아왔다.
They wanted him to solve their argument.
-그들은 그가 본인들의 다툼을 해결해주길 바라고 있었다.
One of them was carrying a baby.
-그들에게 한 명의 아기가 보내졌다.
The first woman said,"King Solomon,listen to our story.This woman and I both had bebies.One night,this woman`s baby died.She took her dead baby into my room.As I was sleeping,she took my baby!"

"Liar!"shouted the other woman.

King Solomon shouted,"Cut the baby into two with a sword.Then give one half to each woman.This way,they will both be satisfied."

"No!"cried the first woman.

The second woman cried out,"That is a good decision."

When King Solomon heard these words,he said to the first woman,"You must be the true mother of this baby.No mother would allow her baby to be killed."

When the people heard this judgment,they knew their king was wise and good.

Daniel was a Jewish prisoner taken from Jerusalem.

Persia had defeated Israel in war.

The Persian king wanted many young Jews to serve him.

Daniel was one of these young men.
-다니엘도 그 어린 남자들 중 한 명이었다.
When Daniel grew up,a new King took power in Persia.

His name was Darius.

King Darius really liked Daniel.

Daniel was now a very wise and good man.

So Darius made Daniel the most important official in Persia.

Many of the other Persian officials were jealous of Daniel.

They tried to think of some way to make Darius angry with Daniel.

But Daniel was a very honest man.

His enemies could not find any fault with Daniel.

But one day,a Persian official had an idea.

All the officials went to King Darius.

They told Darius that there was a lot of confusion in Persia.

"The people are asking many different gods many different things,"they said.

"You should make a new law.No one should be permitted to pray for the next thirty days."

"What will happen if a man is caught praying?"asked King Darius.

"Then he should be thrown into the cave where the lions are kept,"answered the officials.

King Darius signed the new law.

When Daniel heard about the new law,he was sad but he couldn`t stop praying.

He had only three rubles,but he also planned to visit some of his customers on the way.

They owed him five rubles for work he had already done.
-그들은 그에게 5루블밖에 주지 않고 일을 시킬 수 있는 신세를 지고 있었다.
Simon went to several customers` houses,but he could only collect about twenty kopeks.

When the shoemaker went to the store to buy a coat,he did not have enough money.

Simon felt frustrated.

He spent the twenty kopeks on vodka,and started walking home.

Even though it was getting dark now,the vodka kept him warm.

As Simon was walking,he came near a small church by the road.

He saw something white behind the church.

So Simon ran down the road,out of sight.

At the top of the next hill,he suddenly stopped.

"What am I doing?"Simon thought.

Simon turned around and went back to the church.

When Simon went behind the church,he saw a young man there.

This young man was tall and healthy,but he looked afraid.

He was very handsome,with a kind face.

Suddenly,Simon liked the young man.

Simon took off his old jacket and put it around the young man`s shoulders.

As Simon walked home with the stranger,he worried about his wife.

Martha became very angry.

"You are late coming home,so the food is not ready.Not only are you late,but you don`t have a coat.You spent all our money on vodka and you bring a strange man home.He doesn`t even have clothes of his own!I have no supper for drunks like you!"
-"당신이 집에 늦게 와서,음식을 빨리 차려 드릴 수 없어요.오직 늦어서 만은 아니지만,당신은 코트를 가져오지도 않았어요.당신은 보드카를 사며 우리의 돈을 다 써버렸고 낯선 남자를 집에 데려 왔어요.그는 본인의 옷 조차 걸치고 있지 않다구요!난 저녁 식사를 차릴 수 없으니 당신들끼리 알아서 하세요!"
"That`s enough,Martha,"said Simon.
-"그 정도로 충분해,마서,"사이먼은 말했다.
He tried to explain himself,but she was too angry.
-그는 어떻게 해서라도 설명을 하려고 했지만,그녀는 더 화가 날 뿐이었다.
"I should never have married you,"she said.
-"난 절대 당신과 결혼할 수 없었을 거예요,"그녀는 말했다.
"What are we going to do this winter without a coat?And all you can do is bring drunken strangers to eat what little food we have!"
-"우리가 어떻게 코트도 없이 이 겨울을 버틴단 말이예요?그리고 어떻게 술 취한 낯선 사람을 데리고 와선 저녁 식사를 차려 달라고 할 수 있냐구요!"
Then Martha looked at the stranger.

She said,"If he were a good man,he would not naked.And you would tell me where he came from!"

"That`s what I`m trying to tell you!"said Simon.

He then told his wife how he met the young man.

As Martha listened to her husband,she looked at the young man.

He sat on the edge of the bench without moving.

His hands were in his lap,and he looked down at the floor.

He looked very pitiful.

After Simon told his story,he said,"Martha,don`t you love God?"

When Martha heard these words,she had compassion for the stranger.

The stranger stayed and learned how to make shoes from Simon.

"It`s good leather,sir,"said Simon.

The gentleman laughed.

"It is the best,you fool.I want you to make me a pair of boots that will last for one year.Can you do it?"

Simon was afraid.

He looked at Michael and asked,"Should we take this work?"

Michael nodded his head.

He seemed to be looking behind the rich gentleman,but no one was there.

Simon said,"Hello,Ivan.I have lost everything and have returned home.Will you care for us until I can find some work?"

After finishing his mission,the first devil went to Ivan`s farm.

-그러나,그는 그의 형제를 찾지 않았다.
"Something must have happened to my brother.I will have to stop Ivan myself,"said the first devil,seeing the small hole in the ground.

The little devil flooded the meadow with water.

"Now let me go,"said the devil.

"Many soldiers need a lot of food.How do I turn them back to straw?"

Ivan returned home and was surprised to see his brother Tarras and his wife.

Tarras seemed embarrassed because he had lost all his money.

The devil who ruined Tarras came to Ivan`s farm.

He looked around for his brothers,but did not see them.

All he saw were two holes in the ground.

Before the devil could escape,the tree was cut in one blow.

The little devil fell down and Ivan found it.

"What`s this?"Ivan cried.
-"이게 뭐야?"아이반은 소리쳤다.
"I thought you went away!"
-"난 네가 저리로 간 것으로 생각하고 있었는데!"
"I am another one!"
-"난 그들과 달라요!"
"Well,"said Ivan.
-"그럼,"아이반이 말했다.
"It doesn`t matter.I will kill you with my axe."
-"넌 아무 행동도 할 수 없을거야.난 널 이 도끼로 죽일거니까."
"Please,do not kill me,"cried the devil.
-"제발 절 죽이지 마세요,"악마가 소리쳤다.
"I can create gold for you."
-"난 당신에게 금을 만들어 드릴 수 있어요."
"Show me how,"said Ivan.
-"어떤지 나한테 보여줘,"아이반이 말했다.
The devil told Ivan to gather leaves from a special oak tree.
-악마는 아이반에게 말한 후 참나무의 잎사귀를 모았다.
He showed Ivan how to rub the leaves in his hands.
-그는 그의 손에 있는 잎사귀를 비비며 아이반을 보았다.
When the divil said some magic words,the leaves changed to gold coins!
-악마는 마술 주문을 말했고,잎사귀는 금화로 바뀌었다!
"This is a great trick,"said Ivan.

"The village children will really like this."

"Now please let me go,"begged the devil.

"With God`s blessing,you may go,"said Ivan.

At the mention of the name of God,the devil disappeared into the earth.
-신이라고 말을 하니,악마는 땅에서 사라져 버렸다.
Ivan soon finished building the houses for his brothers to move into.
-아이반은 곧 그의 형제들이 옮겨 살 수 있는 집을 다 지었다.
When he completed his field work,he planned a big feast.
-그는 모든 일을 끝내고,들판에서 큰 축제를 벌일 계획을 세웠다.
He asked his brothers to come to a party,but they refused.
-그는 그의 형제들에게 파티에 올것을 권했지만,그들은 거절하였다.
Ivan had a party anyway,and invited all the villagers.
-아무튼 아이반은 파티를 하였고,마을 주민들을 초대하였다.
He decided to entertain them.

Ivan told the village girls to sing songs for him.

He said he would pay them well.

The girls sang and then asked him for some reward.

Ivan went into the forest while the girls laughed at him.

Soon Ivan came back with a large bag.
-곧 이어 아이반은 큰 가방을 들고 돌아왔다.
He pulled out many gold coins from the bag and threw them into the air.
-그는 가방에 있는 많은 금화들을 공중에 던졌다.
The villagers were very surprised.
-마을 사람들은 매우 놀랐다.
Then they started fighting for the coins on the ground.
-곧 이어 그들은 땅에 있는 동전을 줍기 위해 다투었다.
Now it was Ivan`s turn to laugh at them.

Still laughing,he told the children he would make some soldiers sing for them.

He went into the barn and came out with many soldiers.

These soldiers sang songs in beautiful voices.

The next morning,Simon was knocking on Ivan`s door.

-"동생아,군인들 좀 불러 주었으면 좋겠구나,"사이먼은 부탁했다.
"I will show you,"said Ivan.
-"그렇게 해줄게,"아이반은 말했다.
He took Simon into the barn and made some soldiers from straw.
-그는 사이먼을 헛간으로 데리고 갔고 짚으로 군인들을 만들었다.
"This is amazing!"said Simon.
-"정말 놀라워!"사이먼은 말했다.
"With soldiers like these,I can defeat any kingdom!"
-"이 군인들 좀 봐,난 왕국을 무찌를 수 있다고!"
Ivan was greatly surprised.
-아이반은 크게 놀랐다.
"You should have me before.But you must promise to take them away from here.We do not have enough food to feed them."
-"형의 부탁을 들어줄게.하지만 형은 이 약속을 꼭 지켜야해.우리는 그들에게 충분한 음식을 줄 수 없다는 거야."
Simon promised,and Ivan made him a huge army.
-사이먼은 약속하고,아이반은 많은 군인을 만들었다.
Finally,Simon cried,"Enough,enough.Thank you,Ivan!"
-마침내,사이먼은 "충분해,충분하다고.고마워,아이반!"
Ivan replied,"It was no trouble.If you want more,just come back."

Then Simon left with his army to attack nearby kingdoms.

Ivan was very surprised.

"You should have told me this before.Just follow me."

Ivan made a big pile of gold,and asked Tarras if it was enough.
-아이반은 많은 금을 만들어 타라스의 부탁을 들어주었다.
"Thank you,Ivan,"said Tarras.
-"고마워,아이반,"타라스는 말했다.
"It will be enough for now."

Ivan replied,"If you want more,come back.It is no trouble at all."

Tarras took his gold and went away to start his business.

However,the brothers were not satisfied.

"I do not have enough money to care for my soldiers,"said Simon.

"And I do not have enough soldiers to guard my money,"said Tarras.

But Ivan refused.

"Simon,I did not know your soldiers would kill so many people.And Tarras,you have purchased all the cows in my village.The people cannot eat gold,so they have no food.I regret helping you before."
-"사이먼 형,난 형의 군인들이 많은 사람들을 죽일수도 있다고 생각해.그리고 타라스 형,마을에 있는 나의 모든 소들을 사는 건 어때.사람들이 돈이 없어서 아무것도 못 먹고 있기 때문에,음식을 줘야 하거든.난 지금 형들을 도와준 걸 후회하고 있어."
The brothers left Ivan,and made new plans.
-형들은 아이반으로 부터 떠났고,새로운 계획을 세웠다.
"If I give you some soldiers,then you can give me some money,"said Simon.
-"만약 내가 너에게 군인들을 준다면,넌 나에게 돈을 줘,"사이먼이 말했다.
Tarras agreed,and both the brothers became leaders.

Meanwhile,Ivan became popular because of his talents and good nature.

The people in his kingdom chose him as their ruler.

The old Devil never heard from his little devils,so he came up to look around.

Simon could do nothing about it,and he lost the war.

All of Simon`s soldiers died,and Simon had to run away,again.

Next,the Devil went to Tarras`s kingdom.

He pretended to be a very rich merchant.

Soon all the people wanted to sell their goods to the Devil.

At first,Tarras was happy because he made money from the taxes.

But when Tarras tried to buy something,he couldn`t.

"If we become soldiers,we will die fighting anyway,"replied the young men.

"Soldiers may or may not be killed,"said the Devil angrily.

The young men went to Ivan.

The Devil told this king that Ivan`s land would be easy to take.

The Tarkanian king decided to attack.
-타르카니아의 왕은 습격하기로 결심했다.
But when the soldiers arrived in Ivan`s kingdom,nobody fought them.
-하지만 군인들이 아이반의 나라에 도착했을 때,그들과 싸우려는 사람은 아무도 없었다.
Instead,Ivan`s people offered them food and drinks.
-대신에,아이반의 사람들은 그들에게 음식과 음료수를 제공해 주었다.
The soldiers told their king,"We will not fight for you anymore.The people here are very friendly and peaceful.We want to live with them."

The people were amazed to see shiny gold coins.

They started to build a house for the Devil.
-그들은 악마의 집을 짓기 시작했다.
The farmers traded food for gold.
-농부들은 음식과 금을 거래하기도 하였다.
The people used the gold to make jewelry for the women and toys for the children.
-금화로 여자들은 보석을 만들고 아이들은 장난감을 구입하는데 사용했다.
However,they soon had alll the gold they wanted.
-아무리 그래도,그들은 곧 금을 탐냈다.
Suddenly,the people stopped dealing with the nobleman.
-갑자기,사람들은 귀족과의 거래를 멈췄다.
The Devil was confused.
-악마는 당황했다.
He went to many houses,offering gold for food.
-그는 많은 집에 갔고,금과 음식을 제공해 주었다.
"If you offer us something else,we would trade,"they said.
-"만약 당신이 이것과 다른 무언가를 제공해 준다면,우리는 당신과 거래를 할 거예요,"그들은 말했다.
"Or if you ask us to help you in Christ`s name,we would give you something."
-"또는 당신이 예수의 이름으로 기도를 드린다면,우리는 무언가를 받겠어요."
But the Devil only had gold and just hearing Christ`s name wounded him.
