- NOT FAR from where I live there is a queer old empty wooden house standing all by itself on the side of the road.
내가 살고 있는 곳으로부터 멀지 않은/나무로 지어진 기묘하고 오래된 빈 집이 있다/도로 건너편에
I long to explore inside it but the door is always locked, and when I peer through a window all I can see is darkness and dust.
나는 그곳의 안쪽을 탐험하기를 간절히 웠했다/그러나 항상 문은 잠겨있었다, 그리고 내가 창문 틈으로 들여다 봤을 때/나는 어둠 그리고 먼지만 볼 수 있었다.
I know the ground floor used once to be a shop because I can still read the faded lettering across the front which says THE GRUBBER.
나는 1층이 가게로 사용되었다고 생각했다. 왜냐하면 나는 바로 맞은편에서 THE GRUBBER이라고 써 있는 색이 바랜 글자를 읽을 수 있었기 때문이다.
My mother has told me that in our part of the country in the olden days a grubber was another name for a sweet-shop, and now every time I look at it I think to myself what a lovely old sweet-shop it must have been.
나의 엄마는 나에게 옛날에 우리 지역의 일부에서는 과자가게를 grubber라는 또 다른 이름으로 불렀다는 것을 말씀해 주셨다, 그리고 이제는 내가 볼 때마다 사랑스러운 오래된 과자가게가 있을 것이라고 생각했다.
On the shop-window itself somebody has painted in white the words FOR SAIL.
가게 창문에서는 누군가가 흰색으로 For SAIL이라는 글을 그렸다
One morning, I noticed that FOR SAIL had been scraped off the shop-window and in its place somebody had painted SOLED.
어느날 아침, 나는 가게 창문에서 FOR SAIL이 긁어졌고 그 자리에는 누군가가 SOLED라는 것을 칠한 것을 알아 차렸다.
I stood there staring at the new writing and wishing like mad that it had been me who had bought it because then I would have been able to make it into a grubber all over again.
나는 새로운 글을 쳐다보며 서 있었고 그것을 산 것이 나였으면 좋겠다고 소망했다 왜냐하면 나는 그것을 다시 grubber으로 만들 수 있었기 때문이다.
I have always longed and longed to own a sweet-shop.

The sweet-shop of my dreams would be loaded from top to bottom with Sherbet Suckers and Caramel Fudge and Russian Toffee and Sugar Snorters and Butter Gumballs and thousands and thousands of other glorious things like that.

- THE Giraffe AND THE PELLY AND ME
- On my next visit to The Grubber, I was standing across the road gazing at the wonderful old building when suddenly an enormous bathtub came sailing out through one of the second-floor windows and crashed right on to the middle of the road!
내가 The Grubber에 다음에 방문했을 때, 나는 도로 건너편에 서서 아주 멋진 낡은 건물을 응시했는데 갑자기 거대한 욕조가 2층에 있는 한 창문을 통해 밖으로 날아왔다 그리고 도로 한가운데에서 사고가 났다!
A few moments later, a white porcelain lavatory pan with the wooden seat still on it came flying out of the same window and landed with a wonderful splintering crash just beside the bathtub.
잠시 후, 여전히 나무로 된 시트가 있는 흰 도자기로 된 변기가 같은 창문을 통해 날아왔다 그리고 아주 멋진 소리와 함께 욕조 바로 옆에 떨어졌다.
This was followed by a kitchen sink and an empty canary-cage and a four-poster bed and two hot-water bottles and a rocking horse and a sewing-machine and goodness knows what else besides.
부엌의 싱크대와 비어있는 새장과 4주식 침대 그리고 두개의 뜨거운 물이 있는 병 그리고 흔들리는 말 그리고 재봉틀 그리고 그 외의 다른 알 수 없는 것들.
It looked as though some madman was ripping out the whole of the inside of the house, because now pieces of staircase and bits of the banisters and a whole lot of old floorboards came whistling through the windows.
그것은 온전한 집의 안쪽을 찢어서 마치 조금 미치광이인 것처럼 보였다, 왜냐하면 지금은 계단 그리고 낡은 마룻장이 창문들을 통해 떨어졌기 때문이다.
Then there was silence.

I waited and waited but not another sound came from within the building.

I crossed the road and stood right under the windows and called out, "Is anybody at home?"

There was no answer.

In the end it began to get dark so I had to turn away and start walking home.

But you can bet your life nothing was going to stop me from hurrying back there again tomorrow morning to see what the next surprise was going to be.

- When I got back to the Grubber house the next morning, the first thing I noticed was the new door.
내가 Grubber 집으로 다음날 아침에 돌아갔을 때, 즉시 나는 새로운 문이 생겼다는 것을알아챘다.
The dirty old brown door had been taken out and in its place someone had fitted a brand-new red one.

The new door was fantastic.
새로운 문은 환상적이였다.
It was twice as high as the other one had been and it looked ridiculous.

I couldn't begin to imagine who would want a tremendous tall door like that in his house unless it was a giant.

As well as this, somebody had scraped away the SOLED notice on the shop-window and now there was a whole lot of different writing all over the glass.

I stood there reading it and reading it and trying to figure out what on earth it all meant.

I tried to catch some sign or sound of movement inside the house but there was none...until all of a sudden...out of the corner of my eye..I noticed that one of the windows on the top floor was slowly beginning to open outwards...

- The head stared back at me with big round dark eyes.
머리가 나의 등을 커다랗고 동그란 눈으로 나를 응시했다.
Suddenly, a second window was flung wide open and of all the crazy things a gigantic white bird hopped out and perched on the window-sill.
갑자기, 두번째 창문이 확 열렸고 모든 미친 것들이 거대하고 흰 새가 창틀에서 뛰어내렸다.
I knew what this one was because of its amazing beak which was shaped like a huge orange-coloured basin.
나는 이것이 무엇인지 왜냐하면 그 모양은 거대한 오랜지색 대야같은 엄청난 부리라는 것을
알고 있었기 때문이다.
The Pelican looked down at me and sang out: "Oh, how I wish

For a big fat fish!

I'm as hungry as ever could be!

How far are we from the sea?"

"We are a long way from the sea," I called back to him, "but there is a fishmonger in the village not far away."
"우리는 바다로부터 먼 길을 왔다,"나는 그에게 대답했다,"그러나 마을 안에는 생선장수가 있지 않아요."
"A fish what?"

"생선 장수요."
"Now what on earth would that be?" asked the Pelican.
"도대체 그게 뭐야?" 사다새가 물었다.
"I have heard of a fish-pie and a fish-cake and a fish-finger, but I have never heard of a fish-monger.
"나는 생선 파이와 생선 케이크와 피시 핑거는 들어봤다, 그러나 나는 생선장수는 절대 들어본 적이 없다.
Are these mongers good to eat?"
장수들은 맛있어?"
This question baffled me a bit, so I said, "Who is your friend in the next window?"
그 질문은 나를 약간 당황하게 만들었다 "옆 창문에 있는 네 친구는 누구니?"
"She is the Giraffe!" the Pelican answered.
"그녀는 기린이야!" 사다새가 대답했다.
"Is she not wonderful? Her legs are on the ground floor and her head is looking out of the top window!"
"그녀가 아주 멋지지 않니? 그녀의 다리는 1층에 있고 그녀의 머리는 꼭대기의 창문 밖을 보고 있어!"
As if all this wasn't enough, the window on the first floor was now flung wide open and out popped a Monkey!
마치 모든 것이 충분하지 않았던 것처럼, 1층에 있는 창문이 활짝 열리고 한 원숭이가 불쑥 나타났다!
the Monkey stood on the window-sill and did a jiggly little dance.
원숭이는 창틀에 서있었다 그리고 불안정하게 작게 춤을 췄다.
He was so skinny he seemed to be made only out of furry bits of wire, but he danced wonderfully well, and I clapped and cheered and did a little dance myself in return.
그는 매우 깡말랐다 그는 단지 털로 덮인 철사 조각같이 보였다 , 그러나 그는 춤을 매우 멋있게 췄다, 그리고 나는 박수와 환호 그리고 답례로 작게 춤을 췄다.

- Then I heard the Giraffe saying to the Pelican in the next window, "Pelly, my dear, be so good as to fly down and bring that small person up here to talk to us."
그리고 나는 기린이 옆 창문에서 사다새에게 말하는 것을 들었다, "Pelly, 당신, 이리 내려와서 작은 사람도 우리와 함께 이야기 할 수 있도록 데려오는 것이 좋을 것 같아요."
At once the Pelican spread his huge white wings and flew down on to the road beside me.
곧 사다새가 그의 거대하고 흰 날개를 펼치고 나의 옆에 있는 도로로 날아왔다.
"Hop in," he said, opening his enormous beak.
"올라타," 그가 말했다, 그의 거대한 부리를 벌렸다.
I stared at the great orange beak and backed away.
나는 큰 오랜지색 부리를 보며 뒤로 걸었다.
"Go on!" the Monkey shouted from up in his window.

"The Pelly isn't going to swallow you!

I said to the Pelican, "I'll only get in if you promise not to shut your beak once I'm inside."

"You have nothing to fear!" cried the Pelican,

"When I have done what I am just about to do," said the Pelican, "I won't be able to shut it.

- "Show me," I said.

"Watch this!" cried the Pelican.

I watched in amazement as the top half of the Pelican's beak began to slide smoothly backwards into his head until the whole thing was almost out of sight.
나는 사다새의 부리의 윗 절반이 머리가 거의 보이지 않을 때까지 그의 머리가 부드럽게 뒤쪽으로 움직이기 시작한 놀라운 장면을 보았다.
"It bends and goes down inside the back of my neck!" cried the Pelican

"Is that not sensible?

Is it not magical?"

"It's unbelievable," I said.

"It's exactly like one of those metal tape-measures my father's got at home.

- "Precisely," said the Pelican.

"You see, the top half is of no use to me unless I am chewing fish.
"너는 봤다, 윗 절반은 내가 물고기를 먹지 않으면 쓸모 없다.
The bottom half is what counts, my lad!
아랫 절반은 중요하다, 친구여!
The bottom half of this glorious beak of mine is the bucket in which we carry our window-cleaning water!
영광스러운 아래쪽 절반은 우리가 창문을 청소할 때 물을 담는 양동이이다.
So if I didn't slide the top half away I'd be standing around all day long holding it open!
그래서 내가 윗 절반이 미끄러지지 않는다면 나는 하루 종일 그것을 열고 서 있을 것이다.
"So I slide it away.

For the rest of the day!

The Giraffe is waiting!"

- I climbed into the big orange beak, and with a swoosh of wings the Pelican carried me back to his perch on the window-sill.

The Giraffe looked out of her window at me and said, "How do you do? What is your name?"

"Billy," I told her.

We must have some windows to clean.
