"Did you invite her into your house?"Ruth Rose asked.

Before he could answer,Dink blurted out,"Did she see your coin collection?"

Mr.Gwynn`s mouth dropped open.

"Are you suggesting...Oh,my,you could be right!"he said.

"The collection was in the living room where we sat and talked.Do you think she came back and stole it?"

Dink,Josh,and Ruth Rose looked at one another.

The kids thanked Mr.Gwynn,then raced all the way to the Pardues`house.

Out of breath,Ruth Rose rang the bell.
-잠시 후,루스 로즈는 초인종을 눌렀다.
Mrs.Pardue came to the door.
-팔듀 여사가 문으로 다가왔다.
"Hi,gang,what`s up?"she said.
-"안녕,얘들아,잘 지냈니?"그녀가 말했다.
Ruth Rose asked,"By any chance,did someone bring your rabbit back yesterday,before your house got robbed?"
-루스 로즈가 물었고,"혹시,어제 누군가가 유괴된 토끼를 다시 돌려 주지 않았나요?"
"Why,how did you know?"Mrs.Pardue asked.
-"그걸 어떻게 알았니?"팔듀 여사가 말했다.
"A nice young couple called and said they`d found Violet in their garden.They brought her home yesterday afternoon."
-"친절하고 젊은 커플이 전화를 해서 바이올릿을 그들의 정원에서 찾았다고 했어.어제 오후에 그녀를 집에 데리고 왔어."
Dink explained how the Gwynns` parrot had also been returned before they were robbed.
-딩크는 설명을 듣고 쥔씨의 앵무새를 훔친 사람이 돌려준 사람과 마찬가지로 같은 사람이라는 것을 알아차렸다.
Mrs.Pardue`s eyes got wide.
-팔듀 여사의 눈이 커졌다.
"Of course!That couple came in and had a cold drink with us.Dr.Pardue offered them a reward,but they refused it."
-"물론이지!그 커플이 왔을 때 음료수를 마셨어.팔듀 의사 선생님은 그들에게 보상금을 주려고 했지만,그들은 거절했어."

"Some of it was left to me by my grandmother."

Ruth Rose thought for a minute.

"Did they ask to use your bathroom?"
-"그들이 화장실을 사용해도 되냐고 물어보았나요?"
"Yes,the woman did,"Mrs.Pardue answered.
-"응,여자가 물었어,"팔듀 여사가 대답했다.
"She could have snooped in my bedroom at the same time.I feel so foolish!"
-"그녀가 나의 침실로 몰래 가서 훔쳤나봐.내가 너무 어리석었어!"
The kids said good-bye and headed for Main Street.
-아이들은 작별 인사를 하고 중심가로 갔다.
"I knew it!"Ruth Rose said.
-"나 알았어!"루스 로즈가 말했다.
"The pet nappers and the robbers are the same people!"
-"동물을 훔친 사람은 모두 같은 사람이야!"
"Boy,what a dirty scam,"Josh said.
-"야,정말 놀라운 정보야,"조시가 말했다.
"You steal someone`s pet,return it to get a guided tour of the place,then come back later to take what you liked."
-"너는 누군가가 동물을 훔치고,돌려준 후 잠시 여행을 갔다가,돌아온 것 처럼 했을 것이라고 생각하는구나."
"Talk about a double whammy,"Dink said,shaking his head.
-"두 배로 불행한 일이야,"딩크가 그의 머리를 흔들며,말했다.
"I think it`s gonna be a triple whammy,"Ruth Rose said.
-"난 세 배로 불행하다고 생각해,"루스 로즈가 말했다.
"What about Mrs.Davis?"

"They didn`t return Tiger,so they didn`t get inside my house.Come on,we have to tell Officer Fallon!"

They ran down Main Street to the police station.
-그들은 중심가에 있는 경찰서로 갔다.
"Does he work on Sunday morning?"Josh asked as they hurried up the steps.

"We`ll find out in a minute,"Dink said.

- The kids almost bumped into Officer Fallon coming through the door.
-아이들은 펄론 경찰관이 들어오는 문에 서있었다.
"Were you kids coming to see me?"he asked.
-"네들이 나를 보려고 왔구나?"그가 물었다.
"I was just heading for Ellie`s."
-"난 엘리라고 생각했어."
"Officer Fallon,we figured out the burglaries!"Ruth Rose cried.
-"펄론 경찰관님,우리가 도둑의 얼굴을 그렸어요!"루스 로즈가 소리쳤다.
He looked at her.
-그는 그녀를 쳐다보았다.
"Oh?Then we`d better go back inside."
-"오?그럼 안으로 들어오려무나."
Sitting at his desk,Officer Fallon picked up a pencil.
-그의 의자에 앉고,펄론 경찰관은 연필을 집었다.
"I`m listening,"he said.
-"내가 들어주마,"그는 말했다.
Ruth Rose told him their theory about how the pet nappers came back later to return the animals,then rob the houses.
-루스 로즈는 그에게 동물 도둑이 집에 들어가 동물을 훔치고,다시 돌아와 돌려준 것에 대한 추측을 말했다.
Officer Fallon smiled.
-펄론 경찰관은 웃었다.
"I think you`re right on the button,"he said.
-"난 너희가 올바른 판단을 했다고 생각해,"그는 말했다.
"I figured out the same thing."
-"내가 같은 것을 알아냈거든."
"Did you know that Mrs.Davis`s canary was returned,too?"Ruth Rose asked.
-"당신도 데이비스 여사의 카나리아 새가 돌아온 것을 알고 있나요?"루스 로즈가 물었다.
She looked at Dink and Josh.
-그녀는 딩크와 조시를 쳐다보았다.
"We think her house will be robbed next!"
-"그녀의 집에서 도둑질을 한 다음 날 돌려줬다고요!"
Officer Fallon raised his eyebrows.
-펄론 경찰관이 눈썹을 들어올렸다.
"Well,now,that is news.I didn`t know about the canary.When was it returned?"he asked,writing something on his pad.
-"글쎄,정말,새로운 소식이군.난 카나리아 새에 대해서는 잘 알지 못했어.언제 다시 돌려줬니?"그는 메모지에 무언가를 적으며,물어 보았다.
"Friday night,"Josh said.
-"금요일 밤이요,"조시가 말했다.
"Some guy called up and said he`d found Mozart.He brought him over while we were there."
-"남자가 모차르트를 찾았다고 전화를 했었다고해요.그는 그를 가져다 주고 잠시 머무르다가 갔어요."
Officer Fallon`s eyes widened.
-펄론 경찰관의 눈이 커졌다.
"Tell me about this man,Josh,"he said quietly.
-"그 남자에 대해서 말해줄래,조시,"그가 차분하게 말했다.
Josh described Fred Little while Officer Fallon took more notes.
-조시는 펄론 경찰관에게 프레드 리틀의 특징을 더 말해주었다.
"Can you arrest Fred Little before he breaks into Mrs.Davis`s house?"Ruth Rose asked.
-"그가 데이비스 여사의 집으로 가기 전에 체포할 수는 없나요?"루스 로즈가 물었다.
Officer Fallon tapped his pencil and squinted one eye at the kids.
-펄론 경찰관은 연필을 두드리면서 아이들에게 곁눈질을 하였다.
"Officer Keene and I have been looking for whoever returned the Gywnn and Pardue pets.We want to question them about the pet nappings and the robberies.Now we will start looking for Fred Little,too."
-"킨 경찰관하고 나하고 누구든 쥔씨와 팔듀씨의 동물을 훔친 사람을 꼭 찾겠어.우리는 그들에게 동물을 훔친 사람인지와 도둑질을 하였는지를 물어볼거야.지금 우리도 프레드 리틀을 찾을거야."
He leaned forward on his elbows.
-그는 팔꿈치를 앞으로 당겼다.
"But we have no evidence that these people have done anything wrong.The same goes for Fred Little.True,he returned the canary and got inside Leona Davis`s house.That`s the same pattern as the other two burglaries,but it`s not a crime."
-"하지만 그 사람들이 나쁜 짓을 한 증거가 없어.모든 사람이 프레드 리틀인지도 말이야.진짜,그가 카나리아 새를 돌려주고 레오나 데이비스씨의 집 안에 들어 갔는지도 말이야.같거나 다른 방법으로 도둑질을 했다 해도,범죄가 아닐수도 있어."
"You can`t arrest him?"Josh asked.
-"당신은 그를 체포할 수 없는 건가요?"조시가 물었다.
Officer Fallon shook his head.
-펄론 경찰관은 고개를 끄덕였다.
"Even if I knew where to find Fred Little,I have no proof that he`s planning a crime."
-"내가 프레드 리틀이 어디 있는지 알아내고 찾는다 해도,그 증거가 없기 때문에 범죄를 저질렀을거야."
"But we have to do something!"Ruth Rose said.
-"하지만 우리가 무얼 했는지 알잖아요!"루스 로즈가 말했다.
"You`ve already done a lot,"Officer Fallon said.
-"네들이 모든 일을 해결 해줘야겠어,"펄론 경찰관이 말했다.
"I didn`t know that Leona Davis got her bird back.You`ve given me a good lead.Officer Keene and I really appreciate your help,kids."
-"난 데이비스씨의 새가 돌아왔는지 몰랐어.네들이 알고있는 곳에 날 데려가 줘야겠어.킨 경찰관과 나는 네들의 도움이 필요하다는 것을 잘 알고 있으니까,얘들아."

- He walked them to the door.

"Don`t worry,we have a few tricks up our sleeves."

"I still think we should do something,"Ruth Rose said when they were outside.
-"난 우리가 매우 신중해야 한다고 생각해,"루스 로즈가 그들과 밖에서 말했다.
"Well..."Josh said.
-"그런데..."조시가 말했다.
"The circus is leaving tomorrow,and we do have those free tickets Officer Fallon gave us..."
-"서커스가 내일이면 끝나고,펄론 경찰관님이 공짜표도 주셨는데..."
Dink laughed.
-딩크가 웃었다.
Together,he and Josh talked Ruth Rose into visiting the circus for a few hours.
-그와 조시가 함께 루스 로즈에게 서커스장에 몇 시간만 놀다 오자고 말했다.
They watched a few animal acts and bought popcorn.
-그들은 팝콘을 사서 잠시 동물쇼를 관람했다.
Ruth Rose didn`t feel like going on any rides,so they decided to go into the clown tent again.
-루스 로즈는 말을 타는 것도 전혀 느낄수가 없었고,그들은 피에로가 있는 텐트로 갔다.
Two clowns dressed as firefighters were running around,bumping into each other while a small cardboard building"burned."
-두 명의 피에로가 드레스와 소방대원의 옷을 입고 주위를 달리고 있었고,보드지로 만든 건물은 불에 타고 있었다"불이야."
Smoke and fake flames were shooting out of a window.
-순식간에 창문으로 연기와 불이 솟구쳤다.
A woman clown was screaming,"Help!Save me!"
-여자 피에로가 소리쳤다,"도와주세요!절 구해주세요!"
Some fo the kids in the audience started yelling,"Save her,mister!Up there,save her!"
-관중들이 소리치기 시작했다,"그녀를 구해주세요,남자 분!저기 있는,그녀를 구해주세요!"
The firefighter clowns got tangled up in their own hoses,making everyone laugh and yell even louder.
-소방관 피에로가 호스를 들고 우왕좌왕하자,모든 사람들은 웃으며 크게 소리를 질렀다.
Suddenly a clown dressed like Superman appeared on stilts.
-갑자기 슈퍼맨 옷같은 것을 입은 피에로가 죽마를 신고 나타났다.
He wore a blue shirt under a red cape.
-그는 파란색 셔츠에 빨간색 망토를 걸치고 있었다.
Bright yellow suspenders held up the skinny blue pants that hid his stilts.
-반짝이는 노란색 멜빵에 꽉 끼는 파란색 바지를 입어 죽마를 숨겼다.
Superman flapped his cape and snapped his suspenders.
-슈퍼맨의 망토는 펄럭였고 멜빵에서 딸깍 소리가 났다.
Then he marched over to the burning towar and saved the woman.
-그런 후 불에 타오르는 탑을 향해 걸어가서 여자를 구해 주었다.
All the kids in the audience yelled and clapped.
-모든 아이들과 관중들이 소리를 지르며 박수를 쳤다.

- Dink noticed that Ruth Rose was hardly even looking.

He nudged Josh,and they left.

"I`d like to get me some stilts,"Josh said.
-"난 죽마 같은거 좋아하는데,"조시가 말했다.
He walked siff legged and snapped invisible suspenders.
-그는 뻣뻣하게 걸어가며 보이지 않는 멜빵을 딸깍거렸다.
"Do circuses ever hire kids?"
-"서커스에서는 아이들을 고용하는 것 같지 않아?"
"Yeah,to feed to the tigers,"Dink said,which reminded him of Ruth Rose`s Tiger.
-"응,타이거는 먹이를 잘 먹고 있으려나,"딩크는 그에게 루스 로즈의 타이거가 떠오르도록 말했다.
He looked at her.
-그는 그녀를 보았다.
"Do you want to come over and finish the Monopoly game?"
-"너는 타이거가 오기를 바라고 모노폴리 게임을 완성하고 싶어서 그러는거야?"
She shook her head.
-그녀는 고개를 끄덕였다.
"Don`t you guys want to solve this mystery?"
-"너희는 이 의문을 어떻게 해결하고 싶어?"
"Sure,but what else can we do?"Dink asked.
-"맞아,하지만 그것 외에 우리가 할 수 있는게 있을까?"딩크가 물었다.
"Officer Fallon said he`s gonna look for the people who returned the pets."
-"펄론 경찰관님이 동물을 다시 돌려준 어떤 사람들을 찾아주신다고 하셨잖아."
"Well,I know how we can help him,"Ruth Rose said,her eyes flashing.
-"맞아,우리가 그에게 도움을 받고 있다는 건 나도 알아,"루스 로즈가 말하는 것과 동시에,그녀의 눈에서 빛이 났다.
"Uh-oh,"Josh mumbled.
-"음,"조시가 중얼거렸다.
"Um,Ruth Rose,I don`t think Officer Fallon wants any more help,"Dink said.

Ruth Rose ignored him.

"Are you guys sleeping in the tent again tonight?"she asked.

Dink nodded.
-딩크가 고개를 끄덕였다.
"I guess so.Why?"

Ruth Rose grinned mysteriously.

"I promise to bring over some cookies if you promise to go somewhere with me."

"Where?"Dink asked.

"And why do you have that sneaky look on your face?"

"Wear dark clothes,"Ruth Rose said.

"We`re going to stake out Mrs.Davis`s house!"

"A stakeout?"Josh said.
-"잠복근무?"조시가 말했다.
Ruth Rose nodded.
-루스 로즈는 고개를 끄덕였다.
"Like in the cop movies?"Dink asked.
-"추리 영화처럼?"딩크가 물었다.
She nodded again.
-그녀는 또 다시 고개를 끄덕였다.
"You think Mrs.Davis`s house is going to get robbed tonight?"Josh said.
-"넌 오늘 밤 데이비스 여사의 집에 또 도둑질을 하러 올 것이라고 생각해?"조시가 말했다.
A third nod.
-모두 고개를 끄덕였다.
"And I plan to be there to see who does it."
-"그리고 난 그들이 올 상황을 계획했어."
She grinned.
-그녀는 히죽거렸다.
"Will that be enough proof for Officer Fallon?"
-"펄론 경찰관님이 충분한 증거가 있어야 한다고 하셨잖아?"
"Suppose a burglar does come,"Dink said.
-"밤도둑이 온다고 상상해 봐,"딩크가 말했다.
"What do we do,tie him up?"
-"우리가 그를 밧줄로 묶는다는 거야?"
"All right!"Josh said.
-"그래!"조시가 말했다.
"I`ll bring the rope."
-"내가 밧줄을 가져올게."
Ruth Rose shook her head.
-루스 로즈는 고개를 가로 저었다.
"No rope.We just sit and watch.If someone comes,one of us will run to the police station.The other two will stay.If the guy leaves,we follow him."
-"밧줄은 됐어.우리는 그냥 앉아서 지켜보기만 하면 되는거야.누군가가 오면,한 명이 경찰서로 달려가면 되고.다른 두 명은 그곳에 있으면 돼.그가 떠나면,우리가 그를 따라가면 되고."
Dink thought that over.
-딩크가 생각을 했다.
"Follow him where?"
-"어디로 그를 따라가?"
"Where he goes,Dink.Maybe he`ll lead us to where he stashed the stuff he robbed,"Ruth Rose said.
-"그가 가는 곳 어디든지,딩크.혹시 그가 또 다른 도둑질을 하기 위해 숨기는게 있을수도 있잖아,"루스 로즈가 말했다.
"And maybe that`s where he`s got Tiger."
-"그리고 어쩌면 타이거가 그곳에 있을수도 있잖아."
"Well,I guess it`ll work,as long as we just watch the guy,"Dink said.
-"그래,난 열심히 일을 할게,우리는 계속 남자를 지켜보기만 하면 되고 말이야,"딩크가 말했다.
Ruth Rose nodded.
-루스 로즈는 고개를 끄덕였다.
"We just wait and watch."
-"우리는 그냥 경계를 하며 기다리면 되는거야."
"And eat cookies,"Josh added.
-"그리고 쿠키도 먹고,"조시가 더 말했다.

- Dink and Josh sat in the dark tent,waiting for Ruth Rose.

It was almost ten o`clock.
-때는 10시 쯤 되었다.
Josh wore camouflage pants and a black T-shirt.
-조시는 검은색 바지와 티셔츠로 변장을 하였다.
Dink had on jeans and a dark gray sweatshirt.
-딩크는 청바지에 회색 스웨터를 입었다.
"Where the heck is she?"Josh asked.
-"그녀는 어디에 있는거야?"조시가 물었다.
Dink peeked out the tent flap.
-딩크는 텐트 안에서 밖을 엿보았다.
"My folks will kill me if we get caught running around Green Lawn at night."
-"가족들이 밤에 초록 잔디에서 나를 달려와서 잡아 죽일수도 있다고 말했었어."
"Mine would ground me for ten years,"Josh said.
-"내가 열살 때 그런 말을 들었었어,"조시가 말했다.
"Why`d we let her talk us into this?"

Dink heard a noise.
-딩크가 시끄러운 소리를 들었다.
"Did you hear something?"he whispered.
-"너 이 소리가 들리니?"그는 속삭였다.
Josh peeked out.
-조시는 밖을 엿보았다.
"Ruth Rose?Is that you?"
-"루스 로즈?거기 너야?"
"Boo!"Ruth Rose giggled.
-"하!"루스 로즈가 킬킬 웃었다.
"I`m right here,Josh."

Dink poked his head out.

Mrs.Davis`s house was dark as they crept into her backyard.

Dink tried not to think about what they were doing.

Ruth Rose chose their hiding place,a shadowy patch between two thick bushes behind the house.

The moon was almost full,but large clouds kept slipping in front of it.

Five seconds passed.

Dink stretched out on the grass.

They ate in silence,listening and watching for a burglar to show up.

Then he lay back down and shut his eyes again.

The burglar set his bag and the pole on the ground.

Then hi checked each first floor window on the back of the house.

He seemed to be looking directly at Dink.

Suddenly Josh grabbed Dink`s arm.

Dink tried to shrink into the dark space between the bushes.

His heart thudded as Fred Little stepped closer.

Then he stopped,took off his jacket,and hung it on a tree branch three feet from Dink`s nose.

He walked back toward the house.

They watched as Fred Little opened his gym bag.

He pulled out a coil of rope and looped it around his neck.

Then he picked up the long pole he`d brought with him.

"That must be how he`s comming down,"Ruth Rose said.

"Let`s take the rope and stilts,"Josh whispered.

"He`ll be trapped inside!"

"But Mrs.Davis is in there with him,"Ruth Rose said.

"We have to let him come out,then follow him."

"One of us should run to the police station now,"Dink said.

The trouble was,no one wanted to leave the excitement.

Suddenly three things happened at once:The upstairs light blazed on.

The Creation

Eve believed the snake.

Adam also ate the apple.

Suddenly,Adam and Eve felt cold and afraid.
