웃음과 눈물에 관한 이야기이다.
This story was told a long time ago.
이 이야기는 아주 오래 전에 전해졌다.
But it still has as much meaning todey as it did then.
하지만 오늘날에도 그때만큼이나 큰 의미가 있다.
It happened in a city called Venice in Italy.
이 이야기는 이탈리아의 베니스라는 도시에서 일어난 일이다.
This beautiful city rests liek a crown jewel on the Adriatic Sea.
이 아름다운 도시는 아드리아 해상에 왕관의 보석처럼 박혀 있다.
There lived a moneylender named Shylock in Venice.
베니스에 샤일록이라는 대금업자그 살고 있었다.
He earned a lot by lending mony to merchants.
그는 상인들에게 돈을 빌려주는 일로 큰 돈을 벌었다.

- Many people hated Shylock.
많은 사람들이 샤일록을 싫어했다.
Some people hated him because he forced merchants to repay him in terrible ways.
어떤 이들은 그가 무자비한 수를 써서 상인들에게 돈을 갚으라고 강요하기 때문에 그를 싫어했다.
Others hated him simply because he was Jewish.
또 어떤 이들은 그가 유대인이라는 이유만으로 그를 싫어했다.
Of all the merchants who lived in Venice,one hated Shylock more than the others.
베니스에 사는 상인들은 그 누구보다도 샤일록을 싫어했다.
His name was Antonio.
그의 이름은 안토니오
Shylock hated Antonio as well.
This was because Antonio was a very generous moneylender.
He lent money to people in trouble and often didn't charge them interest.
Shylock lost a lot of business because of Antonio's generosity
