saving them from dying out => 여기서 save는 [저장하다]의 뜻이 아닌 [구하다, 구출하다]의 뜻이란다. 그러므로 [죽음으로부터 그들을 지켜내며]라고 해석해야 적절할 것 같구나.
beginning, 으로 시작하는 문장에서 begin은 [시작하다]라는 뜻이고, 여기에 ing가 붙어서 beginning 분사구문이 되었다. 분사구문은 접속사와 주어가 생략된 형태이며 본래의 접속사 뜻을 유추해낼 줄 알아야 한다. 여기서는 When접속사가 생략되었다고 보는 것이 적절할 것이야. 어려운 부분일테니까 이해가 안되면 직접 가르쳐 주도록 하겠다.
cloud-gatherer에서 gather는 [수집하다, 모으다]의 뜻이 맞다. cloud와 gatherer를 [-]표시로 묶은 것은 한 단어로 취급한다는 뜻이다. [구름을 불러모으는 자] 즉, Rain-God이자 Cloud-gatherer라는 것은 [비의 신이자 구름의 신]이라는 뜻이므로 전지전능하게 날씨를 변화시키는 신을 나타낸다.
