The next moment, James was running back toward the house as fast as he could go.

He swerved away from them so as to go around the other side of the house, but then suddenly,just as he was passing underneath the old peach tree that stood in the middle of the garden, his foot slipped and he fell flat on his face in the grass

The paper bag burst openat it hit the ground and the thousands of tiny green things were scattered in all directions.
그 종이 봉지는 땅에 떨어졌교 초록색 알갱이 수천개가 사방으로 흩어졌다
James immeditely picked himself up onto his hands and kness and started searching around for his precious treasures.
제임스는 그의 손과발로 소중한 보물들을 찾기 시작했다

But what was this?

They were all sinking into the soil!

He could actually see them wrinnling and twist- ing as they burrowed their way downward into the hard earth, and at once he reached out a hand to pick some ofthem up before it was too late, but they disappeared right under his fingers.
그 알겡이들이 비비적거리고 꿈틀꿈틀거리면서 단단한 땅속으로 파고들어갔다
He went after some others, and the same thing happened!
그는 이 같은 일이 잃어나고 다른것들을 잡았다
He bagan scarbbling around fran-tically in an effort to catch hold of those that were left, but they were just about to touch them, they vanished into the earth!
그는 알갱이들을 손으로 잡아도 그방사라졌다. 그러나 그들은 단지 그들을 만지고 그들은 그 지구로 사라진다
And soon, in the space of only a few seconds, every single one of them had gone!
그리고 곧 그몇분후에 사라졌다 모든것들이 사라졌다
James felt like crying.

He would never get them back now - they were lost, lost, lost forever.

There was nothing down there.

"Get up at once, you lazy little beast!" a voice was suddenly shouting in James`s ear.
일어나서 해 이 게으른 작은짐승아! 갑자기 고함소리가 들려왔다.
James glanced up and saw Aunt Spinker standing over him, grim and tall and bony , glaring at him through her steelrimmed spectacles.
제임스는 올려다보았다 그리고 음침하고 크고 뼈가 확연히 들여다보이는 Spinker고모가 그를 째려보았다.
"Get back over there immediately and finish chopping up those logs.!" she ordered.
다시가서 즉시 해 그리고 장작을 패기를 끝내
Aunt Sponge, fat and pulpy as a jellyfish,came wad-dling up behind her sister to see what was going on,
Sponge 고모는 뚱뚱하고 해파리 같은 그녀의 언니 뒤에서 뒤뚱뒤뚱 걸어나오는게 보였다.
"Why don`t we just lower the boy down the well in a bucket and leave him there for the night?"she suggested.
우리 저 녀석을 양동이에 넣고 하룻밤 담가 놓은게 어때?그녀는 제안했다
"That ought to teach him not to laze around like this the whole day long."
따끔한 맛을 본다면 다시는 하루종일 빈둥거리지 못할거야
"That`s a very good wheeze, my dear Sponge.
아주 멋진 생각이야 Sponge
But let`s make him finish chopping up the wood first.
하지만 먼저 그 나무를 패기를 끝내게 만들자
Be off with you at once, you hideous brat, and do some work!"
저리가버려 이 끔찍한 버릇럾는 녀석아 가서 일이나 해!
Slowly, sadly,poor James got up off the ground and went back to the woodpile.
천천히 ,슬프게 불쌍한 제임스는 땅바다에서 일어나 장작더미로 갔다.
Oh, if only he hadn`t slipped and fallen and dropped that precious bag.
아, 마약 미끄러지지만 않았더라면 그 종이 봉지만 떨어뜨리지 않았다면
All hope of a happier life had gone completely now.
행복한 날에 대한 희망이 이제 다 사라졌어
Today and tomorrow row and the next day and all the other days as well would be nothing but punishment and pain, unhaaines and depair.
오늘 그리고 내일 그다음날도 꾸중과 고통 불행과 절망만 남아 있어
He picked up the chopper and was just about to start chiooubg away again when he heared a shout behind him that made him stop and turn,
그는 도끼를 집어들고 다시 나무를 패려는데 등뒤에서 비명소리가 들려왔다

"A nice big one, too!" Aunt Spiker said.

"A beauty, a beauty!" Aunt Sponge cried out.
아름다워 아름다워! Sponge고모는 소리쳤다.
At this point, James slowly put down his chopper and turned and looked across at the two women, who were standing underneath the peach tree.
이 시점에서, James는 천천히 그의 작은도끼로 찍었고 돌고 그 복숭아 나무 아래에 서있는 두 여자는 보았다
Something is about to happen, he told himself.

"It looks ripe to me,: Aunt spiker said, breaking the silence.

"Then why don`t we eat it? Aunt Sponge suggested, licking her thick lips.
그럼 왜 우리는 먹지 않아? Sponge고모는 그녀의 두꺼운 입술을 핥으며 제안했다
"We can have half each.
우리는 각각반씩 가질수 있어
Hey, you! James! Come over here at once and climb this tree!"
이봐 너 James 여기로 와서 이 나무에 올라가봐
James came runiing over.
James는 뛰어서 왔다
"I want you to pick that peach up there on the highet branch,"
저쪽에 있는 복숭아 나무에 복숭아를 골라 줬으면 좋겠어
Aunt Sponge went on.
Sponge고모는 갔다
"Can you see it?"
너 볼수 있니?
"Yes, Auntie Sponge, I can see it!"

She was staring up into the branches with her mouth wide open and her eyes bulging as though she had seen a ghost.
그녀는 그녀의 입을 벌리고 그녀는 귀신을 본것마냥 갔다
"Look!" she said.
뵈 그녀는 말했다
"Look, Sponge, look!"
봐, Sponge 봐 !
"What`s the matter with you?" Aunt Sponge demanded.

The two women and the small boy stood absolutely still on the grass underneath the tree, gazing up at this extra- ordinary fruit.

Jame`s little face was glowing with excite- ment, his eyes were as big and bright as two stars.

He could see the peach swelling larger and larger as clearly as if it were a ballon being blown up.

In half a minute, it was twice as big again!

"Will it ever stop!" Aunt Sponge shouted, waving her fat arms and staring to dance around in circles.
멈추지 않겠어! Sponge고모는 소리쳤다. 그녀의 뚱뚱한 팔을 휘저으며 빙글빙글 원에서 춤을 추기 시작했다
And now it was so big it looked like an enormous butter colored pumkin dangling from the top of the tree.
그리고 이제 그것은 크고 누러 호박만큼 커서 나무 꼭대기에 매달려 있었다
"Get away from that tree trunk, you stupid boy!"

Aunt spiker yelled

The branch that the peach was growing upon was beginning to bend over further and further because of the weight

"It`s coming down!
알래로 떨어진다 !
The branch is going to break!"
나뭇가지가 부러지려고 해!
But the branch didin`t break.
그러나 그 가지는 부러지지 않았다
It simply bent over more and more as the peach got heavier and heavier.
그것은 점점더 무거워져도 나뭇가지는 그저 휘어질 뿐이었다
And still it went on growing.
그리고 여전히 커져갔다
In another minute, this mammoth fruit was as large and round and fat as aunt spoongge herself, and probably just as heavy.
1분이 지나자 이 거대한 과일은 커졌고 Sponge고모는 그녀만큼 무게가 나갈것 같았다

"It has to stop now!" Aunt Spiker yelled.

Soon it was the size of a smll car, and reached halfway to the ground.

Booth aunts were now hopping around and around te ree, clappng their hands and shouting all sorts of silly things in their excitement.
고모 둘다 신이나서 손뼉을 치고 환호성을 지르며 나무주위를 빙빙 돌았다
"Hallelujah!" Aunt Spiker shouted.
할렐루야 ! Spiker 고모는 소리쳤다
"What a peach! What a peach!"
복숭아야 복숭아야
"Terrifico!" Aunt Sponge cried out,"Magnifico! Splendifico!
무서워! Sponge고모는 소리쳤다 굉장히 좋아! 찬양해 !
And What a meal!"
그리고 식사야!
"It`s still growing!"
여전히 자라!
"I know! I know!"

- As for James, he was so spellbound by the whole thing that he could only stand and stare and stare and murmur quietly to himself,

Bigger and bigger grew the peach, bigger and bigger and bigger.

Then at last, when it had become nearly as tall as the tree that it was growing on, as tall and wide, in fact as a samll house, the bottom part of it gently touched the groun- and there it rested
그러다 마침내 복숭점점 커크고 크게 자라고 두께는 조그마한 집만해지고 밑부분이 땅에 스치고 그대로 매달려 있었다

"It`s slowing down, Spiker, it`s slowing down!
속도가 줄어들었을뿐이야 spiker 속도가 줄어들었을뿐이야
But it hasn`t stoppped yet!
그러나 멈추지 않았어
You watch it!"

There was a pause.
침묵이 흘렀다
"It has now!"
이제 !
"I believe you`re right."
너가 맞아
"Do you think it`s safe to touch it? "
만져도 괜찮을까?
"I don`t know.

We`d better be careful."
우리는 조심하는게 좋아
Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker began walking slowly around the peach,
Sponge고모와 Spiker고모는 천천히 복숭아 주위로 걸어가기 시작했다
Inspecting it very cautiously from all sides.
조심스럽게 주위를 돌며 살펴보았다
They were like a couple of hunters who had just shot an elephant and were not quite sure whether it was dead or alive.
그들은 코끼리를 쏜 뒤에 코끼리가 죽었는지 확인해 보려고 하는 사냥꾼 같아 보였다
