- "I am a pest!" the Centipede announced, grinning broadly and looking round of that,the Ladybug said, smiling at James.
나는 해충이다! 그 지네는 말했다. 활짝 웃고 둘러본다,그 무당벌레는 James에게 미소를 지으며 말했다.
"Though for the life of me I cannot understand why."
아무리해도 나는 그 이유를 이해할수 없어.
"I am the only pest in this room!" cried the Centipede, still grining away.
나는 이 방에서 유일한 해충이야! 그 지네는 소리쳤다 여전히 활짝 웃는다.
"Unless you count Old-Green-Grasshopper over there.
만약 너가 늙은 초록메뚜기를 저쪽에서 세지않는다면
But he is long past it now.
그러나 그는 지금 그것은 오래된일 이다
He is too old to be a pest any more."
그는 너무 늙어서 아무도 해충이라 할수없다.
The Old- Green-Grasshopper turned his huge black eyes upon the Centipede and gave him a withering look.
그 늙은 초록 메뚜기는 그의 거대한 검은 눈동자들을 지네에게 돌렸고 그는 기죽어 보였다.
"Young fellow,"he said, speaking in a deep, slow, scornful voice,"I have never been a pest in my life.
젊은이 따라와 그는 깊고 천천히 경멸하는 목소리로 말했다, 나는 나의 삶에서 해충을 해본적 없어.
I am a musician."
나는 음악가야
"Hear,hear!" said the Ladybug.

"Your names is James, isn`t it?"
"너의 이름은 James야 , 안그러니?"
"Yes"

"Well, James, have you ever in your life seen such a marvelous colossal Centipede as me?"
"James, 너는 나처럼 너 살면서 나처럼 훌륭하고 거대한 지네를 봤니?
"I certainly haven`t, James answered.
분명히 아니죠. James는 답했다.
"How on earth did you get to be like that?"
대체 어떻게 된거에요?
"Very peculiar," the Centipede said.
매우 이상하네 그 지네는 말했다.
"Very,very peculiar indeed.
정말 매우매우 이상해
Let me tell you what happened.
무신 일인지 말해줘요
I was messing about in the garden under the old peach tree and suddenly a funny little green thing came wriggling past my nose.
나는 오래된 복숭아 나무 밑에서 정원을 엉망으로 만들고 있었고, 갑자기 우스꽝스런 초록 물체들이 내코를 지나서 꿈틀거리기 시작했어.

Bright green it was, and extraordinarily beautiful, and it looked like some kind of a tiny stone or crystal..."
밝은 초록색 그리고 유별스럽게 아름답다 그리고 그것은 아주 작은 돌멩이 혹은 크리스탈 종류같아.
"Oh, but I know what was!" cried James.
오, 그러나 나는 그게 뭔지 알아요!James는 외쳤다.
"It happened to me, too!" said Ladybug.
그거 나한테도 그랬어! 무당벌레가 말했다.
"And me!" Miss spider said.
나도 ! 거미양이 말했다.
"Suddenly there were little green things everywhere!
갑자기 작은 초록물체가 사방에 있었어!
The soil was full of them!"
그 땅이 그것으로 가득했어!
"I actually allowed one!" the Earthworm declared proudly.
나는 사실 하나를 삼켰어! 그 지렁이가 자랑스럽게 선언했다.
"So did I!"the Ladybug said.
나도! 무방벌레가 말했다.
"I swallowed there!" the Centipede cried
나는 세개 삼켰어! 지네가 소리쳤다.
"But who`s telling this story anyway?"
그러나 이 얘기를 누가했니 ?
Don`t interrupt!"
방해하지마!
"It`s too late to tell stories now,"the Old-Green-Grasshopper announced.
지금은 이야기들을 하기 너무 늦었어 그 늙은 초록 메뚜기가 알렸어요
"It`s time to go to sleep."

- "I refuse to sleep in my boots!" the Centipede said.
나는 나의 부츠들을 신고 자지않을거야! 그 지네는 말했다.
"How many more are there to come off, James?"
James, 얼마나 더 벗겨야하니?
"I think i`ve done about twenty so far," James told him.
제 생각에는 지금까지 한 스무짝 정도 벗긴것 같아요 James는 그에게 말했다.
"Them that leaves eighty to go," the Centipede said.
그렇다면 여든짝 남았군. 그 지네는 말했다.
"twenty-two, not eighty!" shrieked the Earthworm.
스물두 짝이야, 여든짝이 아니야! 그 지렁이는 신경질적으로 소리쳤다.
"He`s lying again."
그는 다시 거짓말을 하네.
The Centipede roared with laughter.
그 지네는 크게 웃었다.
"Stop pulling the Earthworm`s leg," the Ladybug said.
다리가지고 지렁이를 놀리는지 마세요 그 무당벌레는 말했다.
This sent the Centipede into hysterics.
그 지네는 자지러지며 웃었다.
"pulling his leg!" he cried, wriggling with glee and pointing at the Earthworm.
그의 다리라고요!(?) 그는 외쳤다. 웃으며 꿈틀거렸다 그리고 그 지렁이를 가리켰다.
"Which leg am I pulling?
어떤 다리요? (?)
You tell me that?"
당신은 나에게 말한거에요?
James decided that he rather liked the Centipede.
James는 그럼에도 불구하고 지네가 마음에 들었다.

- He was obviously a rascal, but what a change it was to hear somebody laughing once in a while.
그는 분명히 짓궃은 악동이다 하지만 오랜만에 누군가의 웃음소리를 들었다.
He had never heard Aunt Sponge or Aunt spiker laughing aloud in all the time he had been with them.
그는 그들과 함께 살면서 Sponge고모나 Spiker고모가 크게 웃는 소리를 들어 본 적이 없었다.

"We really must get some sleep," the Old-Green-Grasshopper said.
우리는 잠을 자 두어야 해 그 늙은 초록 메뚜기가 말했다
"We`ve got a tough day ahead of us tomorrow.
내일 우리에게는 험난한 하루가 일어날거야
So would you be kind enough, Miss spider, to make the beds?"
그러니 거미양 그 침대들을 충분히 만들어 줄수 있어요?
A few minutes later, Miss Spider had made the first bed.
몇분후에, 거미양은 첫번째 침대를 만들었다.
It was hanging from the ceiling, suspended by a rope of threads at either end so that actually it looked more like a hammock than a bed.
첫번째 침대는 양쪽 끝이 실로 천장에 매여 있어 우리가 자는 침대라기 보다는 나뭇가지에 매달아 두는 그물 침대처럼 보였다.
But it was a magnificent affair, and the stuff that it was made of shimmered like silk in the pale light.
그러나 침대를 만드는건 멋진 일이었다 그리고 그것은 희미한 불빛 아래에서 비단 처럼 은은하게 빛내고 있었다.
"I do hope you`ll find it comfortable," Miss Spider said to the Old-Green-Grasshopper.
편하게 쉬세요(?) 거미양은 그 늙은 메뚜기에게 말했다.
"I made it as soft and silky as I possibly could.
가능한 부드럽게 매끄럽게 만들었어요
I spun it with gossamer.
아주 고운 실이에요
That`s a much better quality thread than the one I use for my own web."
제가 거미집을 지을때에 쓰는 것보다 훨씬 더 고급스러운 실로 짰어요."

- "Thank you so much, my dear lady," the Old-Green-Grasshoppper said,
climbling into the hammock.
정말 고마워요 거미양 그 늙은 초록 메뚜기는 말했다 .
"Ah, this is just what I needed.
아, 내가 원하던 것이야
Good night, everybody.Good night."
잘자요 모두들 잘자요
Then Miss Spider spun the next hammock, and the Ladybug got in.
거미양은 그 다음 침대를 짰다 그리고 그 무당벌레가 들어갔다.
After that, she spun a long one for the Centipede,
그 다음으로 그녀는 지네를 위한 긴 침대를 짰다.
and an even longer one for the Earthworm.
그리고 지렁이를 위해서는 훨씬 더 긴 침대를 짜 주었다.
"And how do you like your bed?"she said to James when it came to his turn.
그리고 네 침대는 어떻게 해줄까? 그녀는 제임스가 있는 쪽으로 돌아 말했다
"Hard or soft?"
딱딱하게 부드럽게?
"I like it soft, thank you every very much," James answered.
저는 부드러우면 좋겠어요 정말 감사합니다 제임스가 대답했다.
"For goodness' sake stop staring round the room and get on with my boots!" the Centipede said.
이런 세상에 그 방은 그만 둘러보고 내 부츠나 벗겨! 그 지네는 말했다.
"You and I are never going to get any sleep at this rate!
이런 속도로 하다간 너와 나 잠자기는 글렀어!

어깨 너머로 함부로 집어던지지 말고 말이야
James worked away frantically on the Centipede`s boots.
James는 정신없이 지네의 부츠를 벗기는일에 몰두했다.
Each one had laces that had to be, united and loosened before it could be pulled off,
부츠는 각각 벗기기전에 끝을 풀어야 벗겨지는 부츠였다.
and to make matters wore,
그리고 오래걸릴것 같았다.
all the laces were tied up in the most complicated knots that had to be unpicked with fingernails.
그 모든 매듭 하나하나는 상당히 복잡하게 있어서 손톱을 써서 풀어야만 했다.
It was just awful.
정말 끔찍했다 .
It took about two hours.
두시간 쯤 걸렸다.
And by the time James had pulled off the last boot of all and ahad lined them up in a row on the floor- twenty- one pairs althogether-the Centipede was fast asleep.
그리고 James가 마지막 부츠를 잡아당겨 벗겨서 마룻바닥에 스물 한켤레를 나란히 정리해 둘 때쯤에 지네는 곤히 잠들었다.
"Wake up, Centipede," whispered James,
일어나세요 지네. James는 속삭였다.
giving him a gentle dig in the stomack.
그의 배부분을 가볍게 건드리며 속삭였다.
"It`s time for bed."
잠자리에 드셔야죠
"Thank you, my dear child," the Centipede said, opening his eyes
고맙구나 꼬마야, 즈네는 눈을 뜨며 말했다

- Then he got down off the sofa and ambled across the room and crawled into his hammock.
그는 소파에서 내려와 복숭아 안을 가로질러 자기의 침대에 기어들어갔다.
James got into his own hammock
James도 자기 침대로 올라갔다.
and oh, how soft and comfortable it was compared with the hard bare boards that his aunts had always mad him sleep upon at home.
그리고 아, 두 고모가 매일매일 제임스에게 누워 자라고 했던 딱딱한 나무판자 침대와 비교하면 폭신하고 편안했다.
"Lights out," said the Centipede drowsily.
불꺼줘 그 지네는 졸린소리로 말했다
Nothing happened.
아무일도 일어나지 않았다.
"Turn out the light!" he called, raising his voice.
불 꺼줘! 그는 목소리를 높였다.
James glanced round the room, wondering which of the other he might be taking to, but they were all alseep.
James는 지네가 도대체 누구에게 말하고 있는지 궁굼해서 복숭아 안을 휘휘 둘러보았지만 모두 잠들어 있었다.
The Old- Green- Grasshopper was snoring loudly through his nose.
그 늙은 초록 메뚜기는 크게 그의 코를 골고 있었다.
The Ladybug was making whisting noises as she breathed,
그 무당벌레는 그의 숨소리를 내고 있었다
and the Earthworm was coiled up like spring at one end of his hammock, wheezing and blowing through his open mouth.
그리고 그 지렁이는 용수철처럼 몸을 감고 입을 벌린채 침대 구석에서 잠들어 있었다.

As for Miss Spider,
거미양에 대해서는
she had made a lovely web for herself across one corner of the room,
그녀는 방 건너편 구석에 있는 아름다운 거미집에서
and James could see her coruching right in the very center of it
mumbling softly in her dreams.
그리고 James는 그녀가 꿈을꾸는지 거미집 한가운데에서 중얼중얼 잠꼬대를 하며 웅크리고 있었다 (??)
"I said turn out the light!" shouted the Centipede angrily.
불 끄라고 내가 말했잖아! 화가 난 그지네는 소리쳤다.

- "Are you talking to me?" James asked him.
나에게 말하는거에요? James는 그에게 물었다.
"Of course I`m not talking to you, you ass!" the Centipede answered.
물론 너한테 말하는건 아니야 이 멍청아 그 지네는 답했다.
"That crazy Glow- worm has gone to sleep with her light on!"
정신없는 반딧불이가 불을 켜 놓은 채 잠이 들어 버렸다고!
For the first time since entering the room,
그 방에 들어온뒤에 처음으로 제임스는 천장을 올려다보았다.
James glanced up at the ceiling and there he saw a most extraordinary sight.
James는 정말 특이한고 보기드믄것을 보았다.
Something that looked like a gigantic fly without wings was standing upside down upon its six legs in the middle of the ceiling
날가개 없는 거대한 파리처럼 생겼고 다리 여섯개에 천장 한가운데에 거꾸로 매달려 있었다.
And the tail end of his creature seemed to be literally on fire.
그리고 그 꼬리 끝 부분은 그대로 마치 불이 붙은 듯 했다.
A brilliant greenish light as bright as the brightest electric bulb was shining out of its tail and lighting up the whole room.
가장 밝은 전구 불만큼 환하게 반짝거리는 초록 불빛이 그 꼬리에서 퍼져 나와 복숭아 안을 비추고 있었다.
"Is that a Glow- Worm?"asked James,
저분이 반딧불이인가요? James는 물었다.
staring at the light.

제가 보기에는 어떤 벌레도 아닌것 같은데요.
"At least that`s what she calls herself.
적어도 그녀는 그녀스스로 그렇게 부르고 이써
Although actually you are quite right.
비록 너의 말이 맞기도 해
She isn`t really a worm at all.
그녀는 절대 벌레는 아니야
Glow- Worms are never worms.
반딧불이는 절대 벌레가 아니거든
They are simply lady fireflies without wings.
그저 불빛을 내는 파리일 뿐이야 날개는 없지만.
Wake up,
일어나
You lazy beast!"
이 게으름뱅이 반딧불이야!
But the Glow-Worm didin`t sir,
그러나 그 반딧불이는 꿈쩍도 하지 않았다.
so the Centipede reached out if his hammock and picked up one of his boots from the floor.
그래서 그 지네는 침대에 누운채 손을 뻗어서 마룻바닥에서 부츠를 집어들었다
"Put out that wretched light!" he shouted,
그 끔찍한 불좀 끄라니까! 그는 소리쳤다.
hurling the boot up at the ceiling.
그 부츠르 들어 천장에 내던졌다

The Glow-Worm slowly opened on eye and started at the Centipede.
그 반딧불이는 천천히 한쪽눈을 뜨고 지네를 내려다봤다.
"There is no need to be rude,"she said coldly.
그렇게 무례하게 굴 필요는 없잖아요 그녀는 냉담하게 말했다
"All in good time."
다 때가 있는 법인데.
"Come on,come on, come on!" shouted the Centipede.
자자 어서 이리와 그 지네는 소리쳤다.
"Or I`ll put it out for you!"
안그러면 내가 대시 꺼 버릴거야 !
"Oh hellow, James!" the Glow-Worm said,
오 안녕 James! 그 반딧불이는 말했다.
looking down and giving James a little wave and a smile.
아래를 내려보고 James에게 살짝 손을 흔들며 미소를 지었다.
"I didn`t see you come in.
나는 너가 들어온것도 못 봤구나
Welcome, my dear boy, welcome- and good night!"
환영한다 나의 친구 환영해 그리고 잘자!
Then click and out went the llight.
그러더니 찰칵하는 소리가 나고 불이 꺼졌다

James Henry Troyyer lay there in the darkness with his eyes wide open,
James Henty Troyyer는 그의 두눈을 크게 뜨고 어둠속에 누워있었다.
listening to the strange sleeping noises that the "creatures" were making all around him,
그 주변있는 그 생명들이 자면서 내는 낯선 소리를 들었다
and wondering what on earth was going to happen to him in the morning.
그리고 아침에는 어떤 일이 일어날지 궁금해졌다.
Already, he was beginning to like his new friends very much
벌써부터 그는 새친구들이 무척이나 마음에 들었다.
They were not nearly as terrible as they looked.
그들은 생긴것처럼 무섭지 않았다.
In fact, they weren`t really terrible at all.
사실은 전혀 무섭지 않았다
They seemed extremely kind and helpful in spite of all the shouting and arguing that went on between them.
그들은 서로 고함을 치고 말싸움을 뱉기는 하지만 매우 친절하고 서로 도움을 준다
"Good night, Old- Green- Grasshopper," he whispered.
잘자요 늙은 초록 메뚜기 그는 속삭였다.
"Goon night, Ladybug, -Good night, Miss Spider-"
잘자요 무당벌레 잘자요 거미양
But before he could go through them all , he had fallen fast asleep.
그러나 그는 모두에 인사도 하기전에 그는 빨리 깊은잠에 빠져들었다

- "We`re off!" someone was shouting.
우리는 떠난다 누군가 소리쳤다
"Were off at last!"
마침내 떠난다!
James woke up with a jump and looked about him.
James는 벌떡 일어나고 그의 주의를 둘러보았다.
The creatures were all out of their hammocks and moving excitedly around the room.
그 생물들은 모두 침대에서 나와 들뜬 기분으로 그 방 주위를 돌아다녔다
Suddenly the floor gave a great heave ,
갑자기 그 바닥은 흔들렸다.
as though an earthquake were taking place.
지진이 난것 같았다.
"Here we go!" shouted the Old-Green-Grasshopper, hopping up and down with excitement.
우리는 떠난다! 그 늙은 초록 메뚜기는 소리쳤다 흥분해서 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰었다.
"Hold on tight!"
꼭 붙잡아요!
"What`s happening?" cried James,leaping out if his hammock.
무슨일이죠? James는 그의 침대에서 뛰어내리며 소리쳤다.
"What`s going on?"
무슨일이 일어나고 있는거예요?
The Ladybug, who was obviously a kind and gentle creature,
착하고 다정한 무당벌레는
came over and stood beside him.
다가와서 그의 옆에 섰다.
"In case you don`t know it,: she said,
너가 몰라서 그러는데(?) 그녀는 말했다
"we are about to depart forever from the top of his ghastly hill that we`ve all been living on for so long.
우리는 그토록 오랫동안 살아왔던 끔찍스러운 언덕 꼭대기에서 영원히 떠나는 거란다.
