- "You mean you taught yourself?"
-"그러면 독학을 했단 거니?"
"I don't quite know," Matilda said truthfully.
-"잘 모르겠어요," 마틸다가 솔직하게 말했다.
"It's just that I don't find it very difficult to multiply one number by another."
-"다만 전 한 수를 다른 수로 곱하는 것을 어렵게 깨우치지 않았을 뿐이에요.
Miss Honey took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
-허니 선생님은 숨을 크게 들이쉬고 천천히 내쉬었다.
She tooked again at the small girl with bright eyes standing beside her desk so sensible and solemn.
-그녀는 자기 책상 옆에 선 눈이 초롱초롱한 소녀를 다시 한 번 쳐다보았다.
"You say you don't find it difficult to multiply
one number by another," Miss Honey said.
-"네 말은 네가 곱셈을 어렵지 않게 깨우쳤단 뜻이지?"
"Could you try to explain a little bit."
-"그러면 조금 설명 좀 해 주겠니?"

- "Oh dear," Matilda said.
-"선생님,"
"I'm not really sure."
-"그건 저도 잘 모르겠어요."
Miss Honey waited.
-허니 선생님은 기다리고 있었다.
The class was silent, all listening.
-다른 학생들도 모두 조용히 듣고 있었다.
"For instance," Miss Honey said.
-"예를 들어,"
"if I asked you to multiply fourteen by nineteen...
-"너에게 14*19가 뭐냐고 물어본다면...
No, that's too difficult..."
-아냐..그건 너무 어려워..."
"it's two hundred and sixty-six," Matilda said softly.
-"266이에요," 마틸다가 살며시 입을 열었다.
Miss Honey stared at her.
-허니 선생님이 그녀를 빤히 쳐다봤다.

- Then she picked up a pencil and quickly worked out the sum on a piece paper.
-그런 다음 그녀는 종이 쪼123가리에 빠르게 계산을 했다.
"What did you say it was?" she said, looking up.
-"아까 뭐라고 그랬지?"
"Two hundred and sixty-six," Matilda said.
-"266이요,"
Miss Honey put down her pencil and removed her spectacles
and began to polish the lenses with a piece of tissue.
-허니 선생님은 연필을 내려놓고 안경을 벗어
티슈로 안경알을 닦기 시작했다.
The class remained quiet, watching her and waiting for what was coming next.
-학생들은 조용히 선생님을 쳐다보며 다음에 일어날 일을 기다리고 있었다.
Matilda was still standing up beside her desk.
-마틸다는 여전히 자기 책상 옆에 서 있었다.

- "Now tell me, Matilda," Miss honey said, still polishing,
"try to tell me exactly what goes on inside your head
when you get a multiplication like that to do.
-"이제 말해 보렴, 마틸다." 계속 안경을 닦으며 허니 선생님이 말했다.
"네가 어떻게 머릿속에서 곱셈을 하는지 정확히 말해 주렴.
You obviously have to work it out in some way,
but you seem able to arrive at the answer almost instantly.
-넌 분명히 그렇게 빠르게 값을 도출해내기 위하여 머릿속에서 어떻게든 무언가를 할 거야.
Take the one you've just done, fourteen multiplied by nineteen."
-네가 방금 전에 풀었던, 14곱하기 19를 예로 들어 설명해보렴."
"I..I..I simply put the fourteen down in my head
and multiply iy by nineteen,"Matilda said.
-저..저는 간단하게 제 머릿속에서 14를 아래에 두고 18로 곱한 것 밖에 없어요,"
"I'm afraid I don't know how else to explain it.
-"유감스럽게도 어떻게 다른 방법으로 설명해야 할 지 모르겠어요.
I've always said to myself that if a little pocket calcultator can do it why shoudn't I?"
-전 언제나 저 작은 휴대용 계산기도 할 수 있는 걸 난 왜 못 할까하고 자문했어요."
"Why not indeed?" Miss Honey said.
"정말?"
"The human brain is an amazing thing."
-사람의 두뇌는 참으로 신기하구나."

- "I think it's a lot better than a lump of metal," Matilda said.
-"전 사람의 머리가 쇳덩어리,"
"That's all a calculator is."
-"계산기보다 좋다고 생각해요."
"How right you are," Miss Honey said.
-"동감이야,"
"Pocket calculators are not allowed in this school anyway."
-"계산기는 어쨋든 학교에서 금지되어 있잖아."
Miss Honey was feeling quite quivery.
-허니 선생님은 전율을 느꼈다.
There was no doubt in her mind that she had met
a truly extraordinary mathmatical brain,
and words like child-genius and prodigy went flitting
through her head.
-비범한 수학적 두뇌를 가진 사람과 만났다는 느낌이 들었고,
천재, 신동 같은 말들이 머릿속에서 많이 떠올랐다.

- She knew that these sorts of wonders do pop up
in the world from time to time,
but only once or twice in a hundred years.
-그녀도 이런 천재들이 가끔씩 전 세계에서 나오기는 하지만

After all, Mozart was only five when he started composing
for the piano and look what happened him.
-모차르트가 음악의 신동이라고 밝혀지고 작곡을 시작할 때가 그의 나이 5세 아니었던가.
"It's not fair," Lavender said.
-"이건 불공평해요," 라벤더가 말했다.
"How can she do it and we can't?"
-"왜 저 애는 하는데 우리는 못 하는 거죠?

- "Don't worry, Lavender, you'll soon catch up," Miss Honey said,
lying through her teeth.
-허니 선생님은 새빨간 거짓말을 했다. "라벤더, 걱정하지 마. 너도 곧 할 수 있을 거야."
At this point Miss Honey could not resist the temptation
of exploring still further the mind of this astonishing child.
-허니 선생님은 이 비범한 아이를 좀 더 캐 보고 싶은 유혹을 참을 수가 없었다.
She knew that she ought to be paying some attention
to the rest of the class but she was altogether
too excited to let the matter rest.
-그녀는 다른 아이들에게도 관심을 가져야 한다는 것을 알고 있었지만
여기서 멈추기에는 너무나도 가슴이 뛰었다.

- "Well," she said, pretending to address the whole class,
"let us leave sums for the moment and see
if any of you have begun to learn to spell.

Hands up anyone who can spell cat."
-누구 고양이의 철자를 말할 수 있는 사람 손 들어 봐요."
Three hands went up.
-세 명이 손을 들었다.
They belonged to Lavender, a small boy called Nigel and to Matilda.
-그 세 명은 라벤더와 자그마한 소년 니겔, 그리고 마틸다였다.
"Spell cat, Nigel."
-"한 번 철자를 말해 보렴, 니겔."
Nigel spelled it.
-니겔이 고양이의 철자를 불렀다.

- Miss Honey now decided to ask a question
that normally she would not have dreamed of
asking the class on its first day.
-허니 선생님은 햇병아리들에게 꿈에서도 질문 못 할 문제를 내기로 했다.
"I wonder," she said,
"whether any of you three who know
how to spell cat have learnt how to read a
whole group of words when
they are strung together in a sentence?"
-"하나 물어볼게," 그녀가 입을 열었다.
"혹시 너희 셋 중에 문장 전체를 읽을 줄 아는 사람이 있니?"
"I have," Nigel said.
-"저요,"
"So have I," Lavender said.
-"저도요,"
Miss Honey went to the blackboard
and wrote with her white chalk the sentence,
I have already begun to learn how to read long sentences.
-허니 선생님은 흰 분필을 들고 칠판에다가 [나는 이미 긴 문장을 읽는 법을 배웠다]라고 썼다.

- She had purposely made it difficult and she knew
that there were precious few five-year-olds around
who would be able to manage it.
-그녀는 일부로 어려운 문제를 냈고 그녀는 이를 읽어낼 수 있는
몇몇 천재적인 아이가 그녀 주위에 있음을 알았다.
"Can you tell me what that says, Nigel?" she asked.
-"뭐라고 썼는지 읽을 수 있겠니, 니겔?"
"That's too hard," Nigel said.
-"너무 어려워요," 니겔이 말했다.
"Lavender?"
-"라벤더?"
"The first word is I," Lavender said.
-"첫 번째 단어는 I예요,"
"Can any of you read the whole sentence?"
Miss Honey asked, waiting for the "yes"
that she felt certain was going to come from Matilda.
-"혹시 누구 이거 다 읽을 수 있는 사람 있니?"
마틸다가 "네"라고 말할 것을 확신했고,
그 말이 나오기를 기다리며 허니 선생님이 물어보았다.

- "Yes," Matilda said.

"Go ahead," Miss Honey said.

Matilda read the sentence without any hesitation at all.
-마틸다는 문장 전체를 단 한 번도 더듬지 않고 읽었다.
"That really is very good indeed," Miss Honey said,
making the understatement of her life.
-"잘 읽었어," 그녀가 칭찬을 되도록 참으려 애쓰며 말했다.
"How much can you read, Matilda?"
-"어느 정도로 읽을 수 있니?"

- "I think I can read most things, Miss Honey,"
Matilda said, "although I'm afraid
I can't always understand the meanings."
-마틸다가 "아마도 거의 모든 문장을 다 읽을 수는 있을 것 같아요,
다만 그 뜻은 모르겠지만요, 선생님." 이라고 말했다.
Miss Honey got to her feet and walked smartly out of the room,
but was back in thirty seconds carrying a thick book.
-허니 선생님은 의자에서 일어나 경보로 교실을 나가,
30초도 채 되지 않아 두꺼운 책을 들고 왔다.
She opened it at random and placed it on Matilda's desk.
-그녀는 책을 아무 데나 펼치고 마틸다의 책상 위에다 놓았다.
"This is a book of humorous poetry," she said.
-"이건 익살스러운 시들을 모아 놓은 시집이야," 그녀는 말했다.

- "See if you can read that one aloud."

Smoothly, without a pause and at a nice speed,
Matilda began to read:
-부드럽게, 멈추지 않고, 적당한 속도로 마틸다가 읽었다.
"An epicure dining at Crewe
Found a rather large mouse in his stew.
Cried the waiter, 'Don't shout
And wave it about
Or the rest will be wanting one too.'"

-"한 미식가가 식사를 하는데
국 냄비에 커다락 쥐 한 마리가 빠져 있었다.
웨이터가 소리치며 하는 말이,
'소리 지르지도 말고
흔들지도 마요.
그랬다간 다른 사람들도 쥐를 달라고 할 테니.'"

- Several children saw the funny side of the rhyme and laughed.
-몇몇 아이들이 재미있는 라임을 보고 깔깔 웃었다.
Miss Honey said, "Do you know what an epicure is, Matilda?"
-허니 선생님이 물었다."너 epicure가 뭔지 아니, 마틸다?"
"It is someone who is dainty with his eating," Matilda said.
-"고상하고 우아하게 식사하는 사람들이요,"
"That is correct," Miss Honey said.
-"맞았어," 허니 선생님이 말했다.
"And do you happen to know what that particular type of poetry is called?"
-그러면 넌 이런 형태의 시는 뭐라고 하는지 아니?"
"It's called a limerick," Matilda said.
-"limerick(5행속요)요,"
"That's a lovely one. It's so funny."
-"전 5행속요를 아주 좋아해요. 엄청 재밌거든요."
"It's a famous one," Miss Honey said,
picking up the book and returning to
her table in front of the class.
-"그건 아주 유명한 시란다," 허니 선생님이 책을 집어들고 교실 앞쪽에 있는 교탁으로 돌아가며 말했다.

- "A witty limerick is very hard to write," she added.
-"재치있는 속요는 쓰기가 힘들어요," 그녀가 덧붙였다.
"They look easy but they most certainly are not."
-"쉬워 보이지만 확실히, 대부분은 어렵답니다."
"I know," Matilda said.
-"알아요," 마틸다가 말했다.
"I've tried quite a few times but mine are never any good."
-"저도 몇 번 써 보았지만 제가 쓴 건 아무래도 별로였어요."
"You have, have you" Miss Honey said, more startled than over.
-"너 해 봤니, 해 봤지?"허니 선생님이 그 전보다 더 놀라며 물었다.
"Well, Matilda, I would very much like to hear
one of these limericks you say you have written.
-"음, 마틸다, 난 네가 속요를 써 본 적이 있다는 게 맘에 든단다
Can you try to remember one for us?"
-한 번 하나 기억해서 해 보겠니?"
"Well," Matilda said, hesitating,
"I've actually trying to make up one about you,
Miss Honey, while we've been sitting here."
"음..." 마틸다가 망설이며 말했다.
"사실 우리가 여기 앉아 있을 때 선생님에 관하여 썼거든요."

-"나?"
"Well, we've certainly got to hear that one, haven't we?"
-"그럼, 그 시를 꼭 들어봐야겠네."
"I don't think I want to say it, Miss Honey."
-"전 안 했으면 좋겠는데요,"
"Please tell it," Miss Honey said.
-"제발 해 보렴."
"I promise I won't mind."
-"어떤 내용이던 괜찮아."
"I think you will, Miss Honey,
because I have to use your first name to make things
rhyme and that's why I don't want to say it."
-"안 좋아하실 거에요,
왜냐하면 제가 선생님의 이름을 라임(운율)을 만들 때 썼기 때문이에요."
"How do you know my first name?" Miss Honey asked.
-"어떻게 내 이름을 알아?"

- "I heard another teacher calling you by it
just before we came in," Matilda said.
-"다른 선생님이 선생님을 그렇게 부르는 걸 들어오기 직전에 들었어요,"
"She called you Jenny."
-"그 분은 선생님을 제니라고 불렀어요."
"I insist upon hearing this limerick," Miss Honey said,
smiling one of her rare smiles.
-"그 시를 꼭 들어보고 싶구나,"
허니 선생님이 보일 듯 말 듯 한 미소를 지으며 말했다.
"Stand up and recite it."
-"일어서서 낭독해 보렴.
Reluctantly Matilda stood up and very slowly,
very nervously, she recited her limerick:
-마지못해 마틸다는 일어서서 안절부절 못 하며 아주 천천히 시를 낭독했다.
"The thing we all ask about Jenny
Is, 'Surely there cannot be many
Young girls in the place
With so lovely a face?'
The answer to that is, 'Not any!'"
-"우리 모두 제니를 보고 궁금한 것은
'이곳엔 그처럼 얼굴이 예쁜 여학생이 있을까?'
이 질문에 대한 답은, '한 명도 없지!'"
