- The deep blue sea
Far out at sea, below the waves, deeper and deeper and deeper still, stood the Sea King's castle.
멀리 먼 바다에, 물결 밑에, 더 깊고 더 깊고 훨씬 깊은 용왕의 성에 섰다.
There, at the very bottom of the sea, the water was as clear as glass.
바다의 아주 바닥에는 유리처럼이나 깨끗한 물이 존재했다.
The sand was as fine as powder.
모래는 분말처럼이나 우수했다.
Tall seaweed grew up around the castle walls and small, bright fish darted among its branches.
키가 큰 해초는 성벽 주변에서 자랐고 키가 작은 해초는 쏜살같이 달려드는 물고기에 둘러싸인 나뭇가지에서 빛났다.
The Sea King was very proud of his castle.
용왕은 그의 성에 관하여 아주 자랑스러워 하였다.
It was the perfect place to bring up his six mermaid daughters.
그 성은 그의 여섯명의 인어 딸들을 양육하기에 완벽한 장소였다.
Each daughter was given her own small garden to care for.
각각의 딸들은 조심히 다루는 그녀들의 소유인 작은 정원을 가지게 되었다.

- The Little Mermaid
- "I'm going to shape mine like a whale," said the eldest.
"저는 저의 정원을 고래 처럼 가꿀 것이에요," 첫째가 말했다.
"Mine will have a seashell border," said the next.
"저의 정원은 잔디 밭 둘레에 조가비를 놓을 거예요," 둘째가 말했다.
"And I'm going to grow pretty flowers," said the third.
"그리고 저는 아름다운 꽃들을 기를 거예요," 셋째가 말했다.
The fourth and fifth mermaids loved exploring.
넷째와 다섯째 인어는 탐험하기를 좋아했다.
"Let's decorate our gardens with treasure from shipwrecks,"they said.
"우리 정원은 난파선에서 나온 보물로 장식하자," 그들은 말했다.
Then their little sister appeared, hugging a statue of a smiling boy.
그러자 그들의 막내 딸이 웃고있는 소년의 조각상을 안으면서 나타났다.
"Look what I've found!" she cried.
"제가 무엇을 찾아냈는지 보세요!" 그녀가 외쳤다.

- "I'm going to put him in my garden."
"저는 그를 제 정원에 놓겠어요."
The sisters spent all day in the castle waters, tending their gardens and playing games.
자매들은 모든 날을 성 안 물 속에서 지냈다, 그들의 정원을 관리하고 게임을 하면서 말이다.
In the evening, at the sea turned to inky black, their grandmother called them inside for supper.
저녁, 바다가 새까만색으로 변하였을 때, 그들의 할머니는 그들을 저녁을 먹자고 안으로 불렀다.
Lying on silky cushions, the family ate steaming seaweed parcels and soft sea fruits.
비단같은 쿠션위에 누웠으면서, 그 가족들은 데워진 해초 꾸러미와 부드러운 바다 과일을 먹었다.
"Tell us a story, Grandmama," begged the littlest mermaid.
"저희에게 이야기를 해주세요, 할머니," 막내 인어가 간청했다.
Grandmama had seen the world above the waves.
할머니는 물결 보다 위에 세상을 본적이 있다.
She told amazing tales of men with two legs and no tail.
그녀는 두 다리에 꼬리를 가지지 않는 남자의 놀라운 이야기를 해주었다.

- "There are buildings as tall as the ocean is deep," she said,
"바다가 깊은만큼이나 높은 빌딩들이 있었단다," 그녀가 말했다,
"and machines that glide even faster than sharks."
"그리고 미끄러지는 것 조차 상어보다 빠른 기계들이 있었단다."
The little mermaid hung on her every word.
막내 인어는 그녀의 모든 말에 열중했다.
"When you reach fifteen," announced the Sea King,
"네가 15살에 이를때," 용왕이 선언하였다,
"you may rise above the waves and see these things for yourselves."
"너는 물결 보다 위로 초월할지도 모르고 너 스스로 그것들을 볼지도 모른다."
While the older sisters flicked their tails in delight, the little mermaid sat drumming her fingers.
그 첫째가 그들의 꼬리를 즐겁게 가볍게 쳤을 때, 막내 인어는 그녀의 손가락을 둥둥거리며 앉았다.
"That's six whole years away!" she sighed.
"여섯명 모두에게 몇년이 갔어!" 그녀는 한숨을 쉬었다.

- On the eldest sister’s fifteenth birthday, the Sea King’s castle froth with excitement.
첫째의 15번째 생일날, 용왕의 성은 흥분으로 된 거품이 생겼다.
The mermaids showered their big sister with twinkling pearls.
인어들은 반짝거리는 진주들로 그들의 맏언니를 목욕시켰다.
But the best present of all was the Sea King’s blessing.
하지만 모든 선물 중 가장 좋은 선물은 용왕의 축복이었다.
“Now you can swim to the surface of the sea,” he said.
“이제 너는 바다의 수면에서 수영 할 수 있단다,” 그는 말했다.
“Come back quickly!” called the little mermaid.
“빨리 돌아와!” 막내가 말했다.
She wanted to hear everything about the world above.
그녀는 세상보다 위의 관한 모든 것을 듣고 싶어 했다.
Her sister finally returned, grinning with excitement.
그녀의 언니는 흥분으로 미소를 띄우며 마침내 돌아왔다.

One by one, the sisters reached fifteen and were allowed to swim above the waves.

“I can’t wait to see what dry land looks like,” she told him.
“난 육지가 어떻게 생겼는지 보기까지를 기다릴 수 없어,” 그녀가 그에게 말했다.
Finally, the year...them the month...then the day of her fifteen birthday arrived.
마침내, 그 해에...그들에게...그 달에...그녀의 15번째 생일 날이 찾아왔다.
As soon as the celebrations were over, she set off for the surface.
축하 행사가 끝나자마자 그녀는 표면을 향해 출발했다.
“Goodbye!” she called to her sisters, rising up like a bubble of air.
“잘가!” 그녀는 공기의 거품처럼 떠오르면서 그녀의 자매들을 향해 불렀다.
With each swish of her tail, the water felt lighter.
그녀의 꼬리는 각각 휙 돌아섰고 물은 더 빛나게 느껴졌다.

Lanterns hung from the masts and lively music filled the air.
돛대에서 드리워진 등과 활기 넘치는 음악이 공기를 채웠다.
Closer still, she saw people dancing on deck.
계속해서 더 가까이 갔다, 그녀는 사람들이 갑판위에서 춤추는 것을 보았다.
She stared in delight as their two legs carried them back and forth.
그녀는 즐겁게 그들의 두 다리를 가지고 왔다 갔다 하는 것을 쳐다보았다.

- A handsome young man appeared, wearing a crown.
어떤 왕관을 끼고 있는 잘생긴 젊은 남자가 나타났다.
“Happy birthday, Prince Milo!” the people shouted, as a hundred rockets exploded in the sky.
“생일 축하해, 마일로 왕자!” 사람들은 소리쳤다, 백 개의 폭죽이 하늘에서 폭발했다.
The little mermaid watched the prince, enchanted.
막내 인어 공주가 왕자를 보았다, 넋을 잃었다.
It was as if her statue had come to life.
그녀의 조각상이 살아 움직인 것만 같았다.
Suddenly, the weather turned stormy and everyone ran below deck.
마침내, 날씨가 폭풍이 쳤고 모두들 갑판 아래로 뛰었다.
Waves rose up like mountains around the creaking ship and a streak of lightning split the dark clouds.
파도들이 삐걱거리는 배 주위에 산처럼 떠올랐고 한 줄기의 광선이 검은색 구름을 갈랐다.
The little mermaid rode the surf with glee, but then she heard cries from the ship.
막내 인어공주는 신나하며 파도를 탔지만 그러자 그녀는 배로부터 외치는 소리를 들었다.

- The wind and waves were battering it apart, tossing terrified people into the foaming sea.
바람과 파도는 배의 이리저리를 난타하였고, 겁이 난 사람들은 거품 바다 속으로 던졌다.
The mermaid was horrified.

“They’ll never survive without tails,” she thought.
“그들은 절대 꼬리 없이는 살아남지 못할 거야,” 그녀는 생각했다.
“Oh, the poor prince. I must find him...”
“오, 불쌍한 왕자님, 제가 그를 발견하고야 말겠어요...”
She searched everywhere, diving between beams and planks.
그녀는 모든 곳을 찾아 다녔고, 기둥과 판지 사이를 뛰어들었다.
At last she saw him, clinging to a broken mast.
마지막으로 그녀는 그를 보았다, 부서진 돛대에 매달리고 있는 그를 말이다.
She pulled the prince to a sheltered cove and let the waves him ashore.
그녀는 그 왕자를 안식처인 동굴로 밀었고 파도로 그를 물가에 놓아두었다.

The little mermaid watched from a clump of seaweed.

As the dawn light warmed the sky, a pretty girl came and helped the prince to his feet.
새벽빛이 하늘을 데웠을 때, 어떤 아름다운 소녀가 왔고 그가 일어서도록 도왔다.
Smiling, he looked out to sea, then walked away.
그는 먼 바다 속으로 미소를 지었다, 그리고 떠나 버렸다.
Finding her prince
그녀의 왕자 발견하기.
The little mermaid floated joyfully back to the castle.
그 막내 인어공주는 기뻐서 성 뒤편을 떠돌았다.
“How was it?” her sisters asked together.
“어땠어?” 그녀의 자매들은 함께 물어봤다.
“Beautiful,” she sighed.
“아름다웠지,” 그녀는 한숨을 쉬었다.

그날 저녁, 그리고 한 주의 매일 밤이면 그녀는 동굴로 헤엄쳐 돌아갔고 갈망하여 빈 해변을 바라보았다.
At dawn, she returned to her statue under the sea.
새벽에 그녀는 바다 아래 그녀의 조각상으로 돌아왔다.
“Will I ever see my prince again?” she asked.
“제가 저의 왕자님을 다시 볼 수 있을 까요?” 그녀는 물었다.
The marble boy just smiled.
그 돌로 된 소녀는 그저 미소를 지었다.
“Why do you swim to the same place each night?” asked her sisters, one morning.
“너는 왜 밤마다 같은 장소에서 수영을 하니?” 어느 아침에 그녀의 언니가 물었다.
The little mermaid blushed and told them about her prince.
막내 인어공수는 얼굴을 붉혔고 그들에게 그녀의 왕자님에 대해 말해주었다.
