- “I’ve seen that prince,” said the eldest sister.
“나 왕자님을 본 적이 있어,” 첫째 언니가 말했다.
“He lives in a grand palace by the sea.”
“그는 바닷가에 한 웅장한 성에 살아.”
“Really?” cried the excited little mermaid.
“정말?” 흥분한 어린 인어공주가 외쳤다.
“Show me!”
“나에게 보여줘!”
That evening, all six mermaids rose up through the sea and swam to the palace.
그날 저녁, 모든 6명의 인어공주들이 바다를 통해 떠올랐고 성을 향해 헤엄쳤다.
It stood proud and shiny at the water’s edge.
그것은 자랑스럽게 물가에서 빛나게 서있었다.
As the mermaids watched, a man strode onto the balcony.
인어공주들이 보고 있을 때, 한 남자가 발코니 위에서 성큼 성큼 걸었다.
“It’s my prince!” cried the little mermaid.
“나의 왕자님이야!” 어린 인어공주가 외쳤다.
“Do you think he’s looking for me?”
“그가 너를 찾고 있다고 생각하니?”
“Don’t be silly,” said the eldest sister.
“바보처럼 굴지 마,” 첫째 언니가 말했다.
Day after day, the little mermaid returned to the palace.
날마다 그 어린 인어공주는 성으로 돌아왔다.
Each time, she swam a little closer.
그럴 때 마다 그녀는 조금씩 더 가까이 헤엄쳤다.
When the prince went sailing, she swam behind him.
그 왕자가 출항을 갈 때, 그녀는 그의 뒤에서 헤엄쳤다.
She prayed for a storm, so she could save him again.
그녀는 폭풍을 오기를 기도했다, 그래서 그녀는 그를 다시 구할 수 있었다.
But it never came.
하지만 그런 일은 절대 오지 않았다.
Paying the price
Back beneath the waves, the sisters were decorating the castle for a summer ball.
파도 속 뒤에선, 그 자매들이 여름 무도회를 위해서 성을 장식하고 있었다.

- “Come and help us,” they called to the little mermaid.

“You’re not still thinking about that prince, are you?” said her eldest sister.

The little mermaid nodded.
그 어린 인어공주는 끄덕였다.
“Remember, he’s a man and you’re a mermaid,” her sister went on.

“He will only make you unhappy.”
“그는 오직 너를 행복하지 않게 만들거야.”
By nightfall, the sea castle looked splendid.
해질녘에 용궁은 화려해보였다.
Blue flames rose up from pearly white shells, lighting the way from the gardens to the hell.
정원에서 그 지옥으로 가는 길을 밝히면서 푸른 불꽃이 하얀 조개 진주로부터 떠올랐다.
Guests streamed in, wearing shimmery clothes...
사람들이 몰려왔다, 비슷한 옷을 입은 사람들이...
...and a fish band sang gurgling tunes.
...그리고 물고기 무리가 물이 쏴하는 소리에 맞추어 노래를 했다.

- The little mermaid pretended to join in, but she couldn’t stop thinking of her prince.
어린 인어공주는 함께하는 것인 척 했지만 그녀는 그녀의 왕자님의 생각을 멈출 수 없었다.
“I have to do something,” she thought.
“난 뭔가 좀 해야겠어,” 그녀는 생각했다.
“Maybe the sea witch can help me...”
“아마 그 바다 마녀는 날 도울 수 있을거야...”
While her sisters swayed to the fish band’s songs, the little mermaid swam away.
그녀의 자매들이 물고기 무리들의 노래로 마음이 흔들리는 동안 그 어린 인어공주는 헤엄쳤다.
It was a dark and dangerous journey to the sea witch’s cave.
어두웠고 바다 마녀의 동굴로의 여행은 위험하다.
The little mermaid crossed bubbling hot mud...
그 어린 인어공주는 뜨거운 진흙 거품을 교차했다...
dodged swirling whirlpools...
빙빙도는 소용돌이를 기피했다...
...and darted past slimy seaweed arms.
...그리고 끈적거리는 해초 팔을 쏜살같이 지나쳤다.
At last, the craggy cave loomed up ahead.
마지막으로 그 바위투성이의 동굴이 흐릿하게 나타났다.
The ugly sea witch stood at the entrance.
못생긴 바다 마녀가 출입구에 섰다.

- “So you want legs to impress a prince,” she snapped.
“그래서 너는 인상 깊은 한 왕자님을 위해 다리를 가지고 싶다고,” 그녀는 딱딱거렸다.
(The sea witch knew everything.)
(바다 마녀는 모든 것을 알고 있다.)
“They will cost you dearly.”
“그들은 너를 비싼 대가로 치를 거야.”
“But I have nothing to give you,” said the little mermaid.
“하지만 저는 당신에게 줄 것이 아무것도 없어요.” 그 어린 인어공주는 말했다.
“Yes you do,” the witch declared.
“그래 그렇겠지,” 그 마녀는 분명히 말했다.
“Your voice.”
“너의 목소리.”
The little mermaid gulped.
그 어린 인어공주는 숨을 깊이 들이 마쉬었다.
“But how will I talk to my prince?” she asked.
“하지만 어떻게 제가 저의 왕자님과 대화할까요?” 그녀는 물었다.
“That’s not my problem.”
“그건 내 문제가 아니지.”
The witch started stirring a potion.
그 마녀는 묘약을 젓기 시작했다.

- “This will split your tail in two,” she said, “and give you human legs.”
“이건 너의 꼬리를 두 다리로 나눌 거야,” 그녀는 말했다, “그리고 너에게 사람 다리를 주겠지.”
“But there are two things you should know,” she added.
“하지만 너가 알아야 할 두가지 것들이 있어,”그녀는 덧붙였다.
“One, if you drink this potion, you can never go back to your father’s castle.
“하나, 만약 네가 이 묘약을 마신다면, 너는 다시는 너의 아버지의 궁으로 돌아갈 수 없어.
And two, if the prince doesn’t return your love...you will dissolve into the ocean waves.“
그리고 둘, 만약 그 왕자가 다시 너의 사랑으로 돌아오지 않는다면...너는 바다 파도 속으로 녹을 거야.“
The witch stopped stirring and looked up.
그 마녀는 섞는 것을 멈추었고 올려 다 보았다.
“Do you still want to drink it?” she asked.
“아직도 넌 이걸 마시기를 원하니?” 그녀는 물었다.
The little mermaid didn’t pause.
그 어린 인어공주는 멈추지 않았다.
“I do,” she replied.
“그럴게요,” 그녀는 대답했다.
They were the last words she ever spoke.
그것은 그녀가 말한 마지막 단어였다.
With a wave of her wand, the witch added the mermaid’s voice to her potion.
그녀의 지팡이의 파도와 함께, 그 마녀는 어린 인어공주의 목소리를 그녀의 묘약에 더했다.

- The prince’s bride
By dawn, the little mermaid was sitting on a sea rock near the palace.

In her trembling hand she held a bottle of the witch’s potion.
그녀의 부르르 떨리는 손으로 그녀는 마녀의 묘약의 병을 잡았다.
Suddenly, a door opened and the prince stepped onto his balcony.
마침내, 어떤 문이 열렸고 그 왕자는 그의 발코니 위로 걸어왔다.
He stretched, yawned and gazed out to sea.

The sight of the prince made the mermaid bolder.

She swallowed the potion, jumped into the water...spluttered, splashed and nearly drowned.
그녀는 그 묘약을 삼켰고, 물 속으로 점프했다...칙칙거렸다, 철벅 떨어졌고 거의 익사할 뻔 했다.
Her tail had split into legs.
그녀의 꼬리는 다리로 나누어졌다.

- The prince saw the splashes.
그 왕자님은 첨벙거리는 것을 보았다.
“Who’s that?” he called.
“거기 누구 입니까?” 그는 불렀다.
“Somebody help her.”
“아무나 그녀를 좀 돕거라.”
A servant waded in and pulled the little mermaid to safety.
어떤 하인이 헤엄치며 들어왔고 어린 인어공주를 안전한 곳으로 당겼다.
Soon she was standing in front of her prince.
곧 그녀는 그녀의 왕자님 앞에 서게 되었다.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“누구십니까?” 그는 물었다.
She couldn’t answer.
그녀는 대답할 수 없었다.
He asked again.
그는 다시 물었다.
She still couldn’t answer.
그녀는 여전히 대답할 수 없었다.
Instead, she smiled.
대신에 그녀는 미소를 지었다.

- The prince smiled back.

“Find this young lady some clothes,” he said to his servant.

“She’s joining me for breakfast.”
“그녀는 아침식사를 나와 함께 할 것이다.”
The little mermaid spent the whole day with the prince.
그 어린 인어공주는 모든 하루를 그 왕자님과 보냈다.
She saw very happy but kept wobbling on her new feet.
그녀는 매우 행복하게 보였지만 여전히 그녀의 새로운 발은 흔들거렸다.
“Take my arm,” said the prince.
“내 팔을 잡아요,” 왕자님이 말했다.
“I’ll show you around.”
“내가 주위를 보여줄게요.”
That evening, the little mermaid stood on the prince’s balcony.
그 저녁에, 어린 인어공주는 왕자님의 발코니 위에 섰다.
Frothy waves danced on the rocks below.
거품 파도가 바위 아래에서 춤을 춘다.
Five tails flipped by and she recognized her sisters.

“I don’t even know your name,” the prince was saying.

“But when I saw you in the water this morning, I thought of my own true love.”

The mermaid’s eyes sparkled and her heart beat faster.
그 인어공주의 눈은 반짝였고 그녀의 심장 박동은 빨라졌다.
“I almost drowned once,” he went on.

“I was swept to a beach and woken by a lovely princess.

- Tomorrow I’m going to set sail and marry her!“
내일 난 출항할 것이고 그녀와 결혼 할 거예요!“
The prince’s words were like a dagger in the mermaid’s heart.
그 왕자님의 말은 인어공주의 심장에 단검처럼 왔다.
He was everything to her, but he loved someone else.
그는 그녀에게 모든 것이었다, 하지만 그는 다른 누군가를 사랑한다.
“Don’t worry,” he said.
“걱정마요,” 그는 말했다.
“You can come with me.”
“당신은 나와 함께 갈 수 있어요.”
But the little mermaid shook her head, sobbing silently.
하지만 어린 인어공주는 조용히 흐느끼며 충격을 받았다.
Next morning, she watched her prince sail into the distance.
다음 날 아침, 그녀는 그녀의 왕자님이 먼 곳으로 항해하는 것을 보았다.
The world she loved was lost to her.
그녀가 사랑했던 세상은 그녀에게 사라졌다.
“You can never go back,” said the witch’s voice inside her hand.
“넌 절대 돌아갈 수 없어,” 마녀의 목소리가 그녀의 손 안에서 말했다.
“Come to us,” sang the ocean spray.
“우리와 가자,” 바다 스프레이가 노래했다.
“Forever,” whispered the foaming surf.
“영원히,” 거품 파도가 속삭였다.
With tears streaming down her cheeks, the brave little mermaid disappeared into the welcoming waves.
그녀의 볼에 비 오는 듯한 눈물과 함께 그 용기있는 어린 인어공주는 환영하는 파도 속으로 사라졌다.

- They were friendly smiling faces, but they were also quite serious.
그들은 다정하게 미소를 띈 표정이었다, 하지만 그들은 또한 아주 심각했다.
There was no sign of joking or leg-pulling on any of them.
아무런 농담이나 장난이란 것이 그들에게서 신호가 없었다.
Well? Have you? asked Grandpa Joe.

I... I really don't know, Grandpa, Charlie stammered.
저는...저는 정말 모르겠어요, 할아버지, 찰리는 말을 더듬었다.
“Whenever I walk past the factory, the gates seem to be closed.“
“내가 그 공장을 지나쳐 걸을 때면 언제든지, 그 출입구는 닫혀보인단다.”
Exactly!" said Grandpa Joe.
정확해요!“ 조 할아버지가 말했다.
“But there must be people working there.. .
하지만 사람들이 그곳에서 일을 하지 않았을 거예요..
“Not people, Charlie. Not ordinary people, anyway.”
사람이 없어, 찰리, 어디든 보통 사람은 없어.“
Then who?" cried Charlie.
그러면 누군데요?“ 찰 리가 외쳤다.
“Ah-ha.. . .That's it, you see... . That's another of Mr.Willy Wonka's clevernesses.”
“아하...이제 알겠어요.. 그게 윌리 웡카씨의 똑똑함이군요.”

- Charlie, dear, Mrs. Bucket called out from where was standing by the door, "it's time for bed.
찰리, 얘야, 버킷부인이 밖에서 문 옆에 서있으면서 불렀다, “잠자리에 들 시간이구나.
That's enough tonight.“
오늘 밤엔 충분했단다.“
But mother, I must hear. ."
하지만 엄마, 나 더 들어야만 하는데..“
Tomorrow, my darling. "
내일, 아가야.“
"That's right,"said Grandpa Joe,
“그래,” 조 할아버지가 말했다.
“I’ll tell you the rest of it tomorrow evening."
“내가 널 내일 저녁 쉬는 시간에 부르마.”
The Secret Workers
THE NEXT EVENING, Grandpa Joe went on with his story.
그 다음 저녁, 할아버지 조는 그의 이야기를 시작했다.
"You see, Charlie, he said, "not so very long ago there used to be thousands of people working in Mr. Willy Wonka's factory.

- Then one day, all of a sudden, Mr. Wonka had to ask every single one of them to leave, to go home, never to come back.

"But why?" asked Charlie.
“하지만 왜요?” 찰 리가 물었다.
"Because of spies."

Spies?"
스파이요?“
"Yes. All the other chocolate makers, you see, had begun to grow jealous of the wonderful candies that Mr.Wonka was making, and they started sending in spies to
steal his secret recipes.
“그래. 모든 초콜릿을 만드는 사람은 각각, 알다시피, 아름다운 사탕인 웡카가 만든 것에 질투심을 키워 그래서 그들은 그의 비밀 레시피를 뺏기로 첩자를 보내지.
The spies took jobs in the Wonka factory, pretending that they were ordinary workers, and while they were there, each one of them found out exactly how a certain special thing was made.“
