- Some curious warmth that was almost tangible
shone out of Miss Honey's face when she spoke
to a confused and homesick newcomer to the class.
-모든 게 낯설고 혼란스럽고, 집에 가고픈 신입생들에게 이야기를 할 때 허니 선생님의 얼굴은 온화했다.
Miss Trunchbull, the Headmistress, was something else altogether.
-트런치불 교장은 전적으로 달랐다.
She was a gigantic holy terror, a fierce tyrannical monster
who frightened the life out of the pupils and teachers alike.
-그는 오금이 저릴 정도로 무서웠으며, 학생 선생 할 것 없이 모두를 공포에 떨게 하는 폭군이었다.
There was an aura of menace about her even at a distance,
and when she came up close you could almost feel
the dangerous heat radiating from her as from a red-hot rod of metal.
-교장 선생님에게서 멀리에 떨어져 있어도 위압적인 오라가 뿜어져 나왔고, 가까이 다가오면, 새빨갛게 달궈진 쇠막대에서 나오는 것만 같은 위험할 정도의 열기가 느껴졌다.

- When she marched-Miss Trunchbull never walked,
she always marched like a storm-trooper with long strides
and arms aswinging-when she marched along a corridor
you could actually hear her snorting as she went,
and if a group of children happened to be in her path,
she ploughed right on through them like a tank,
with small people bouncing off her to left and right.
-교장 선생님은 결코 걷지를 않았다. 그녀는 언제나 마치 나치 돌격대원이 행군하는 것 같이 성큼성큼, 팔을 앞뒤로 휙휙 흔들며 걸었다. 사람들은 교장 선생님이 옆을 지나갈 때 콧김을 훅훅 내뿜는 소리를 들을 수 있었다. 그리고 만약, 어쩌다가 교장 선생님이 가는 길에 아이들이 떼지어 있으면, 탱크처럼 똑바로 돌진하기 때문에 조그마한 아이들은 좌우로 마구 튕겨져 나왔다.
Thank goodness we don't meet many people like her in this world,
although they do exist and all of us are likely
to come across at least one of then in a lifetime.
-우리가 그런 사람을 만나기 드물다는 게 천만다행이다. 비록 이런 사람들이 세상에는 존재하고, 평생에 적어도 한 명 정도와는 마주치겠지만.

This woman, in all her eccentricities and in her appearance,
it almost impossible to describe,
but I shall make some attempt to do so a little later on.

Let us leave her for the moment and go back to Matilda
and her first day in Miss Honey's class.

- After the usual business of going through all the names of the
children, Miss Honey handed out a brand-new exercise-book to each pupil.

"You have all brought your own pencils, I hope," she said.
-"모두들 연필 가져왔죠?"
"Yes, Miss Honey," they chanted.

"Good. Now this is the very first day of school for each one of you.

It is the beginning of at least eleven long years of schooling
that all of you are going to have to go through.

who gets out of line in this school.

"Yes, Miss Honey," chirruped eighteen eager little voices.

as much as possible while you are in this class.

- Matilda put up her hand.
-마틸다가 손을 들었다.
She was the only one.
-오직 그녀뿐이었다.
Miss Honey looked carefully at the tiny girl with dark hair
and a round serious face sitting in the second row.
-허니 선생님은 두 번째 줄에 앉은, 진지한 표정을 짓고 있는
흑발의 여자아이를 주의깊게 쳐다보았다.
"Wonderful," she said.
-"훌륭해,"
"Please stand up and recite as much of it as you can."
-일어서서 네가 알고 있는 데까지 해 보렴."
Matilda stood up and began to say the two-times table.
-마틸다는 일어서서 십이 단을 외우기 시작했다.
When she got to twice twelve is twenty-four she didn't stop.
-2 곱하기 12는 24라고 하고 나서도 멈출 기미가 없었다.
She went right on with twice thirteen is twenty-six,
twice fourteen is twenty-eight, twice fifteen is thirty,
twice sixteen is...
-2곱하기 13은 26, 2곱하기 14는 28, 2곱하기 15는 30, 2곱하기 16은..."
"Stop!" Miss Honey said.
-"그만."
She had been listening silghtly spellbound to this smooth recital,
and now she said, "How far can you go?"
-선생님은 유창한 암송에 약간 홀린 듯 앉아 있다가 말했다.
"얼마나 많이 외울 수 있니?"

- "How far?" Matilda said.
-"얼마나 많이냐고요?"
"Well, I don't really know, Miss Honey.
-"글쎄, 잘 모르겠네요, 선생님.
For quite a long way, I think."
-꽤 많이 할 것 같네요."
Miss Honey took a few moments to let this curious statement sink in.
-호기심을 불러일으키는 마틸다의 대답을
허니 선생님이 이해하는 데에는 어느 정도 시간이 필요했다.
"You mean," she said, "that you could tell me
what two times twenty-eight is?"
-"네 말은 네가 2곱하기 28이 뭔지 답할 수 있다는 거니?"
"Yes, Miss Honey."
-"네, 선생님."
"What is it?"
-"얼만데?"
"FIfty-six, Miss Honey."
-"56이요."
"What about something much harder,
like two times four hundred and eighty-seven?
-"2곱하기 487같이 좀 더 어려운 건 어떨까?
Could you tell me that?"
-답할 수 있겠니?"
"I think so, yes," Matilda said.
-"그렇게 생각해요."
"Are you sure?"
-"진심이니?"
"Why yes, Miss Honey, I'm fairly sure.
-"그럼요, 선생님.

- "What is it then, two times four hundred and eighty-seven?"
-"그러면 2 곱하기 487은 몇이니?"
"Nine hundred and seventy-four," Matilda said immediately.
-"974요," 마틸다가 즉답했다.
She spoke quietly and politely and without any sign of showing off.
-그녀는 조용하고 공손하게, 우쭐하는 기색 없이 말했다.
Miss Honey gazed at Matilda with absolute amazement,
but when next she spoke she kept her voice level.
-허니 선생님은 엄청나게 놀란 기색으로 마틸다를 뚫어지게 쳐다보았지만
그 다음 그녀는 목소리를 가다듬고 말했다.
"That is really splendid," she said.
-"진짜 대단하구나."
"But of course multiplying by two is a lot easier
than some of the bigger numbers.
-하지만 당연히 2단은 더 큰 숫자들의 곱셈보다 훨씬 쉽지.
What about the ther multiplication tables?
-그러면 다른 수의 곱셈들도 외울 수 있니?
Do you know any of those?

"What I mean is do you for instance know the three-times table?"
-"내가 한 말은, 네가 지금 당장 3단을 외울 수 있니?"
"Yes, Miss Honey."
-"네, 선생님."
"And the four times?"
-"4단도?"
"Yes, Miss Honey."
-"네, 선생님."
"Well, how many do you know, Matilda?
-"그러면 어디까지 아니, 마틸다?

"Eighty-four," Matilda said.

Miss Honey paused and leaned back in her chair
behind the plain table that stood
in the middle of the floor in front of the class.
-교실 앞쪽에 있는 교탁 뒤에 앉은 허니 선생님은
경직되어 의자에 등을 기대었다.
She was considerably shaken by this exchange
but took care not to show it.
-지금까지의 문답에 충격을 받아 몸이 후들거렸지만 내색하지 않으려 했다.
She had never come across a five-tear-old before,
or indeed a ten-year-old, who could multiply such facility.-허니 선생님은 그렇게 곱셈을 능숙하게 하는 다섯 살,
심지어 열 살 조차도 만나본 적이 없었던 것이다.

"Matilda is a very lucky girl.
-"마틸다는 아주 운 좋은 아이예요.
She has wonderful parents
who have already taught her to multiply lots of numbers.
-마틸다는 벌써 아주 큰 수의 곱셈도 가르친 훌륭한 부모님을 두고 있어요.
Was it your mother, Matilda, who taught you?"
-어머니께서 가르치셨니?"
"No, Miss Honey, it wasn't."
-"아뇨."
"You must have a great father then.
-"그러면 아버지겠구나.
He must be a brilliant teacher."
-그분은 훌륭한 선생님임이 틀림없어."
"No, Miss Honey," Matilda said quitely.
-"아니에요."
"My father did not teach me."
-"아빠가 가르쳐 주지 않았어요."
