- Driving to Anchorage
March 27, 1964, was a day that Lois would never forget. It started as an ordinary day. However, things quickly became very different.
Lois was a member of the Inuit tribe. That day, her tribe was having a festival. The festival was in the city of Anchorage, Alaska. It was several miles from the small cabin where Lois and her Grandpa lived. Grandpa complained a little about driving the car all way to Anchorage. It was a long drive. Then they needed to drive through the city itself to meet Lois's brother, Paul, before they went to the festival.
1964년 3월 27일은 로이스가 절대로 잊지 못할 날이었다.
시작은 여느 때처럼 평범했으나, 일들은 빠르게, 그리고 매우 달라졌다.

- Grandpa sang as he drove.

He sang so loudly that Lois could not hear the sound of the tires on the rocky dirt road.

Maybe that was what Lois and Grandpa did not hear the strange humming sound in the air either.

Afher a while, they turned onto the main road to Anchorage.

Lois knew people could surf on water.

Now it felt like the car was surfing on the road!

It moved up and down like it was on the waves in the ocean.

- Trees popped out of the ground.

The dirt on the side of the road fell away.

Lois could see the roots of the trees.

The ground trembled, but the car kept going.
-땅은 요동쳤지만 차는 그대로 가고 있었다.
"Stop the car!" Lois shouted.
-"차를 멈춰요!" 로이스는 소리쳤다.
Grandpa could not hear her.
-할아버지는 그녀의 말을 듣지 못했다.
There was a roar that sounded like a train riding under them.
-그들의 아래에서는 기차소리같은 굉음이 울리고 있었다.
The earth sounded like it was screaming.
-마치 지구가 비명을 지르는 것 같았다.
Lois saw other cars drive sideways and smash into each other.
-로이스는 다른 자동차들이 옆으로 움직이며 서로를 들이받는 것을 보았다.
It was like a wild ride at the county fair.

- Lois screamed.
-로이스는 비명을 질렀다.
Her grandfather could not control the car.
-그녀의 할아버지는 차를 제어할 수 있었다.
She could not help him.

Around them, cars slid and people fell.
-그녀의 주변에서는 자들이 미끌어졌고 사람들이 떨어졌다.
They kept driving even as the cracks in the road got bigger and bigger.

Then Lois heard a huge howling noise.

0ne side of the road fell.

A huge slab of the road went down into a big hole.
-도로의 커다란 조각이 커다란 구멍으로 떨어졌다.
The slab took Lois, her grandfather, and more cars down into the hole with it.
-그 조각은 로이스와 그녀의 할아버지, 그리고 다른 차들과 같이 떨어졌다.

Lois saw the land change right in front of her eyes.

Houses moved down the road beside them.

Some houses slid down the hill.
-몇몇 집들은 언덕 아래로 미끄러져 내려갔다.
A few houses rolled over and broke into pieces.
-또 몇몇은 굴러서 산산조각이 났다.
Water pipes broke.
-수도관은 부서졌다.
The shaking pulled electric and gas lines out of the ground and now they hung in the air.
-그 흔들림에 전기와 가스 선이 땅 밖으로 나왔고 공중에서 몸부림쳤다.
Water and sparks sprayed into the air, too.
-물과 스파크들도 공중에 흩뿌려졌다.
The sky filled with smoke.
-하늘은 연기로 가득찼다.
Lois saw fire in the wreckage of broken buildings everywhere.
-로이스는 흩뿌려진 부서진 건물들 파편에서 불이 나는 것을 보았다.

- Everything seemed like it was happening slowly.

Grandpa stopped driving, but the car kept moving.

Then the car hit the ground.
-그리고 차는 지면을 들이받았다.
Lois and Grandpa bounced hard in their seats.
-로이스와 할아버지는 좌석에서 요동쳤다.
Grandpa hit his head in the roof of the car.
-할아버지는 차의 지붕에 머리를 찧었다.
The ground still shook.
-땅은 여전히 흔들렸다.
The howling noise continued.
-굉음은 계속 났다.
Lois looked out the window.
-로이스는 창 밖을 내다보았다.
She saw the water in the bay.
-그녀는 만의 물을 보았다.
It was much closer to the road than it was before the shaking started.
-물은 땅이 흔들리기 전보다 더 길과 가까이 있었다.
Water rushed toward them.

- Lois saw a big hole in the bay.

It looked like water going down a big drain in a bathtub.

Then mud shot up from the bottom of the bay.
-진흙이 만의 바닥에서 솟아올랐다.
A few houses fell into the hole.
-몇몇 집들은 구멍으로 떨어졌다.
They fell so deep that Lois only saw their rooftops.
-너무 깊이 떨어져서 로이스가 지붕밖에 볼 수 없었다.
She knew people had lost all the possessions that they owned.

She looked at the broken water pipes and the telephone poles that hung from their wires.

Bricks popped off buildings like popcorn.

Rubble was everywhere.

Then the terrible noise stopped.
-그때, 굉음이 잦아들었다.
Suddenly, everything was very quiet.
