From time to time, he went to the field and would dig up the gold to make sure it was still there.
같은 시간 그가 들에 가서 묻고 땅을 파헤치고 금을 가져가려고 했다.
Then he would bury it again.
그리고 그는 금을 다시 묻었다.
A man who was building a house nearby saw the miser burying the gold again.

One night, the man went into the miser's field, bug up the bar of gold, and stole it.

The miser went to the hole the next day.

He could not find the gold.

A friend saw him crying and asked what the matter was.

When the miser told him, the friend said, "Put some stones in the hole and pretend they are gold."

<The Ass and the Pet Dog>
A man had and ass and a very pretty little pet dog.
남자는 당나귀와 아주 작고 예쁜 강아지를 키우고 있었다.
The ass slept in a warm stable at night and had plenty to eat, but he had to work hard during the day.
당나귀는 밤에는 따뜻한 마구간에서 자고 풀 밥을 먹었지만 그는 낮에 열심히 일했다.
The pet dog, on the other hand, lived in the house, slept in its master's bed, and had no work to do.
강아지는 집안에서 살았고 주인의 침대에서 잤지만 일하지 않았다.
Its master of nice things to eat and played with it.
주인은 맛있는 음식을 주고 함께 놀아주었다.
The dog never did any work.
개는 아무 일도 하지 않았다.
The ass thought it was not right that the dog had such an easy life, while he had to work.
당나귀가 생각하기에 이건 옳지 않았다. 개는 쉬운 삶을 살고 그는 힘들게 일했다.

A lion fell in love with a woodcutter's daughter and told the man to let the girl marry him.

The woodcutter and his daugther were very afraid of the lion.

The woodcutter knew that somehow he had to find a way of killing the lion.

After a lot of thought he said to the lion, "I will be pleased for you to marry my daughter, but she is very afraid of your teeth and claws. If you will let me take them all out, you can marry her. I am sure my daughter will then make you a good wife."

The lion could think only of how much he loved the girl and wanted her for a wife.

So, he let the woodcutter take out all his teeth and claws.

As soon as the lion was toothless and calwless, the woodcutter began hitting him with a heavy stick.

The lion could not defend himself without teeth or claws, so he ran away. He was also unavle to kill for food, so he soon died.

- <The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing>
Once upon a time, there was a wolf that put on a sheep's skin to make the sheep on a farm think he was one of them.

Then they would let him get near them, and he would be able to kill and eat one of them.

A shepherd-boy looked after the sheep belonging to the people of the village.

One day he cried,"Wolf! Wolf!"
어느날 그가 크게 소리쳤다. "늑대가 나타났어요! 늑대가 나타났어!"
Hearing him, the villagers ran to help him drive away the wolf.
목소리를 들은 마을 사람들이 늑대를 쫓아버리기 위해 달려왔다.
The boy thought it was very funny.
소년이 생각하기에 이건 매우 재밌었다.
"You weren't quick enough," he said to them.

"The wolf has run away."

Thinking he was very clever, a few days later he shouted "Wolf!" again.

A man had two daughters.

The man wanted to give and wish to each daughter.

Mary가 방안으로 들어갔다.
There was a fire to warm it and food on a small table.

Mary was not at all pleased with her new home.

"No, I work for Mrs, Medlock, the housekeeper."
"아니요, 저는 가정부로 Medlock부인을 위해 일해요."
"Where is my maid?" Mary asked.

- "In India, I had my own maid."

"You won't have one here," Martha said and walked to the fireplace.
"너는 여기 있는것이 싫구나," Martha가 말하고 난로로 걸어갔다.
"Don't be rude," Mary said angrily.
"예의 없이 날 대하지 말아요," Mary가 화난 목소리로 말했다.
"Don't you know who I am?"
"내가 누군지 알아요?"
"Yes, you're the girl from India," Martha said.
"응, 넌 인도에서 온 여자아이야." Martha가 말했다.
"Life isn't the same here."
"정신은 여기 없지만 말이야."
"But who will dress me if I haven't got a maid?"
"하지만 가정부가 없다면 누가 옷을 입혀줄까?"
"I never dress myself," Mary answered.
"나는 한번도 혼자 옷을 입어 본 적이 없어요,"
"I don't even know how to put on my shoes."
"나는 신발을 어떻게 신는지도 몰라요."
"Then you'll have to learn," Martha said.
"그러면 넌 배워야 겠네," Martha가 말했다.
"There's no one here to do that for you."
"여기에는 그것을 하기 위한 것이 없어."
Martha began to clean the fireplace and set a new fire.
Martha가 난로로가서 새로운 나무를 넣었다.
Mary went to the window and looked out.
Mary는 창문으로 가서 밖을 보았다.
As Martha worked, she talked to Mary.
Martha가 일해면서 Mary와 이야기 했다.
She was not used to servants talking to her if they were the same.
그녀는 가정부랑 같은 위치에서 이야기하는 것이 어색했다.
"What do you think of the moor?" Martha asked her.
"황무지에 대해 어떻게 생각해?" Martha가 그녀에게 물었다.
"I don't like it. There are no tress," Mary answered.
"별로에요, 여기는 나무가 없잖아요," Mary가 대답했다.
"It has its own kind of beauty," Martha replied.
"이건 다른 종류의 아름다움 인 것 같아," Martha가 말했다.

- "My brother , Dickon, loves the moor."
"내 형제 Dickon은 황무지를 좋아했어."
"He spends all his spare time on it."
"그는 절약한 시간을 황무지에 썼어."
"he has his own pony."
"그는 그의 조랑말을 가지고 있었어."
"It is wild, but it comes to him when he calls it, and it lets him ride it."
"그것은 야생조랑말이었지만 그가 부르면 항상 와서 그를 태워주었어."
"I've never had a pony," Mary said.

Martha then lit the fire and left the room.

Mary began to dress herself.

At first, she found it diffcult, especially lacing up her shoes.

"I'm not going throw away good food."
"난 좋은 음식을 치우지 않을 거야."
"We're always hungry at home because we never enough money to buy food for us all."
"우린 충분한 돈으로 음식을 살 수 없어서 항상 배고파."
"It's wrong to waste good food."
"좋은 음식을 낭비하는 것은 잘 못된 거야."
"I'll eat some of the toast and marmalade and drink some tea," Mary said.
"저는 토스트랑 마멀레이드를 먹고 차를 마실거에요," Mary가 말했다.
"You can do what you like with the porridge."
"너는 포리지랑 같이 네가 좋아하는 음식을 먹을 수 있어."
She sat down and began to eat some breakfast.
그녀는 앉아서 아침을 먹었다.
"You should go out after your meal," Martha said.
"너는 식사를 다하고 밖에 나갈 수 있어." Martha가 말했다.
"You shouldn't stay indoors all the time. There's nothing of you to do in the house."
"너는 모든 시간을 방안에서 보낼 필요는 없어. 네가 하고 놀게 이 집 안에는 없어."

- Mary asked, "Will you come with me if I go out?"
"만약 내가 나가서 놀면 같이 나가서 놀 거에요?" Mary가 물었다.
"In India, I always had a servant with me."
"인도에서는 항상 가정부랑 같이 있었어요."
"I'm not youre servant," Martha insisted.
"나는 너의 가정부가 아니야." Martha가 주장했다.
"I told you. I work for Mrs. Medlock, and on my day off, I go home."
"내가 말했잖아. 나는 Medlock부인을 위해 일하고 오늘은 쉬는 날이라 집에 갈거야."
"You must learn to do things on your own."
"넌 네것이 뭔지 배워야 겠구나."
With these words, Martha left Mary alone.
그 말을 하고 Martha가 나가고 Mary는 혼자가 되었다.
Mary finished her breakfast and left the house.
Mary는 아침식사를 마치고 집에서 나왔다.
She went into the huge garden.
그녀는 큰 정원에 들어갔다.
Much of it was park land, but she soon came to a wall with a door in it.
이건 큰 공원같았지만 그녀는 곧 그 안으로 들어가는 문 앞에 섰다.
She opened the door and went inside.
그녀는 문을 열고 그 안으로 들어가려 했다.
An old man was working in the garden.
늙은 남자가 정원에서 일하고 있었다.
"What kind of garden is this?" Mary asked him.
"이 정원은 뭐에요?" Mary가 물었다.
"There aren't any flowers."
"그 안에는 아무 꽃도 없단다."
"This is the kitchen garden," the old man said.
"부엌에서 쓰는 채소를 기르는 정원이야." 할아버지가 말했다.
"It's where I grow all the vegerables for the kitchen."
"여기에서 부엌에서 쓸 채소를 기른단다."
Mary walked to the other side of the garden to another wall.
Mary는 다른 쪽에 있는 정원 벽 앞으로 걸어갔다.
It also had a door in it.
그곳또한 문이 있었다.
This garden was full of fruit trees.
그 정원에는 과일 나무가 많이 있었다.
Mary could see tall trees on the other side of one of the walls of this garden.
Mary는 큰 나무를 보다가 다른 쪽 벽을 보았다.
She walked toward the wall.
그녀는 벽쪽으로 걸어갔다.
She looked ofra door.
그녀는 문을 보았다.
There wasn't one.
거기엔 없었다.
She went back to the old man.
그녀는 할아버지에게 갔다.
he had a bird sitting on his had, and he was talking to it.
그의 손에는 새가 앉아있었고, 그는 그 새에 대해서 말해주었다.
"What kind of bird is that" Mary asked him.
"이건 무슨 새에요?" Mary가 그에게 물었다.
"It's a robin red-breast," the old man aswered.
"이건 개똥지빠귀야." 할아버지가 대답했다.
"he's my friend."
"그는 내 친구야."
"You are lucky to have a friend," Mary said.
"너는 친구가 있어서 좋겠다." Mary가 말했다.
"I've never had a friend. Im lonely."
"나는 친구가 없었어. 나는 혼자야."

- "Are you the young girl from India?" the old man asked her.
"너는 인도에서 온 어린 소녀니?" 할아버지가 물었다.
"Yes," Mary answered.
"맞아요," Mary가 대답했다.
"Who are you?"
"누구세요?"
"I'm Ben Weatherstaff, the gardener," the old man said.
"나는 Ben Weatherstaff고 정원사야." 할아버지가 말했다.
Mary asked the bird.
Mary가 새에게 물었다.
"Will you be my friend?"
"너 내 친구할래?"
The bird flew toward a tree and sat on a branch.
새는 나무로 날아가서 가지에 앉았다.
It began to sing.
새가 노래하기 시작했다.
"It like you," Ben Weatherstaff said.
"이 새가 널 좋아하나 보다." Ben Weatherstaff가 말했다.
"Do you know a boy called Dickon?" Mary asked him next.
"Dickon이라 불리는 남자아이를 알아요?" Mary가 그에게 물었다.
"Everyone knows Dickon," Ben said.
"모두 Dickon을 안단다." Ben이 말했다.
"He loves the moor and spends most of his time there."
"그는 황무지를 좋아하고 많은 시간동안 황무지에 있었어."
At this moment, the bird flew away form the tree, over the orchard wall and onto the branch of a tree outside the orchard.
잠시 뒤에, 새는 과수원에 있는 나무의 나뭇가지에 앉았다가 과수원을 나갔다.
"There's another garden," Mary said.
"거긴 아무 정원도 없어요." Mary가 말했다.
"But couldn't find a door to it."
"하지만 문을 찾을 수 없어요,"
"There isn't a door," Ben said.
"거기에는 문이 없단다." Ben이 말했다.
"No door! I don't belive it," Mary exclaimed.
"문이 없다고요! 믿을 수 없어요," Mary가 소리쳤다.
"There used to be a door", Ben told her, "but there hasn't been one for ten years. No one can find a door, so don't you go looking for one."
"저곳은 문이 필요해," Ben이 그녀에게 말했다. "하지만 저곳은 10년 전부터 없었어. 아무도 문을 찾지 못했지. 그러니까 너도 저곳을 보려 하지는 마렴."
"That garden is none of your business. Go away and play."
"여기는 네가 일하는 곳이 아니다. 그러니 다른 데서 놀렴."
And with these words, he turned away and began digging.
말을 하고 그는 땅을 파기 시작했다.
There was nothing for mary to do in the house, so every day she walked in the gardens.
그 집에는 Mary가 하고 놀게 아무것도 없었다. 그래서 그녀는 매일 정원에 갔다.
She did this before breakfast, and the fresh air made her hungry.
그녀는 아침 밥을 먹기전에 나갔기 대문에 신선한 공기는 그녀를 배고프게 했다.
She was so hungry that she even ate the porridge and enjoyed it.
그녀는 배가 고플때면 포리지를 먹고 그것을 즐겼다.

- After breakfast, Mary walked in the gardens and on the moor.
아침 식사 뒤에, Mary는 황무지에 있는 정원으로 갔다.
She spent most of her time outdoors and began to feel healthies and happier than she had felt for a very long time.
그녀는 그녀의 시간 중 많은 시간을 밖에서 보냈고, 건강해지고 행복해지는 것을 느꼈다. 그녀는 매우 많은 시간을 밖에서 보냈다.
One day, she walked around the wall without a door.

Sunddenly, she heard a bird singing.

She looked up, and the robin was sitting on a branch that hung over the wall.
그녀가 위를 올려다보니 울새가 벽 너머에 걸쳐 있는 나뭇가지에 앉아있었다.
She was pleased to see the bird and talked to it.
그녀가 새를 보며 말을 걸었다.
"You live in that garden, don'y you?" she said.
"너는 저 정원에 살아. 아니야?" 그녀가 말했다.
"But no one can go in because there isn't door. I want to know what's behind this wall."
"하지만 문이 없어서 아무도 그 안으로 들어갈 수 없어. 나는 이 벽 뒤에는 뭐가 있을지 알고 싶어."
The next morning, when Martha brought her breakfast, she asked, "Martha, why isn't there a door in the wall of one of the gardens?"
다음 날 아침, Martha가 아침을 들고 왔을 때 그녀가 물었다. "Martha, 왜 하나의 정원에만 문이 없어요?"
"No one is allowed in there," Martha answered.
"그 안에 들어가는 것을 허락하지 않았으니까," Martha가 대답했다.
"Even Mr. Craven never goes in there."
"Craven씨 조차도 그 안에 들어가지 않았어."
"But why not? What's wrong with the place?"
"하지만 왜 안되요? 그곳이 뭐가 잘못 됬나요?"
"I don't know for certain," Martha answered, "but the story is that when Mr. Craven married, he and his young wife were very happy."
"나는 정확히 몰라." Martha가 대답했다."하지만 거기서 Craven씨가 그의 어린 부인과 결혼했고, 행복했다는 이야기가 있어."
"They used to spend a lot of their thime together in that garden reading and talking."
"그들은 많은 시간을 그 정원에서 생활했어. 함께 책을 읽고 이야기 했데."
"Then one day, a branch of a tree fell down and hit Mr. Craven's wife on the head. The next day she died."

"Oh, that is such a sad story," Mary said.
"오, 매우 슬픈 이야기네요."
And then she thought that four good thing had happened to her since her arrival at Misselthwaite Marnor.
그리고 그녀는 Misselthwaite Marnor에 와서 행복했던 네가지 것들을 생각했다.

- She found a new firend, the robin; she felt really healthy; she enjoyed her food, even her porridge; and for the first time in er life she flet sorry someone.
그녀는 새 친구 울새를 만났고; 건강해지는 느낌을 받았고; 그녀는 그녀의 음식인 포리지를 좋아하게 되었고; 처음으로 누군가에게 미안함을 느꼈다.
She felt that she was becoming a better person.
그녀는 더 좋은 사람이 된 것 같다고 느꼈다.
As she was thinking these things, she heard a cry.
그녀가 그것들에 대해 생각하고 있을 때, 그녀는 우는 소리를 들었다.
"What was that?" she asked Martha.
"뭐에요?" 그녀가 Martha에게 물었다.
Quickly, Martha answered, "Just the wind."

"No, it wasn't," Mary said.

"It did not sound like the wind. And I heard a door shut somewhere."

"If it wasn't the wind," Martha answered, "then it was Betty in the kitchen. she has a toothache."
"이게 바람이 아니라면," Martha가 대답했다. "이건 Betty가 주방에서 내는 소리야. 그녀는 이가 아프거든."
Mary looked at Martha and thought, "She is not telling me the thuth. She knows something she doesn't wnat me to know."
Mary가 Marth를 보며 생각했다."그녀는 나한테 진실을 말해주지 않아. 그녀는 내가 무언가를 아는 것을 원하지 않는거야."
Two days later, Mary was talking to Martha.
이틀이 지나고, Mary는 Martha와 이야기하고 있었다.
She did not treat her as a servant now.

She thought of her as a friend.
그녀는 그녀를 친구로 생각하고 있었다.
Matha felt sorry for her.
Martha는 그녀에게 미안하다고 느끼고 있었다.
She knew how lonely she was.
그녀는 Mary가 얼마나 외로울지 알고 있었기 때문이다.
"I bought you a present," she said.
"내가 니 선물을 샀어." 그녀가 말했다.
"Me? A present?" Mary was very surprised.
"저요? 선물을요?" Mary가 매우 놀랐다.
"I bought it from a man I met on my way to work."
"이건 일하러 가는 길에 만난 남자에게서 샀어."
She handed Mary a piece of rope.
그녀가 Mary의 손에 줄 조각을 주었다.
"What's this for?" Mary asked.
"이건 어디다 쓰는 거에요?" Mary가 물었다.
