"has a nasty habit of guessing.
-"교장 선생님은 추측이라는 고약한 습관이 있어.
When she doesn't know who the culprit is,
she makes a guess at it,
and the trouble is she's often right.

- "Only yesterday the Trunchbull caught a boy
called Julius Rottwinkle eating Liquorice Allsorts
during the scripture lesson and
she simlpy picked him up by one arm and
flung him clear out of the open classroom window.
-"어제만 해도 그녀는 성경공부 시간에 감초 사탕을 먹던
율리우스 로트윙클이라는 남자애를 한 팔로 들어 올려서
열려 있던 창 밖으로 깨끗히 날려 버렸어.
Our classroom is one floor up and
we saw Julius Rottwinkle go sailing out
over the garden like a Frisbee and
landing with a thump in the middle of the lettuces.
-교실을 2층이었고 우린 율리우스가 프리즈비처럼
정원 너머로 날아가 상추밭 한가운데에 쿵 하고 떨어지는 걸 보았지.

"Did this Julius Rottwinkle break any bones?"
Lavender asked.
-"뼈 안 부러졌어요?"
"Only a few," Hortensia said.

"You've got to remember that
the Trunchbull once threw the hammer
for Britain in the Olympics so
she's very proud of her fight arm."
-"그녀가 한때 영국 올림픽에서 해머 던지기를 해서
오른팔에 대해 자부심이 있다는 걸 알아둬야 해."

Lavender asked.

"The hammer," Hortensia said,
"is actually a ruddy great cannon-ball
on the end of a long bit of wire,
and the thrower whisks it round
and roung his of her head faster
and faster and then lets it go.
-"해머는 긴 쇠줄 끝에 묶인 포환인데,
선수는 이 포환을 머리 위에서
빠르게, 더 빠르게 돌리다가 딱 줄을 놓는 거야.
You have to be terrifically strong.

Hortensia went on, "that a large boy is about
the same weight as an Olympic hammer
and therefore he's very useful for practising with."
-"언제 한 번 들은 건데,"
호텐시아는 말을 이었다.
"큰 남자애는 올림픽 해머와 무게가 같아 연습에 안성맞춤이래."

- At that point something strange happened.

The playground,
which up to then had been filled
with shrieks and the shouting of children
at play, all at once became silent as the grave.

운동장이 순식간에 묘지처럼 고요해졌다.
"Watch out," Hortensia whispered.
-"조심해," 호텐시아가 귓속말했다.
Matilda and Lavender glanced round
and saw the gigantic figure of
Miss Trunchbull advancing through the crowd
of boys and girls with menacing strides.
-마틸다와 라벤더는 위협적인 걸음거리로
아이들 사이를 비집고 걸어오는 교장 선생님의 아주 큰 덩치를 보았다.

to let her through and her progress across
the asplalt was like that of Moses
going through the Red Sea when the waters parted.
-아이들은 덤벙대면서 물러났고

A formidable fighre she was too,
in her belted smock and green breeches.

"Hold your hats," Hortensia whispered.
-"놀라지 마," 그녀가 귓속말했다.

Hortensia said,
"has let her long hair grow even longer
during the hols and her mother
has plaited it into pigtails.
-"저 멍청한 아만다가 방학에
머리를 더 길러서 엄마가 머리를 땋았어.
Silly thing to do."
-멍청한 짓이지."
"Why silly?" Matilda asked.
-"왜?"
