    - A NEW SCHOOL for Chris
    "Are you nervous?"asked Mom.

    "No,"said Chris cheerfully

Maybe Chris was a little nervous

Would his new school be different than

his other school? Would it be the same?

Mom took Chris to shool. Mom and

Chris met Ms. Clark, the principal. She took

Chris to his classroom. His new teacher, Mr.

Greene, asked the class to say hello to Chris.

    "Hello!"everybody said.

Mr. Greene gave Chris a math book. Then

Chris sat down at his new desk. The girl next

to him helped him find the right page.

The children were learning to measure

how long things are. Mr. Greene gave Chris

a ruler. The children measured things in the

classroom. Chris measured his foot. It was

    seven inches (17.8cm) long.

Next, the children had reading. Students

read parts of a story out loud. It was about

Dogs make great pests They are

easy to train They are smart and

loyal Dogs are good workers, too

There are many jobs that dogs do that

    help people in different ways

    Sled Dogs

Some dogs have a love for pulling and

carrying They are big and strong. So

they are built for this kind of work.

In snowy places, people use dogs

to pull sleds. Sled dogs work and over

race, too They practice over and over

for the races. At times, their legs can

start to quiver, or shake. But they keep

    practicing.

    Farm Dogs

Farmers use dogs to help them herd

farm animals. The dogs follow orders

well. They are trained to run in circles

around the sheep The farmer gives

the order, and the dog circles the sheep

This frightens the sheep and causes them

    to stick together.

Some dogs help farmers move cattle

from one place to another. The dogs

run next to the herd to keep them

moving If a cow wallks off the dog may

snap at the cow or nip at its heels to

make sure it stays with the group.

These dogs the ability to find

things by smelling them. They track

    down criminals

a mouse. The mouse had lost his bicycle.

    Mr. Greene asked them questions

about the story. Chris raised his hand.

He answered one of the questions.

The bell rang. It was time for recess!

    Everyone ran outside. Some children

played tag. Chris wanted to pley, too.

A boy from his class waved to Chris

The boy asked Chris to play. Chris played

    the game, too.

The children played until the bell

rang again. Then, they retured to their

classroom. Mr. Greene talked about words
