"I told you we were bobbing up and down," the Ladybug said.
나는 우리가 위아래로 일렁거리고 있다고 말했잖아요 무당벌레가 말했다.
"We`re in the middle of the sea!" cried James.
우리는 바다 한가운데에 있어요 Jame가 소리쳤다.

그리고 정말 그랬다.
A strong current and a high wind had carried the peach so quickly away from the shore that carried the peach so quickly away from the shore that already the land was out of sight.
강한 물살과 높은 바람이 복숭아를 해안가로부터 벗어나도록 아주 빠르게 움직여서 이미 땅은 보이지 않았다.
All around them lay the vast black ocean, deep and hungry.

- Little waves were bibbling against the sides of the peach.
작은 파도들이 그 복숭아의 가장자리에 가까이 붙어 철썩 거리고 있었다.
"But how did it happen?" they cried.
하지만 이 일이 어떻게 일어난거야? 그들은 소리질렀다.
"Where are the fields?"
그 들판은 어디있지?
Where are the woods?
그 숲은 어디있지?
Where is England?"
영국은 어디있지?
Nobody, not even James, could understand how in the world a thing like this could have come about.
아무도, 심지어 James조차 대체 어떻게 이 일이 일어났는지에 대해 이해하지 못했다.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the Old-Green-Grasshopper said, trying very hard to keep the fear and disappointment out of his voice.
신사 숙녀 여러분, 그 늙은 초록 메뚜기는 말했다, 그의 목소리에서 공포와 실망감을 드러내지 않기 위해 매우 노력하며 말했다.

- "I am afraid that we find ourselves in a rather awkward situation."
유감스럽지만 우리는 꽤 어색한 상황에 있다는것을 알수있어
"Awkward!" cried the Earthworm.
불편해! 지렁이는 소리쳤다.
"My dear Old Grasshopper, we are finished!
늙은 메뚜기야 우리는 끝났어
Every one of us is about to perish!
우리는 모두 죽을거야!
I may be blind, you know, but that much I can see quite clearly!"
나는 맹인일것이야 너도 알잖아 그러나 나는 꽤 또렷하게 볼수있어!
"Off with my boots!" shouted the Centipede.
부츠좀 벗겨줘 그 지네는 소리쳤다.
"I cannot swim with my boots on!"
나는 나의 부츠로 수영할수 없어!

- "I can`t swim at all!" cried the Ladybug.
나도 수영 전혀 못해! 무당벌레가 소리쳤다.
"Nor can I," wailed the Glow worm .
나도 전혀 반딧불이가 울부짖었다.
"Nor I!" said Miss spider.
나도 못한다고 거미씨가 말했다.
"None of us three girls can swim a single stroke."
우리 3명의 여자 어느 누구도 수영을 못해
"But you woon`t have to swim," said James calmly.
그러나 당신은 수영할 필요가 없을꺼예요 James는 침착하게 말했다.
"We are floating beautifully.
우리는 아름답게 떠있어요
And sooner or later a ship is bound to come along and pick us up."
그리고 조만간 배가 와서 우리를 반드시 구조해줄꺼예요

- They all stared at him in amazement.
그들은 모두 그를 놀란채로 바라보았다.
"Are you qiote sure that we are not sinking?" the Ladybug asked.
우리가 가라 앉지 않을꺼라고 넌 정말 생각하니? 그 무당벌레는 물어보았다.
"Of course I`m sure," answered James.
물론이지 나는 확신해 James는 대답했다.
"Go and look for yourselves."

그들은 모두 복숭아 주변으로 달려갔다. 그리고 아래 물을 내려다 보았다.
"The boy is quite right," the Old Green Grasshopper said.
그 소년은 확실해 그 늙은 초록 메뚜기는 말했다.
"We are floating beautifully."

- Now we must all sit down and keep perfectly calm.
자 우리는 앉아야한다 그리고 완전 침착해야한다
Everything will be all right in the end."
모든것은 마침내 괜찮아질것이야.
"What absolute nonsense!" cried the Earthworm.
완전 터무니없는 생각이야! 지렁이는 소리쳤다.
"Nothing is ever all right in the end, and well you know it!"
아무것도 결국엔 잘되지않아, 그리고 너는 그것을 잘 알잖아!
"Poor Earthworm," the Ladybug said, whispering in James`s ear.
불쌍한 지렁이. 그 무당벌레는 말했다. James의 귀에 속삭이듯 말했다.
"He loves to make everything into a disaster.
그는 모든것을 재앙으로 만드는것을 좋아해
He hates to be happy.
그는 행복한것을 싫어해

- He is only happy when he is gloomy.
그는 그가 우울할때 행복해한다.
Now isn`t that odd?
지금 이상하지않니?
But then, I suppose just being an Earthworm is enough to make a person pretty gloomy, don`t you agree?"
그러나 그때 나는 지렁이가 된다는 거 자체가 한 사람을 꽤 우울하게 하기엔 충분하지 그렇지 않니?
"If this peach is not going to sink,"the Earthworm was saying,"and if we are not going to be drowned, then every one of us is going to starve to death instead.
민약 이 복숭아가 가라않지 않으면, 그 지렁이는 말했다 그리고 만약 우리가 익사하지않으면, 그땐 우리모두 굶어죽게 될거야
Do you relize that we haven`t had a thing to eat since yesterday morning?"
우리가 어제아침부터 아무것고 안먹은거 알고있지?
"By golly, he`s right," cried the Centipede.
저런, 그는 맞아 지네는 소리쳤다.
"For once, Earthworm is right!"
이번에는 지네가 맞아 !

"And we`re not likely to find anything around here either.
그리고 또한 여기 주위에서 어떤 것도 발견하지 못해
We shall get thinner and thinner and thirstier and thirster.
우리는 점점 말라가고 점점 목마라할거야
And we shakk akk die a slow and girsly death from starvation.
그리고 우리는 배고픔으로 천천히 소름끼치게 죽어가겠지
I am dying already.
나는 이미 죽어가고 있어
I am slowly shriveling up for want of food.
나는 천천히 음식을 원하면서 말라가고있지
Personally, I would rather drown."

하지만 맙소사, 너는 맹인임에 틀림없어! James는 말했다.
"You know very well I`m blind," snapped the Earthworm.
너는 내가 맹인인것을 매우 잘 알아, 그 지렁이는 술에 취했다.
"There`s no need to rub it in."
그것을 안에서 문지를필요없어.

어떻게 내가 장님인데 볼 수 있냐?
James took a deep,slow breath.
James는 깊고 천천히 숨을 쉬었다.
"Can`t you realize,"he said patiently,"that we have enough food here to last us for weeks and weeks?"
너는 인식할수없어. 그는 침착하게 말했다, "우리가 몇주고 여기서 먹을수 있는 충분한 음식을 가지고있니?
"Where?" they said.
어디? 그들은 말했다.
"Where?"
어디에?
"Why, the peach, of course!
왜 복숭아있잖아!
Our whole ship is made of food!"
우리 배 전체는 음식으로 만들어졌어!

"My dear James," said the Old Green Grasshopper, laying a front leg affectionately on James`s shoulder, "I don`t know what we`d do without you.
James야 늙은 초록 메뚜기가 말했다, 애정어리게 James의 어깨에 앞발을 놓고 난 우리가 너 없이 어떻게 했을지 모르겠어

"We are most certainly not!" said the Earthworm.

You can`t eat the ship!
너는 그 배를 먹을수 없어!
It`s the only thing that is keeping us up!"
이게 우리를 지키는 유일한거야!

우리가 안먹으면 굶어 죽을꺼라고! 지네는 말했다.
"And we shall drown if we do!" cried the Earthworm.
그리고 우리는 굶어 죽을꺼라야! 지렁이는 소리쳤다
"Oh dear, oh dear," said the Old-Grasshopper.
오 이런 이런 늙은 메뚜기는 말했다.
"Now we`re worse off than before!"
지금 우리는 전보다 상황이 안좋아!
"Couldn`t we just eat a little bit of it?" asked Miss Spider.
우리 그냥 조그만 먹으면 안될까? 거미씨는 물었다.
"I am so dreadfully hungry."
나는 정말 죽을듯이 배고파
"You can eat all you want," James answered.
원하는대로 다 드세요 James는 물었다

- "It would take us weeks and weeks to make any sort of a dent in this enormous peach.
이 거대한 복숭아에서 어떤 틈을 만들려면 수십주는 더 걸릴거야
Surely you can see that?"
확실이 알겠지?
"Good heavens, he`s right again!" cried the Old Green Grasshopper, clapping his hands.
이럴수가 그의 말이 또 맞아! 그 늙은초록 메뚜기는 박수치며 외쳤다.
"It would take weeks and weeks!
이건 수십주는 더 걸려
Of course it would!
물로 그렇지
But let`s not go making a lot of holes all over the deck.
그러나 갑판 전체에 너무 많은 구멍을 만들지는 말자구
I think we`d better simply scoop it out of that tunnel over there -the one that we`ve just come up by."
내 생각에는 단지 터널 근처를 떠먹는게 괜찮을것 같아 우리가 바로옆에 있는곳으로
