- "It's a skipping rope," Martha said.
"이건 줄넘기야."Martha가 말했다.
"Haven't you ever skipped before?"
"예전에 줄넘기 해본 적 없니?"
"Never."
"한번도요."
"I'll show you," Martha showed Mary how to skip.
"보여줄게." Martha는 Mary에게 줄넘기 하는 법을 보여주었다.
"You're a very kind," Mary siad.
"당신은 매우 친절해요." Mary가 말했다.
"And you spent some of your wages on the rope. Thank you."
"그리고 월급 중 일부를 저 줄 사는데 쓰셨잖아요. 고마워요."
Martha just smiled.
Martha가 웃었다.
She was pleased to see Mary happy.

"May I visit your house?" Mary asked.

"It's five mile walk," Martha said.

"That too much for you."

"I want to meet your mother and Dickon. I know I shall like them," Mary said.

"I wonder what Dickon will think of you?" Martha thought out loud.

Then she left the room to do he work in the house.

At this moment, the rodin flew toward them and landed at Mary's feet.

- "He remembers me," she said.
"그가 날 기억해요." 그녀가 말했다.
"He know everything that happens here," Ben said.

"Only he know what's happening in the garden that has no door into it. No one else has been inside it for ten years."

Ben walked away to continue his work.

Mary bent down and began talking to the robin.
Mary는 몸을 구부려서 울새에게 이야기 하기 시작했다.
She felt happier than she ever felt.
그녀는 매우 행복했다.
The robin trusted her and did not fly away.
울새는 그녀를 믿었기 때문에 멀리 날아가지 않았다.
It began pecking at the ground, looking for a worm to eat.
울새가 땅을 쪼더니 지렁이를 먹었다.
She saw something that looked like metal.
그녀는 금속 물직을 보았다.
She picked it up.

It was dirty and rusty.

"It's been in the ground for many years," she thought.

The robin followed her.

Mary stopped skipping and spoke to the robin.
Mary는 뛰는 것을 멈추고 울새에게 말했다.
"He showed me where to find the key," she thought.
"그가 열쇠가 어디있는지 알려줬잖아." 그녀가 생각했다.
"Can you show me where the door is?"
"문이 어디있는지 보여줄래?"
The robin sat on the top of the garden wall.
울새는 정원 벽 위에 앉았다.
It began to sing.
울새는 노래를 시작했다.

- The wall was covered with ivy.
벽은 담쟁이 덩쿨로 덮여있었다.
Mary pulled at a piece of the ivy.
Mary는 담쟁이 덩쿨 조각을 뜯었다.
Behind the wall was a door.
뒤에 문이 있었다.
Mary put the key in the lock of the door and turned it.
Mary는 열쇠를 자물쇠안에 넣고 돌렸다.
Only seconds later, Mary was inside the secret garden.
이초만에 Mary는 비밀정원으로 들어갔다.
Mary thought it was the most beautiful garden she had ever seen.
Mary는 그녀가 본 정원 중에 가장 아름다운 정원이라고 생각했다.
There were rose trees everywhere, but there were also many weeds.
어디에나 장미 나무가 있었지만, 잡초가 많았다.
There were also some dead plants that needed to be dug up and some roots that looked like onions.
그곳에도 죽은 식물이 파헤쳐져 있어서 양파처럼 보였다.
"Nothing seens to move in the garden," Mary thouth.
"정원에서 옮겨야 할 것은 없네." Mary가 생각했다.
"That's because no one has been inside it for ten years. I must work here and make it really beautiful. I shall come back this afternoon."
"아마 10년동안 사람이 들어오지 않아서 일거야. 내가 꼭 이곳은 정말로 아름다운 정원으로 바꿔야지. 오후에 다시 돌아와야겠다."
She left the garden and ran back to the house.
그녀는 정원을 나와서 집으로 뛰어갔다.
She ate a big meal.
그녀는 많은 양의 식사를 했다.
Martha said, "Skipping has made you hungry."
Martha가 말했다."줄넘기는 널 배고프게 해 줄거야."
"Yes," Mary said, and then she asked ,"Martha, I saw some roots that look like onions. Do you know what they are?"
"그런가봐요." Mary가 말하고 물었다. "Martha 제가 오늘 양파처럼 생긴 뿌리를 봤는데요. Martha는 그게 뭔지 알아요?"
"They are bulbs that grow into spring flowers," Martha said.
"그건 둥근 뿌리야. 그것은 봄 꽃이 필때 자라." Martha가 말했다.
"Dickon has planted a lot of them in our garden. she laught."
"Dickon이 우리 정원에 많은 식물을 심어놨어."그녀가 웃었다.
"He's so clever with plants that he can make flowers grow out of a wall."
"그는 식물에 대해 똑똑해. 그는 벽 너머로 자라게 할 수도 있어."
"Do bulbs last a long time? Mary asked.
"오래된 것도요?" Mary가 말했다.

- "They do. People just leave them in the ground, and every spring, flowers grow from them. "

"Ben Weatherstaff is too busy to talk to me. If I had a spade, I could make a little garden. Perhaps he will give me some seeds to plant. How much will a spade cost?"
"Ben Weatherstaff는 저에게 말을 걸어주시기에 너무 바쁘세요. 만약 제가 삽을 가지게 된다면 저는 작은 정원을 만들거에요. 혹시 어쩌면 그가 저에게 식물 씨를 조금 줄지도 몰라요. 삽 가격이 얼마나 할까요?"
"About two shillings," Martha said.
"대략 2실링일거야." Martha가 말했다.
"There are spades in a shop in Thwaite."
"삽이 있는 가게는 Thwaite에 있어."
"I've gow two shillings," Mary said, "Mr.Craven has given Mrs. Medlock money to give me. A shilling a week."
"저는 2실링이 있어요."Mary가 말했다, "Craven씨가 Medlock부인 보고 저에게 돈을 주라고 하셨어요. 주마다 1실링이요."
"Then you are rich," Martha said.

- "The shop in Thwaite also sells seeds. If you can print a list of what you want, I'll give it to Dickon. I'll go to my room and get a pen and some paper."

Martha went out.

She wrote to Dickon and told him what Mary wanted.

"We'll put the money in the envelope and give it to the butcher. he comes here today. He will take the letter to Dickon."

"How will Dickon get the spade and seeds to me?" Mary asked.

"Do you think she will let me?"

Mary had a thought.

- "Dose the kitchen still have a toothache?" she asked Martha.
"부엌에서 일하시는 분이 이가 아픈가요?" 그녀가 Martha에게 말했다.
"I throught I heard her crying again at the end of one of the corridors."
"제가 생각하기에 복도 끝에서 울음소리를 들은 것 같아요."
"You musten't go walkiong about the corridors listening of things." Martha said.
"너는 복도를 걷다가 다른 소리를 들은 걸 거야." Martha가 말했다.
"It will make Mr.Craven angry. I need to leave now. Mrs. Medlock wants me."
"Craven씨가 화날 거야. 지금 가야겠어. Medlock부인이 날 원해."
She ran out of the room.
그가 서둘러 방을 나갔다.
Mary thought Misselthwaite was the strangest house that anyone ever lived in.
Mary는 Misselthwaite에 있는 이상한 집에 누군가 산다고 생각했다.
Then she fell asleep.
그리고 그녀는 잠들었다.
The skipping had made her tired.
줄넘기가 그녀를 피곤하게 만들었다.
Mary spent much of her time in the "secret garden," for this is what she called it.

She dug up the weeds and made it tidy.

She also tried talk to Ben Weatherstaff.

She wanted to ask his advice about what flowers to grow.

"It had a garden," she said to him one day, "what flowers are the best?"

He did not know she went to the secret garden.

"Roses are the best," he said.

"I used to be the gardener to a young lady. She taught me a lot about roses. She loved them. she used to kiss them."

"Where is she now?" Mary asked him.

"She died," he said "Ten tears ago."

He walked away.

Mary did not follow him.
Mary는 그를 따라가지 않았다.
She knew that he did not want to talk any more that day.

On the other side of the garden was a wooded area.
정원 한곳에는 나무가 많은 곳이 있었다.
Mary skipped toward it.
Mary는 그곳으로 줄넘기를 하러 갔다.
To her suprise, there was a boy sitting under one of the tree.

He was playing a tune on a wooden pipe.
그는 피리를 불고 있었다.
He was about twelve years of age, and he had bright blue eyes and a red face.
그는 열두살이었고, 빛나는 푸른 눈동자와 붉은빛이 나는 얼굴을 가지고 있었다.
Two rabbits, a squirrel, and a large bird seemed to be listening to him play.
두마리의 토끼와, 다람쥐와, 큰 새가 그가 연주하는 듣고 보고 있었다.
As soon as he saw Mary, he said, "Don't come any nearer. You'll frighten away the animls."
곧 그가 Mary를 보았다. 그가 말했다. "더 이상 가까이 오지마. 너는 동물들을 가게 할거야."
He played for a little longer then slowly stood up.
그는 천천히 일어서기 위해 연주를 했다.
The animals ran away.

He came toward Mary.

"I'm Dickon," he said. "And I know who you are. You're Mary."

"Did you Martha's letter?" Mary asked.

"I did. And that's why I'm here." He picked up a large package on the gound.

"I got you the gardening tools and some seeds,"
"정원을 가꿀 때 쓰는 도구와 씨앗을 좀 가져왔어."
Mary sat down on an old log.

"Show me the seeds," she said.
"씨앗을 보여줘," 그녀가 말했다.
"We can look at them together."
"같이 봐야해."
They talked about the seeds for a while, then they heard a bird sining.
그들이 씨앗에 대해서 이야기하는 동안, 그들은 새들이 노래하는 소리를 들었다.
Dickon asked, "Where's that robin that's calling us?"
Dickon이 물었다. "울새가 어디서 우리를 부를까?"
"Is it really calling us?" Mary asked.

"Yes, He's calling someone he's friends with."

"He's friends with Ben Weatherstaff," Mary said, "but he also knows me."

Dickon made a sound like the rodin's song.

- Then he picked up one if the packets of seeds and asked, "Shell I help you plant them in your garden?"
그리고 그는 봉투안에 들어있는 씨앗을 하나 집으며 말했다. "내가 네 농장에 가서 식물을 기르는 것을 도와줄까?"
Mary did not say naything.
Mary는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
Dickon asked, "Haven't they given you a piece of garden?"

"No," Mary said.
"아니," Mary가 말했다.
She wanted to tell him about the secret garden, but she did not know if she could trust him.

She said, "Can you keep a secret?"

"If I told people about all my animal friends, they would want to see them, and then they would frighten them away."

Mary felt she could trust Dickon.
Mary는 Dickon에게 비밀의 정원에 대해 말하고 싶었다.
She said, "I've stolen a graden. Only I know how to get into it. No one has cared for it for years. It's full of weeds."

She began to cry.

Mary sood up and walked to where the door was hidden.

Dickon followed her.

She opened the door and walked in.
그녀는 문을 열고 그 안으로 들어갔다.
Dickon was just behind her.
Dickon은 그녀 뒤에서 걸었다.
"It's a dead garden," she said.
"이건 죽은 정원이야," 그녀가 말했다.
"I'm the only person in the world who wants to bring it alive."
"나는 여기에서 살아있는 사람이고."
Dickon looked around.
Dickon은 주위를 둘러보았다.
"It's a strange place," he said.

- "But it's pretty. It's almost like a garden in a dream." Then he added, "I never thought I'd see this place."

"Do you know about it?" Mary asked him.

"Martha told me about a garden that no one ever goes into. This must be it."

He put his fingers to his mouth.
그가 손가락을 입에 물었다.
"But speak quietly. We don't want anyone to hear us in here."
"하지만 소리를 작게 하면, 우리가 여기 있는 것을 모를거야."
He began to walk around the garden, looking at all the plants.
그는 정원을 걸으면서 식물을 둘러보기 시작했다.
"There's a lot of work to do here," he said.

"We need to take out all the weeds. Cut away the dead plants and dead wood in the bushes. The reses need a lot of care."

They came to a place.
그들은 정원으로 들어갔다.
"Someone's been working here," Dickon said.

"I have," Mary told him. "I planted some spring bulbs." she turned toward him.

"Dickon, will you come here and help me make the garden beautiful again?"
"Dickon, 네가 여기를 가꾸는 것을 도와주면 이 정원이 다시 아름다워질 수 있을까?"
"I will," he said.
"할 수 있어," 그가 말했다.
"But we won't make it too tidy. I don't want the garden to look like every other garden."
"하지만 나는 너무 말끔한 건 싫어. 나는 이 정원이 다른 정원처러 되지 않았으면 좋겠거든."
"We'll plant all kinds of things," he said.
"우리 식물종류를 생각해보자," 그가 말했다.
He looked around.
그가 주위를 둘러보았다.
"But those old roses look like someone was here ten years ago and never came back."
"하지만 여기에는 나이든 장미가 보이고 누군가 십년전에 왔던 것 같아."
Just then Mary heard a clock strike twelve.
Mary가 12시를 알리는 소리를 들었다.
"I must go," she said.
"나 지금 가야되." 그녀가 말했다.
"If i don't in for lunch, someone will come liiking for me."
"내가 지금 안가면 누군가가 나를 찾으러 올거야."
"You go," Dickon said.
"가," Dickon이 말했다.
"I've brought my lunch with me. And a little bit more for the birds."
"내가 너랑 같이 먹을 점심밥을 가지고 올게. 그리고 새들을 줄 작은 조각도."
"Promise you won't fell anyone about this place," Mary pleaded.
"이 정원에 대해 다른 사람에게 이야기 하지 않는 다고 약속해." Mary가 말했다.
"I promise," Dickon siad.
"약속할게." Dickon이 말했다.
"Your secret is safe with me."
"네 비밀을 지켜줄게."
And Mary was sure that it was.

Mary ran back to the house as fast as she could.

"You're late for lunch," she said.

"I met Dickon," Mary said, excitedly.

"I knew he would come," Martha said. "Do you like him?"

"I think he's wonderful," Mary said. She laughed.

"And I love hes face, even though his nose turns up."

"Did he bring the seeds and tools?" Martha said.

"Oh, yes."

"where will you plant the seeds?"

Mary did not want to tell Martha about the secret garden.
Mary는 Martha에게 비밀의 정원에 대해 말해주기가 싫었다.
She said. "I don't know yet."
그녀가 말했다. "아직 몰라요."
"Ask Ben Weatherstaff," Martha said.
"Ben Weathersfaff에게 물어보자." Martha가 말했다.
"He'll find you a corner of the garden."
"그는 너에게 정원 귀퉁이를 내줄거야."
Mary began to ear and when she finished, Martha said, "Mr. Craven came back this morning. He wants to see you."
Mary가 식사를 마쳤을 때쯤 Martha가 말했다. "Craven씨가 오늘 아침에 오셨어. 그가 너를 만나고 싶으시대."
"Why didn't he want to see me when I came here?"
"왜 그는 제가 여기와있는 동안 저를 만나지 않으셨나요?"
Mary wanted to know.
Mary는 알고 싶었다.
Martha replied, "I don't know, but I think my mother said something to him about you. She met him in the village."
Martha가 대답했다. "나도 잘 몰라. 하지만 우리 엄마가 그에게 너게 대해 말했데. 그녀는 그를 마을에서 만났데."
"Will he stay long this time?" Mary asked.

"No," Martha said. "He's going away again tomorrow. He'll be away for a long time."

Mary pleased by this news.

She wanted time to bring her secret garden back to life.

- Before Mary could ask Martha more questions, Mrs. Medlock came into the room.
Mary가 Martha에게 몇 가지 질문을 더 물어본 다음 Medlock부인이 방안으로 들어왔다.
"Go to your room and put on a clean dress," she said.

Mary did as she was told.

A few minuites later, she was standing in front of Mr. Craven in his study.

She was a man who was not ugly, but who looked very miserable.

"Are you well?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Do they take good care of you?"

"I'm getting fatter."

"I'm sorry," he said.

"I forgot about you. I intended to get you a governess or a nurse."
"내가 너에 대해 잊어버렸어. 나는 네 가정교사나 간호사를 들일생각이다."
Mary did not want any such person in her life.
Mary는 다른 사람이 그녀의 삶에 들어오길 바라지 않았다.
"Please don't get anyone." she said.
"아무도 안 들였으면 좋겠어요." 그녀가 말했다.
"I don't need them. I'm too old for them now."
"저는 그들이 필요하지 않아요. 그들이 필요하기에는 저는 나이가 너무 많아요."
"Very well. What do you want to do?"
"좋다. 그럼 너는 무엇을 원하니?"
"I just want to play outside. I feel stronger when I play and the wind comes across the moor."
"저는 바깥에서 놀고 싶어요. 바람이 부는 황무지에서 놀다보면 제가 강해진 느낌이 들어요."
"Where do you play?" Mr. Cravne asked.
"너는 어디에서 노니?" Craven씨가 물었다.
"Everywhere," Mary said.
"어디서든요." Mary가 말했다.
"I skip, and I run. I don't do any harm."
"까불고 뛰어다녀도 저는 안 다쳤어요."
"Of course, you won't." he said.
"물론 다치면 안되지." 그가 말했다.
"You may play wherever you want to. Do you want any toys? Dooks? Dolls?"
"네가 노는데 필요한것이 있으면 말하렴. 장난감을 원하니? 아니면 책? 인형?"
Mary shook her head.
Mary는 머리가 아팠다.
"No, but I'd like a small piece of a gardne."
